Two Bearkats on the first team defense....none on the second team defense. I hope that is not really representative of the talent we have on that side of the ball. Some guys are going to have to step up.

It's very telling when your #1 and #2 RBs are picked pre-season #1 and #2 all-conference. It's also very telling when your QB and 3 of his WRs are 1st team pre-season picks as well. SHSU has no problems offensively, obviously. (kudos to #1 and #2 OL picks as well)

What's going on w/ the SHSU defense? Retooling? PJ Hall being 1st team all-conf is a given.

New defensive coordinator. A lot of youngsters in the secondary. Lost a lot of D-line talent to graduation. The offense will get us to the playoffs, but defensive improvement will be necessary to have a chance to finish.

Tremon Smith out of Anniston was originally committed to us at one point. I hated that we loss him in the recruiting battle.

Smith is a beast on the field. We thought he'd come in a do some backup QB with his DB skills. He has a VERY HIGH motor. Deserves every accolade he gets for sure. But as you can see we don't have just ONE star..we're copying the Bison on their formula it looks like...xlolx Just gotta get that pass defense to step up...

Again, don't expect much from the Cowboys this season when everybody else has more players that are better than ours.

We actually recruited him as a QB, helluva player though. He was an All-State kid over there in Alabama.

The Bearkats will continue to utilize the same defensive alignment — a four-man front — but Keeler and Carlin want to simplify the concepts within their scheme to take advantage of the speed and athleticism of their players.The two coaches have been examining the defenses of the Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons to try and incorporate some of their defensive philosophies during spring practice, like playing with a single high safety more often.
Carlin wants to take a more aggressive approach to stopping the run after James Madison overpowered the Bearkats on the ground. The Dukes ran for 356 yards on 5.6 yards per carry and scored six rushing touchdowns in a 65-7 victory over Sam Houston in the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs last December.

“In studying different NFL teams like the Seahawks and the Falcons, we really want to simplify things because we think we have good players. We just want to let them run and play fast,” Carlin said. “(The Falcons and Seahawks) put a big emphasis on swarming to the ball and not making it too confusing. Defense is reactionary … particularly with the tempo you see and the offenses we see on a weekly basis. If you make it simple, your players are going to play fast.”
With players like defensive end P.J. Hall, a Buck Buchanan Award finalist last season, All-Southland Conference linebacker Justin Johnson and safeties Adrian Contreras and Alfonzo McMillian returning, Carlin believes the Bearkats should improve on the defensive side of the ball in 2017.
