Not new uniforms unfortunately, but pretty cool concept uniforms created by a Richmond intern a couple of years ago.

Thank goodness FURMAN has new uniforms. A return back to a cleaner look, change the purple back to the correct Pantone purple which is a dark purple. And Coach Hendrix made a point to amplify the meaning of being a PALADIN. Now its on the chest of the new uniforms.
One last thing… a touch of eye candy: facemask is purple chrome.

Good looking helmet.

I have long thought Samford had one of the worst helmets in FCS football. They went from a busy bulldog/wordmark look to a garish interlocking SU. This design has some pizzazz to it. Samford is not really beholden to a historic look like many teams in the conference, and when you want to brand yourself as a high flying, high scoring team, then embracing that by fancying up your duds is a good idea.

Same helmets, numbers in the same place, team name in the same place, same shoulder lines, the only difference is you guys don't have gold as a color so you used white instead.

The purple is vastly different. We don't incorporate any secondary colors like gold or black. We have not (to my knowledge) ever worn purple pants. JMU's uniform is essentially Western Carolina.

Let's put it this way, Furman has been playing football since 1889. They've been essentially wearing the same uniform for 50 years.

The 2017 version is slightly updated. The word mark on the chest is much larger than it has been in the past, but the "new" look essentially incorporates what Furman has worn uniform-wise for decades. The only derivation from that is an ill conceived "update" to the uniforms the last four or five years.

Furman has been wearing essentially the same jersey combination since before James Madison even had a program.

Furman has had a white helmet since 1978, Furman had a purple facemask from 1978-2010 then Fowler changed the facemask to white.

I like the JMU uni's -- I would say they are similar but they have very different end results.
Furman's has two clean shoulder stripes that are straight, the Dukes have a digitized stripe (I happen to think is cool).
What Hendrix has done is brought back the old Furman look with a modern twist - the one big addition is the word PALADINS.
I think the new Furman uni's have a nod to a military school. Not sure what it is but it's a super clean uniform.

Great question… Adidas has made huge strides recently in shoe technology and materials, rivaling Nike, the boost shoes are sweet.
I think it's resources and priorities. Adidas is Euro-Global focused IMO, American Football is just a half-hearted attempt by them.

Nike has the money, the talent and the desire to constantly evolve football uniforms and equipment. If you want to compete with Nike in football apparel - you better go all in on high-tech materials, understand how players what uniforms to fit and color durability.

This is a bad post
Reasons that's a bad post - reason by reason

Same helmets
Not even close. Are they both white with a purple facemask? Sure. Does JMU own all variations of white helmets with purple facemasks? **** no. Difference purple - color and finish. The stripe is also different, and not just because of a gold inlay. The purple stripes on JMU helmet are roughly half, if even, the thickness of the Furman helmet and double, at least, the width apart. Outside of color there is nothing similar about the helmets - and if JMU is going to lay claim to white helmets you've got a REAL long line to get in to claim that behind about 75 other schools that have used them longer.

numbers in the same place
What the **** does this even mean? All numbers have been in the same spot for...oh...about 100+ years. If you're talking top of the shoulder TV numbers vs side of the shoulder TV numbers then you're a moran. A quick, and I do mean quick, google shows that roughly 60% of college football teams use top of shoulder TV numbers - and more switching to it every uniform change. Why? Uniforms getting tights and smaller in the shoulders. Thus side of shoulder numbers don't work. A growing number are adding designs to the side to "fill" the uniform out when they move the numbers. Easiest way to do that? Well, ...that's brought up later

team name in the same place
Again, what does this mean? Have you ever seen any team name anywhere but across the chest above the numbers - which you are also claiming Furman stole by placing on the abdomen? 100% of teams that put a school name/abbreviation put it right where JMU and Furman do.

For reference, here's another Purple, white, and gold school...
http://onpressrow.com/test/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/UNIFB-Vereen1.jpeg

I guess it's possible UNI also stole that from JMU...along with number placement.... so lets go back to 2010 UNI

Wait...it's still there...and that damn shoulder number is on top. ****in a, cotton. We were stealing **** before JMU had it available to steal. ****. Maybe UNI stole some propietary JMU designs. Lets go back to about 2005. Before we do that, look at that other purple school using ****ing gold, putting stripes on their sleeves, numbers in the same place on the chest and shoulder and the ****ing name above the numbers. What ****ing cock suckers.

