The Visitors (East) Side of General Johnson Hagood Stadium is being demolished. In sad news the William Tecumseh Sherman Memorial Peewall is no more. Delaware now leads the country in peewalls.

It's a sad day. I may need to go pay my respects tomorrow. I drove right by today and stayed away due to graduation crowds.

What's the demolition for? Is this a removal or part of a overhaul?

I would be very surprised if they do construction more than once. Permitting is a REAL BITCH in an old city like Charleston. I have no evidence or knowledge but I would think you build ONCE to 18, 500 and avoid the expense of doing it twice.

Well I thought that the design was planned for easy expansion. Not heard much about it lately though. I am sure we will hear more in the near future. Not sure how the permits enter into that. I would be happy with 18K with ability to expand, especially if the crowds keep increasing. Nice problem to have, hopefully.

Permitting is a bugger. Like what happen to PT barracks, where I think some butthead filed a lawsuit due to the age of the barracks, it held up demolition and replacement of it for a little while I believe. I never did get the whole story on that. They only had a few years left on the General so good thing they are doing it now instead of kicking the can down the road. I think 75 years is the magic number.

They could one day add a second level to visitor side like App St did.

Nice to see the demolition has begun. Progress. Samford's been talking about expansion since G. Seignious was president of the Citadel.
