Illinois is a sleeping giant waiting for someone who can keep the 5 star recruits in state. Underwood might be that guy.

Man, I'm excited for next year. Coach Harper took us from zero to the dance in one year and he's still building the team. If we can keep him, and I hope we do, we should be in for some fun in the next couple years.

They suck at hoops. We took them to OT two years ago when we were a last place OVC team.

Considering the recruiting class they signed I'm surprised they are not higher.

Also another year, and more maturity.

Alabama was 20-15 (6 of those 15 losses were by 5 or less points) last season and made it to the SEC Finals giving Kentucky all they could handle 74-79.

They also return all their starters.

F: Donta Hall 6-9; 223 (Jr.)
F: Riley Norris 6-7; 205 (Sr.)
F: Braxton Key 6-8; 225 (So.) SEC All-Freshman Team
G: Dazon Ingram 6-5; 205 (So.) Team POY
G: Avery Johnson Jr. 5-11; 186 (Jr.)

Oh and Coach Johnson can recruit

Additions to the team
Freshman G: John Petty 6-5; 180 ***** #21 Prospect in the country (ESPN) 2X Mr. Basketball & Gatorade POY (Alabama)
Freshman G: Collin Sexton 6-3; 175 ***** #2 PG; #7 Player Nationally (247Sports) McDonald All-American; Slam dunk Champ
Freshman F: Alex Reese 6-9; 225 **** #58 Prospect in the country; #8 PF (Scout)
Freshman F: Herb Jones 6-7; 205 **** #71 Prospect in the country; #2 State (AL.) (Rivals); #8 SF (Scout)
Freshman C: Galin Smith 6-9; 220 **** #1 C in the state (MS.) #2 overall prospect State (MS); #21 C in the nation (over 5 BLK a game)
Ohio State transfer C: Daniel Giddens 6-11; 236 (So.) **** Sat out last season, so now can play.
Texas transfer F: Tevin Mack 6-7; 220 (Jr.) **** Will have to sit out season.

We don't like the term "Jacks" in Fargo. Please refer to yourself as lumberjacks, lumber, 2x4's or similar, just not that other term.

You guys should try and get a home game with NAU as well as SFA. Then you can have three Jacks teams coming in to Fargo that year.

This week, Harvard has finally announced its 2017-2018 schedule. We open with 2 consecutive home games with MIT and UMass Amherst, at the newly renovated Lavietes Pavilion. Then it's on the road all the way to the mandatory finals break... with a stop at the Wooden Legacy tournament in Fullerton (the tournament is no longer in Anaheim.)

Wow, we have the Big Blue at Rupp on our schedule... plus the Goofs in Minneapolis. The Old Main of Wofford is our last OOC game on the road.

Thank goodness, no Canadian or NAIA schools for this year... this is a more challenging SOS for the Crimson.

Bucknell has announced its 13-game OOC schedule. It is by far the toughest in its history. With over 80% of schedules already released, the Bison seem to have the 2nd-strongest non-con outside the P6, behind Monmouth. Bucknell returns all five starters and the nine top scorers from a team that went 26-9, losing an NCAA second round game to West Virginia, 86-80.

Hmm... too many lower division opponents on SFA's schedule; I don't really buy this type of schedules some D-I basketball programs put up, especially when done perenially. Harvard has had attempted to put Canadian schools on the schedule a few years ago, hopefully Amaker has learned his lesson by now... we have a few Dance contenders on our schedule right there for this season (some of our opponents, however, have had struggles with coaches, both on and off court, in the past few seasons.) But opening the regular season with MIT... it's another story. I don't think it would go away instantly if Amaker gets poached or steps down.

The SFA basketball program doesn't like it either but we can't get anyone to come to Nac, so its not by design. Underwood and Kaspar before that had the same problem.

The Wofford Terriers will be opening a brand new arena this season, the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, as they look to some great returning talent as well as some promising newcomers to lead the team back to the top of the SoCon standings and back into the NCAA Tournament. Nonconference schedule highlights include home games against South Carolina, Georgia Tech, and Harvard and trips to Chapel Hill and Cal Berkeley.

UNI found out that when your 3 pointers aren't falling against a D3 you should probably stop ****ing shooting them. UNI was 3-22 in the first half and got to like 3-26 at one point. Really struggled to do anything against the D3 because they just wanted to jack 3s all night. In the first half there was 27 shot attempts, 22 were 3s

Makes sense considering UNI starts a 1st team all conference center that is 6'10, an all conference 4 man that is 6'8, a true freshamn wing guard that is 6'5 and has been ****ing dominant vs North Carolina and Alcorn State and a 2 guard that is 6'7....and the D3 we were playing had zero players over 6'6

About half way through the second half someone finally figured something out. Out 6'10 center had 20 points in the final 10 minutes, didn't miss a FG, and UNI outscored the D3 35-7 in that span.