God dammit, Kurt Wartner. What the **** are you doing copying JMU 24 ****ing years ago? Son of a bitch!!

I think I figured it out. It's all Mark Farley's fault. He's been at UNI every year since 1983 as a player or coach (except for 97-00 when he was at Kansas). Maybe if we go back to his playing days, before he was a coach and could make decisions we'll see UNI stop copying JMU

There it is, proof it's all Mark Farley's fault. That is a photo from 1984. He is number 46 and look at that. No shoulder numbers. No school name on the front of the uniform and the numbers were up higher on the chest.

I've cracked the ****ing case. Mark Farley, as a player in 1984, saw James Madison's 2016 uniforms and has dedicated the last 33 years to ensuring everyone - especially other schools that use purple - to copy that template to about 95% accuracy. Not 100% as that would be too obvious, but god dammit DirtyDukes is too smart and caught on to that one and cracked the case.

Here is Furman and James Madison playing in the FCS playoffs back in 2004. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGbnlHsAQio

Tell me again whose uniforms are supposed to look like whose again?

Furman's "new" uniforms look pretty much exactly like Furman's uniforms for decades. If anything, James Madison's uniforms have started to resemble Furman's.

You ****ed up so bad with that post I was able to turn it into a Mark Farley, circa 1984, being jealous of 2016 James Madison uniforms and trying to turn everyone into them 33 years before they existed conspiracy theory with literally no effort.

You're right, that was a pretty solid looking uniform that Western had there. Best football we've ever played was in those (or pretty darn similar) uniforms.

Even Furman teams from 15 years ago and 30 years ago copied James Madison's look before the Dukes even decided to change it. We are such posers.

JMU is pretty cutting edge with that numbers and stripes on the shoulders thing and putting the team name on the front of the jersey.

I would say this regardless of my allegiance, but I've always liked Furman's uniforms. There's something compelling about a simple design, use of white, and a logo that belongs to you alone.

I get where folks can quibble with purple, but unlike most other teams that have purple as a primary color, Furman does not crap up their uniforms and thankfully has gotten rid of those garish black ones.

I'm also a Vikings fan - I want the Vikings to take a page for the Vikings, just not 2007-2015

The 90s Vikings is what I'd love to see. Turn the facemask white, put a panther logo on the sleeve, UNI across the chest and make it happen

Our current set is the best set we've ever had - that tells you something. I hate shoulder caps on football jerseys so we'll have to agree to disagree. This was your best uniform.http://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/wcfcourier.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/1/66/1665346c-0d1e-11df-985a-001cc4c03286/1665346c-0d1e-11df-985a-001cc4c03286.image.jpg

Speaking of Vikings what you really need to do is model a uni of off this sweet throwback.

http://prod.static.vikings.clubs.nfl.com/assets/images/imported/zip/2009/10-October/AB2_7075/AB2_7332--nfl_medium_540_360.jpg

Yes I know, the shoulder stripes aren't identical but I just wanted to show what something similar could look like on a contemporary template.

clenz
July 19th, 2017, 10:35 AM
I couldn't remember if the Vikings throwbacks had the three stripe look on the pants, but yes, that is exactly what I want UNI to go too. Just a much better photo of it.

I love the Warner era uniforms. Colors were perfect, I loved the panther head shooting from the back of the helmet, white facemask, everything about it. The road uniform can be white pants or get purple pants with yellow and white tristripe.

Farley hates white uniforms though, so that will never happen as long as he's here.

The best helmets we had were the 1980s

http://nationalchamps.net/Helmet_Project/Northern_Iowa_OLD5.gifhttp://nationalchamps.net/Helmet_Project/Northern_Iowa_OLD6.gif

I take that back, there is one helmet from the mid 70s that was worn that I like better.

http://nationalchamps.net/Helmet_Project/northern_iowa_1975_mgc.jpg

The NI logo in purple inside a old gold football.

