JSU is the only top 20 team who lost their QB according to this article. Will a converted Safety be their guy? xcoffeex Maybe some clarification from JSU folks on here about this.

I believe we are witnessing as high point in overall FCS quarterback play. There were always a few FCS QBs that stood out, but it seems like there is more excellence across the board these days.

Actually, former linebacker Bryant Horn is poised to start for us at QB.

It says that in the article.

Im thrilled about our situation. We lost our starter in week 2, who took us to OT in Fargo. The 2nd string guy stepped in and took us to a conference title and playoffs where we lost by 1 to a great Wofford team.

Will be a hell of a QB competition at CSU this fall.

2nd place isn't bad for an FCS guy when competing against the best in the country. Shane Buechele from Texas won 1st.

#1 in FCS though.

Looks like these FCS guys were there.

Nicholls' Chase Fourcade
Samford's Devlin Hodges
North Dakota's Keyton Studsrud
Sam Houston State's Jeremiah Briscoe

The rest were FBS guys.

Do you know what the criteria for the "second place" ranking was?

Have no idea on the details of the competition.

As long as it's not cold and there aren't any JMU defenders in the way, I'm sure Briscoe looked great.

Hell, it wasn't even cold when he sucked at our place.

Lehigh loses it's three year starter Shafnisky; though, the article does note our expected #1 QB had significant playing time due to Shaf's injuries and illnesses. Mayes does not have the "running threat" that Shafnisky had, but he has a pure, sweet passing motion and is mobile enough and has a much stronger and, I think, more accurate arm. The main thing is how he handles the "mantel" of leadership as "the man".

Uh Yeah, I usually read articles before I post them. Your own 2015 roster listed Horn as a Safety. What I'm actually curious about is the progress of Kendrick Doss. As a former 3*** Ole Miss signee, and one of the top rated dual threat QBs in the nation, I sorta expected him to be the man.(?)

was it a law that he had to wear gloves? any reason you can think of that he might have wanted to wear them?

A very underrated QB. If he shows just a little better touch on his passes, Dominique Allen will be a nightmare(actually already is) for defensive coordinators. Totaled over 100 yards against Samford last year.

Horn may have played safety in 2015, not sure. He was never in a starting role on defense. In high school he did a bit of it all, similar to Eli. He was backup QB for us last year and played special teams since LeMay graduated.

Most of us JSU folks think Doss will defintely be pushing Horn for the starting role and that competition is a good thing. Personally, from what I saw in the spring game I liked Doss. He's faster and he's got a cannon. Horn in his time last year did a good job. I wouldn't be upset with either of them starting. Both have good arms, both have wheels, Horn may have a better football IQ but I'm not a coach and I haven't seen enough play from either of them to conclude that.

Given Eli's shoulder leading to mediocre passing last year I think if the receiving corps can finally step it up with the addition of the new WR coach we should see a better passing attack this year overall.

Bunch of 'ifs' but the offense has lots of potential to be better than last year. Last year kind of blew offensively.