It's a good D3. Sweet 16 last year and top 20 ranked this year, but damn that was embarassing to watch. Yes, we were without a starter and our 2 main center back ups were out with injuries but holy **** that was bad.

This is a D3 that the last 3 times we've played we've beaten by an average of 101-53. To only get a 30 point win last night isn't good.

Recover and move on I guess.

It isn't a team I follow, but I attended Mississippi State's easy 79-48 win over Florida A&M on Saturday afternoon. Both teams, especially the Bulldogs, played sloppy in a mostly sluggish first half plagued by turnovers, but MSU started getting their act together in the last minute of so of the half to take an 11 point lead into the break. Mississippi State continued the good play early in the second half and the Rattlers had no answer, turning the game into a rout for the home team.

Incidentally, primarily for SFA 93, I will also be attending Mississippi State's game on Wednesday (night before Thanksgiving) against Stephen F. Austin, which appears to be an intriguing matchup and a much tougher test for the Bulldogs. (Between Saturday's game against FAMU and Wednesday's game vs SFA, Mississippi State will also host Wisconsin-Green Bay on Monday; I will not attend that game however.)

SFA has yet to be tested, as we have played only one DI team in the 4 victories thus far.

Miss St. should gage the Jacks in where they really stand when playing on the road against a SEC opponent, as we play Missouri and LSU later in the season on the road as well.

We play a much faster pace offense than last season as our athletes demand it with their speed.

Perimeter shooting has been killing us and turnovers as we average over 20 TOs a game, but that could be due to the speed in which we run the floor.

Interesting game for Lehigh tonight as they take their 3-1 record to USC---#10 Southern Cal. Lehigh lost their only real 'big man' Tim Kempton to graduation. The tallest 'regular' is 6'9", and it drops off from there. Mountain Hawks can shoot very well, so on a 'hot' night from 3-point land they get be dangerous, but rebounding is lacking due to size deficiency, so this will be interesting to see if we can be competitive with an elite program.

UNI takes down SMU in the first game of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

They will now take on NC State who beat #2 Arizona in their first game, in the semifinals.

Awaiting the winner/loser of that game is #5 Villanova or Tennessee - who took down #18 Purdue.

This is a hell of a tournament and should be a real nice RPI boost for UNI. If we can get out of it at 2-1 (3-0 would be spectacular) it would be massive.

It’s all house money tomorrow. The RPI boost we are getting from this is nuts. I though we’d get SMU NC State and WKU. To get Nova and play for a title?

UNI is currently 5-1.

It’s hard for most to schedule but it’s getting harder and harder for UNI to get quality games. UNI has an 85% home win percent and teams don’t want to play in Cedar Falls. UNI is at a level where we don’t white ourselves out so H/H are tough. We have a rep to get good MTEs.

UNI is at 5-2 and the two losses are UNC and Nova - the last two title winners.

3 top 100 wins with wins over SMU, NC State and UNLV.

Face a real tough test in UT-Arlington this coming week, another top 100 team.

UNI rounds out the meaty portion of the OOC schedule with UT-A, Xavier (top 15), Iowa State. If UNI can win 2 of those games we will be in real good position for an at-large come March. All 3 are in the state of Iowa with 2 at home and the Iowa State game being a neutral site game in Des Moines with Iowa State.

Winning 2 of 3 of those plus out other OOC games sends us into MVC play at 9-3 with an RPI of around 25 and a OOC SOS of 20

Yeah. I'm not betting on that one.

Watching UTA tonight, I like our chances. They seem like a favorable match up for our bigs.
Iowa State is a bit of an enigma right now but I think we are better than them.

The MVC is going to be a top 10 rated RPI conference this year. No one would have predicted that with WSU leaving. It's amazing how much better the bottom of the conference is this year. That's been my gripe for years. It's not the top of the conference has been worse than it was from 05-09 when we were getting top 25 ranked teams, and 4 bids. It's that the bottom 4 of the league fell off dramatically. The MVC used to have 9 teams in the top 200 of the RPI. The last 5-6 years we have had 4 teams 250 or worse. That is just a massive drag. It brings everyones RPI down, everyones SOS down, and hurts the top in terms of quality metrics.