That brings me to a "modern" version of that helmet worn in the late 90s

http://nationalchamps.net/Helmet_Project/Northern_Iowa_OLD2.gif

That's the logo I want UNI to go back to. I despise, with a fiery passion, out current logo. The block NI was/is awesome. I make sure to mention it to every UNI employee I speak too, and how awesome some throwbacks to that would be. However, the athletics departments marketing rules are pushing that it always be UNI. The brand is now UNI. It's why our football uniforms say UNI on the chest, and not Panthers anymore. It's why our basketball uniforms have gone from this

http://www4.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Deon+Mitchell+Northern+Iowa+v+Wichita+State+1lgzLl 9oZMml.jpg

to this

https://ssl.gannett-cdn.com/usatsimg/image/thumb/540-390nw/8951896.jpg

Volleyball, softball, track, soccer, etc. have all gone from Northern Iowa to UNI on them. I'm not a big fan of it, but Nike gave us a custom font with it and maybe finally picking a marketing/branding path and sticking too it will work in terms of not being called NIU.

I'm still pissed Speir, like Briggs, ditched the gold pants, although Speir's 2012 and 2013 teams wore gold pants and THEN he ditched them. Briggs teams never wore gold pants. Heresy. HA! GO CATS!!!

Matte is by far the best option, followed by Luster, but never go Glossy on Matte. I used to run a photo lab, both wet and dry, and it was as far as a specific fortune 100 company goes, the #1 photo center in the US. That was always something that irked me when developing photos seeing uniforms that had glossy finish with matte attire on matte or luster film paper.

I like the new JMU look, actually a very clean uniform with the nice touch of the mascot on the sleeve.

I do have to say, shame on Under Armour for letting another school wear the exact same uniform. Maybe it's a core UA uniform or something, its a head scratcher.

Nike does it too. It's just not common to see schools with the exact same color - give or take just a few small tweaks on the hue scale.

For reference

These companies have templates and the schools pick what template they want to use. Now, depending on your schools contract dictates how early you get access to the templates - year 1, 2, 3, or 4. It could be SDSU's UA contract had access to those a year or two before McNeese. Depending on the contract it could also dictate costs associated with the sets. To compound the color issue, schools will change the color pattern enough to make their unique from others using the template - like UNI's shoulder numbers compared to WVU

I know UNI football will/has wear/worn a FB uniform a year longer to get in on a year 1 template rather than buying all new uniforms from a template/fabric that isn't the most recent and locking into those for 2 or 3 years. They wore the last uniforms they had a year longer than "normal" to get their current set it's first year out, rather than picking. UNI's contract gets them access to pretty much everything year 1, thanks to our basketball program. Our basketball program gets literally everything free from Nike - new uniforms ever year, a ton of shoes, shirts, sweats, etc. As part of that our FB team gets a drastically reduced price on uniforms and accessories. I believe I'd heard before that NDSU and Montana get their FB things free, but don't know the details on the basketball items.

When picking their current uniform UNI put out a fan vote on which to pick. This one, or a variation of what Arizona used the last few years

Bottom is sdsu. They always seemed like bottoms to me. Rofl.

But seriously, McNeese was the top one. I pulled the RGBs right off of official logos from the school. Now, does SDSU deepen their blue on their uniforms? Possibly. I'm obviously not involved with that. It could also be that the materials of the uniforms alter the color of the uniform to deepen it. I know that happens at UNI. Different materials with the exact same color on it will look different

What this goes to show is that the reason it's so obvious is that the colors are 97% identical.

Look at EWUs uniforms with the wings on their shoulders. Any adidas school that uses a bird as a mascot uses those uniforms. I did a count a year or two ago. I think there was like 5 D1 schools using that template.

Add in all the D2 and lower schools, plus high schools using that wing shoulder design and your into the hundreds. There are like 15-20 HS in Iowa that use it.

They also have 8 different yellows.

4 reds
4 greys
10 greens
3 browns
5 purples

SDSU does list that darker blue, as well as a navy and the color I pulled.

I've never seen a school with as many colors as SDSU.

Maybe I'll pull the McNeese's listed color, rather than logo color, to do a comp.

So, after doing that thumper is correct with the darkness of the blue

https://image.prntscr.com/image/jBpXULLCST_LJZ_FedGOsw.png

However, in doing that the yellows become nearly identical.

Looking at photos of both schools football uniforms shows both schools wearing some lighter shaded blue uniforms and some darker shade uniforms over the last handful of years. That could all be due to lighting or a variety of factors.

It's interesting to look at McNeese's stadium and see the blue they use there though

What I'm confused with is the reds, purples and greens.

They have to be used in other parts of the university/department. But where? They wouldn't pay for the pantone registration for 48 specific colors if they didn't have a use for them.

You're only half right. As I said, the color I pulled is correct as it's right off of your logo. It also matches in of the registered Pantone colors.

Take it up with your athletic department not matching logos to their proper pantones they paid for

DITTO… I work in branding and I still love to look at the structure and colors of branding guides. Universities can be a bit like the Wild West and have a dizzy array of conflicting identities.

Here's Furman's it's gotten tighter over the years, thanks to a very solid communications department.

UNI fans have a running joke about 50 Shades of purple. Our purple depends on the day, shirt, fabric, manfucature, who was working the plant the day the shirt was made, etc... Walk into any place selling UNI shirts and from a distance it looks like just purple. Get closer and you'll see every single hook/rack is different. Hell, look at photos of UNI's uniforms, especially before we went matte helmet. We call our color Blurple.

Through the years
Current home and away use different shades of purple - the road matches pretty well, but damn the home is bad. Mostly he helmet is the issue, which were gotten before our Nike redesign I mention later in this post.

Previous set. Notice the helmet purple, the fact the logo on the helmet is a different purple, the purple on the jersey top being a third shade, and then the pants another on home and away
https://i2.wp.com/yourdailycowboysfootballfix.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/L.J.-Fort-4.jpghttp://image.cdnllnwnl.xosnetwork.com/pics32/400/OJ/OJPMHDOANNQHANK.20111223180724.jpg

Even more egregious was our uniforms from about 01-2010
http://onpressrow.com/test/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/EricSanders-UNIFB.jpg

It's gotten significantly better over the last 3-4 years. The whole issue started in the late 90s when we decided to keep our colors purple and old gold but we replaced old gold with yellow. They did a rebrand with a new logo in 2000, then again in 2001 and again in 2002. Hell, prior to our current logo - which I find to be atrocious - which came out in 02 UNI was very loose in what our actual logo was. I can find no record from the before about 1999 as to what our official logo history is. Football helmet history does no help in that either. The logo that sportslogos.net has for us between 1981-1999 is rarely found in UNI historical documents. Take a look at the UNI sports logo page http://www.sportslogos.net/logos/list_by_team/786/Northern_Iowa_Panthers/ We've changed purples 4 times since 1999. I'm pretty sure until our most recent logo change we didn't have a true set pantone/rgb we gave companies. We just told them "relatively dark purple". In 2015 Nike approached us about redoing our contract with them - thank you top 10 ranked basketball team - and they gave us a custom color scheme and font. T-shirts are still pretty spotty as to colors but uniforms are starting to improve. Part of the issue is that UNI's past leadership (specifically our last AD Troy Dannen) did not/would not allow for companies to use our trademark/actual colors either. Finding UNI gear outside of a very small set of stores was impossible. The lock down they put on it was insane. They went after a gas station in town that put "Welcome to Panther Town" on their eaves outside of their building, simply because it was purple, yellow and said Panther.

Prime example. My Tervis coffee mug.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170726/424312a7f47f9ab32d38f50c88a370a8.jpg

Maybe that's the only purple lid they have but I know other schools get the proper color. I'd bet it's they didnt license the color for the kid when this was made a couple years ago.

Our new AD gets it, our new Nike contract helps. We are seeing more and more UNI stuff pop up, and in new locations. Our new AD spent the last decade at Iowa State, was at Wisconsin before that, and a few SEC schools before that. Say what we want about ISU's FB team, the last decade has saw incredible growth from that university in terms of marketing, fan base, ticket sales, excitement, tailgating, everything. It's because their AD gets the importance of branding, getting the name out there, making things available, etc... Our AD helped with that. He did the same at Wisconsin before. It's a completely different department now than it was 2 years ago.

I'll work on doing a purple comp between UNI and WIU since we share a conference. I may throw SFA, JMU, WCU and Furman in there just to see how it all comps. They are all very similar, but there is some very slight shade differences.