If UNI can get to 9-3 OOC with wins over UTA, UNLV, NC State, SMU and Iowa State (or Xavier) and finish conference play at 13-5 or better, which is a real possibility, that is going to be a hard team to keep out of at-large spots. RPI will be in the 20s. Overall SOS in the 40s. Quality wins.

This could all go south but man I'm excited. We haven't even been close to full strength this year yet. The projected starter at the 2 spot hasn't played this year. One of our bench centers (a 7') has been out all season so far. We had our main bench guard go down with an ankle sprain - still playing but you could see it impact him. At one point I think we had 7 scholarship players available and were playing 3 walk ons.

Temple snuck past Wisconsin 59-55 in Philly. Amazingly, this was our first home game of the year. It was a nice bounce back after suffering a tough loss to George Washington over the weekend.

We're now 5-2 with Big 5 rival St. Joe's heading to North Broad Street on Saturday....

It should be noted that the St. Joe's game is the first of three straight home games against Philadelphia City Six rivals for Temple, with the other two coming against Villanova and Drexel.

52 in a row for Syracuse, they beat Colgate 72-58 in the Dome. Credible performance for the Raiders, as they hit 14 threes and never let the Orange get too far away. Still, a loss is a loss, and that's 4 straight on a 4 game road trip.

Temple fans and alums are finally speaking up regarding Fran Dunphy. Several people have started to write emails to our AD. Dunphy has basically lost the entire Temple fan base. This whole thing is going to turn out ugly if he doesn't win something of consequence this season or resign/get fired when it's over.

The media narrative regarding his coaching greatness is completely false. He was an excellent coach at the Ivy League level but has proven over and over he can't produce Top 25 teams at Temple. Last night we were called out by the Dan Dakich and his play by play guy for failing to compete against Villanova and quitting at times. That's unacceptable...

I think it’s a bit unfortunate that Mike Young and the basketball program at Wofford has often been in the shadow of the football program. Some people do not know Wofford has made four NCAA Tournament appearances under Young. He also took a nothing program and made it into something. This UNC win can help change all that IF the Terreirs can keep the momentum into SoCon play and build on it.

Feinstein's Last Amateurs does mention that he was recruited by many big programs, and listed Duke specifically. I'd have to check if Syracuse specifically was there too, but I would expect so. Foyle's guardians were both Colgate faculty, which is how he wound up at Hamilton for high school, and definitely played a big role in him actually going to Colgate. Found it, and Syracuse was on the list. Remembered the gist of the quote incorrectly, but still enjoyable:
Feinstein, The Last Amateurs, 79-80

He chose Colgate over Duke and nearby Syracuse and received national attention for saying he had chosen Colgate because academics were more important to him than basketball. That comment didn't make Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski terribly happy, especially given his school's academic reputation and graduation rate. "He chose Colgate because he guardians teach there," Krzyzewski said, "which I have no problem with. What I have a problem with is the notion that this was some kind of books-over-basketball decision. Colgate's a good school, but last time I looked it wasn't Harvard. And I think our library is still open down here."

The next paragraph has quotes from Foyle talking about how it was basketball-first at Duke, which helped drive his decision.

Yes! Use the powers of the #bookit on this game and complete the season sweep of the Siouxage.

LOL, as soon as I trash them, they go out an make me look stupid. This same thing happened before the USD game, maybe my #bookit karma transferred over to basketball. That being said, that Denver loss was a bad home loss as Denver is weak at best.

We got UND at home next, I have the F'n Hawks in a rout at the SHAC, #bookit

Hmmmmm... I'm going to have to do something about that...

SFA (15-3; 4-1) @ ACU (12-7; 4-2)

ACU 7-2 at home this season and beat the Lumberjacks last season 69-60 in Abilene. The Wildcats are 5 points from being a perfect 6-0 in conference play.

Should be a good one.

Still behind the leaders. Raiders led by 9 late in the 1st half, but the Bison were too much in the 2nd half. Bucknell wins on national TV, 63-51

Some nice shots of the campus though

Yep, UND has a couple of pretty nice players. Miller is the only guy that ever shows up for the Bison. They played that game with a complete lack of emotion or drive, it is pretty sad really. It is a good thing NDSU has football because we suck at the other "major" college sports right now.

Big road win in Bethlehem. Led by as much as 28, but had to hold on for the 76-72 win. Now 3-1 away from home in PL play

Next game Saturday at home against Loyola

Temple snuck past Tulane 59-58 last night. We trailed the whole game but pulled it out at the end. We still stink so the joy of victory is the definition of relative....

Never thought I'd the the Bears in the top 6. Although this year they have lost 6 games by around 6 points...which is MUCH better than years past.