Do you think that the lighting in the UNIDome has any impact on the shade of purple? Also, the UNIDome I feel could go through more transitions with lighting than some other places since some of the original Teflon still exists. I've been to three SDSU-UNI games there so it was always interesting to me.

SDSU has focused in harder the last 5 years on the kind of blue they want to go with but playing at night versus day really impacts the shade of blue:

Night:

The photo of Eric Sanders from 2005 was outside - National Championship game.
The road photos are all outside during the day and the shades are all still different
The home photos are all under the exact same lighting as each other as 99% of our home games kick at 4PM.

Yes, lighting plays a part of it, but I can pull photos from Eric Sanders in the Dome with the same result
http://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/wcfcourier.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/d/39/d39a5ecc-2fc4-5977-b6e2-151a0bfdba24/d39a5ecc-2fc4-5977-b6e2-151a0bfdba24.image.jpg

Night/Day will lighten/darken the colors, but it will do it universally top to bottom, not selected pieces. I can tell you, having seen them in person it's just as obvious.

The only things left to upgrade in the dome - playing portion of it - is the lighting, sound system and seat backs. Turf is all brand new, video boards are 3 years old this year, north endzone was completed redone in 2010.

Those are expensive projects to complete in the dome, though. To replace the lights will cost SIGNIFICANT money, though it should be done. The sound system is ****ed no matter what we do because of the fact it's a cement walled, metal roofed, metal seated, cement floored, etc... rounded dome. Literally the only thing to absorb sound in there is the turf and human bodies during a game. The AD has spent millions over the last 15-20 years on engineers, speakers, more engineers, mixers, boards, etc... to try to fix it. It just doesn't work. The echo is so bad that if you get it just right in one spot that 4 feet from that spot it's a disaster.

The seats work just fine, but they are ugly AF. I remember hearing a quote was done on having them painted and it was like 300K to have the backs removed, stripped, painted and reinstalled. I think we are getting closer to have that done, but 300K simply to repaint "perfectly good" seats wasn't an option at that time. Completely replacing them is mostly not an option either. Dome was built between 74 and 76. ADA rules have changed. if we do a complete replace I believe we have to drop capacity to make sure we meet ADA requirements for seat size. The seats are not wide. When the dome is full it's literally a sardine can.

All of those ****ty things is what makes the dome so tough to play. The lighting takes getting used too - it's good, just different. The sound echos and when full the place is literally impossible to talk to someone next to you. It's hot because it's a sealed concrete building with 17,000 people worth of body heat being trapped.

But yeah...our purples need to be straightened out. lol

Personally, I love watching games at the UNI dome. I find the structure to be much more interesting than the Fargodome or the DakotaDome. I also like the UNI jersey's a bit better before they got a funkified with the stripes. (I feel the someway about SDSU's too)

The dome, as much as people want to hate it, is a fantastic place to watch a game. Other than the far corner sections on the south side of the stadium there is not a single bad seat in the place. The far sections on the north side have easy access to the 100x30' hd video board for plays on the other side of the field. The bleachers are so close to the field that the benches are actually under the stands.

Yes, the jokes of the sewage treatment domes and soviet era designs aren't completely unfounded. It does have that look. The teflon roof has been gone for a few decades now though. It might look like it as the metal roof was completely replaced by a more weather resistant PVC layer about 2010 after a massive hail storm just wrecked campsu - was actually working in the dome at the time the storm came through. It looked like it "snowed" about 5 inches on campus that May day and it was all golf ball sized hail....anyway.

Yeah the "modernization" that many logos/uniforms have gone through between 2000 and today is disgusting to me. UNI's logo is the epitome of everything wrong with logos between about 1996 and 2008ish.

I love traditional style uniforms. Not because I'm a purist - I love one off uniforms and special occasion uniforms. It's because traditional uniforms are timeless. They can link the past to the present and to the future. The create the identity of the program, even as the players in them change. That and they look better 98% of the time. UNI's current uniforms would be damn near perfect is the black (purple on the roads) on the side panels was limited to the shoulder and not the chest and if the stupid grey side panel on the pant where the stripe is was the same color as the pants and the stripe was the only thing there.

If SDSU were to put one more yellow stripe right on top of the white stripe on the blue uniforms, to create a tristripe, and then shift that down on the shoulder it would be my one of my favorite uniforms in the FCS, to be honest.

It isn't quite that bad. The backs of the seats at least make it so you know where your seat is. The seats are definitely wider than at Memorial Stadium here in Lincoln. I never realized how good I had it in other stadiums until coming here. But my hope is they never get rid of seat backs in the Dome. It is really quite a luxury.

I saw this on the ETSU official web site:

New Gold Jerseys – The Buccaneers have added a new gold jersey to its uniform options this year, and the Bucs will be wearing this new look on opening night against Limestone..
Gold Out – With the Bucs wearing their new gold jerseys, fans attending the game are also being asked to wear gold for this opening game.

Like App State, the folks in Johnson City don't know the difference between "gold" and yellow. Here's their new jersey, nice jersey, but it's YELLOW

I like it. One of my best away game memories happened there (seeing Scifres' 50+ yard FG to win back in the day).
Since we only have 4 home games this year, I'm going to try to get up to our game at UNI and the one over at ISUr. UNI is only slightly over 3 hours away from us, and my wife's grandmother and an aunt and uncle live just outside of Cedar Falls, so I can drop her off there for a few hours.

EDIT - also regarding our purple vs UNI's purple, last year, at least (outdoor, sunlight) it actually looks like ours might be a tiny bit darker than UNI's away uniform's purple: https://photocart.wiu.edu/index.php?do=photocart&viewGallery=11790#image=223330

Notice he missed the 2014 season after a great freshman year at TAMU? Well it's because he was was arrested for robbing a person at gun point during a drug deal he was involved in. That year was taken off to try to straighten that out.

McNeese let him play in 2015 and 2016. Funny thing is, he was sentenced in between the 15 and 16 seasons. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Not jail - prison.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) A Texas A&M player kicked off the team following his 2014 arrest in a drug-related case must serve 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery.
Ex-defensive lineman Isaiah Golden of Carthage was sentenced Wednesday in College Station as part of a plea deal on three robbery counts. A judge could reconsider the penalty for the 21-year-old Golden, possibly converting the prison term to probation, after the former Aggie serves four months behind bars.
Prosecutors are also requiring Golden to testify against another ex-A&M player, linebacker Darian Claiborne, who was also arrested in 2014 and dismissed from the team. Court documents indicate Golden and Claiborne were accused of robbing three men at gunpoint during an alleged drug deal.
Golden played for McNeese State last year.

He was released from prison on August 17th 2016 - so he still hasn't been out of prison for a full year. He was released because of something in a plea agreement. He was back on the practice field August 18th.

In fact, their AD was pleading for the sentence to be reduced from the day it was handed down

"He (Isaiah) has shown us he is committed to putting in the work to prove himself worthy of a second chance," the McNeese Athletic Department said in a prepared statement. "He accepts responsibility for his actions and poor judgment. We are hopeful that his sentence will be reduced and that he can continue to move forward."

It's honestly astonishing how many stories involving McNeese pop up when you google McNeese State player prison

The common denominatory in all of them, from what I can see is Lance Guidry

Lol nothing like a team photo with everybody doing the gangsta side pop pose....lol

That was a photo taken after all of the official photos were taken. They were posing for a friend who was taking a photo with a cell phone. I just took a photo at the same time. I used it because it was one of the only photo that you can see the stripes down the pants. All of the official photos were taken straight on and you can see the stripes.

I would guess those guys couldn't handle the recoil that a Cowboys pistol would give out.

What kind of shoulder pads is 35 wearing? Wow.

After seeing #35 I immediately thought of Wesley Snipes from Demolition Man. Maybe he got Snipes old shoulder pads:D

Never heard of that movie, but that's pretty spot on. #44's pads look unusually wide as well.

Here's what I was thinking of

I'd take Simmy as the QB on my team ANY day. Great guy and a tough sum'bitch.
Also that's very possibly the best offensive live in Bison history, which is saying a lot.

I believe thats Mike Favor, member of the College Football Hall of Fame, launching off the line. Chris Simdorn should be in there also.
