I prefer Moose Drool but this is some solid stuff. Not a big fan of IPAs but this is a solid beer.

Spotted Cow is a thing of legends around eastern Iowa. I've never tried it, but I've yet to come across someone that didn't like it.

Then again 98% of Iowan's drink exclusively Busch Light..so...

I'm REALLY not a beer guy (like...had never tried a beer that I actually liked), but we were in Milwaukee at a conference with other higher-ed web people and a guy from UW-Madison kept insisting I give it a shot. I kept refusing, but he finally said he'd pay for it if I'd give it an honest chance. I said....ok, I'll give it a try (when in Wisconsin, and all that)...and ended up drinking the whole thing and a couple more.
There are things I don't like about Wisconsin, but sitting in a sports bar, drinking spotted cow and eating fried cheese curds...that was not one of them ;)

I'm not exactly an expert anymore, but the boys out east win by default.

New Glarus only distributes in Wisconsin so it's got this cult following. They make better beers than Spotted Cow

A few bars on this side of the divide have this on tap now. Love it. Also one of the best beer names around.

Spotted Cow is a fine brew, and Wisconsin produces some fine quality....but ease over to Michigan for the Bell's stuff. As a guy that has completed research in this field, Bell's is the BEST All-Around brewery in America. There are a couple of One-offs that challenge, but taking into account their entire portfolio....BELLS!!!!!

And while we are on the subject of beer, I use to say, "When I was at Chattanooga we didn't win many football games, but there wasn't a team in the country that could drink more beer than us.....come to think of it, that might have some impact on why we didn't win too many games."

Monday- $5 pitchers at Yesterday's
Tuesday- Dollar long necks at David's
Wednesday - Bladder Busters at Stone Lion ($0.05 draft until the first person took a leak)
Thursday- $5 pitchers at the Brass Register
Friday - Bed Check!!!!
Saturday - Drowned our sorrows with Rob's Karioke and cheap pitchers at David's
Sunday - $7 buckets at Mayo's Clinic during the race.

Bell's is solid but let's be honest, Disgruntled in Perham Minnesota is the best micro-brew followed by Enki in Victoria Minnesota. Now if we are talking mid-sized, Boulevard in Kansas City takes the cake.

I understand the spotted cow connection, the dairy, the cheese, etc...... just not the cow positioned to the state in a way that is weird in the logo. Just looks hilarious, congers up many ways to make fun of the logo. When you think of great beer, you don't think of cows. Weird

There is no best micro-brewery in the US. There are a number of very good ones but which one is best is based on your preferences. Bells is a great brewery (I was a huge fan when they started) but I haven't seen the same cutting edge brewing from them that I used to. A lot of breweries seem to take some chances after opening but then settle into a routine after building a loyal customer base. IMO New Glarus meets that criteria. I'm not a fan of Spotted Cow but it's a good beer for those that don't like bold, adventurous beers. I actually toured the New Glarus brewery soon after it opened and spent some time talking to Dan and Deb Carey.

I arrived in Seattle in 85, there was a small brewery that was pumping out some really good beer in Ballard, name was Redhook, it was 2 bucks a pint and went down really good

Redhook brewery is now actually in Woodinville, and they have one in New Hampshire. I did the brewery tour, along with the wineries a few years ago when I was visiting my sister that lives in Woodinville. I got a little toasty....However, Red Hook is now owned or partially owned by Buttwiper (or inbev or whatever the hell they are called now) as I was told on the tour.

well it might be now, but the 85 in my post was the year 1985..... and it was most definitely in Ballard (Seattle) and might be coming back home, regardless it's a mighty fine beer

By now you may have heard rumors about Redhook (http://www.redhook.com/) returning to Ballard or Fremont. Well apparently it’s true. Redhook Brewery recently announced that it is exploring opportunities for returning to either Ballard or Fremont where it would open a new brewpub. Right now I don’t know much more than that, but I’m working on it.
Quick history for all you young ‘uns. Abbreviated and abridged:
Redhook started brewing in a converted auto repair shop in Ballard in 1981 or 1982. There is some debate, but the way I always knew the story, the company was founded in ’81 but sold its first keg in ’82.

Yeah it started in Ballard and outgrew its location, moved to another place, outgrew it, then moved to Woodinville next to the wineries. Then I think Buttwiper bought in some % of ownership and they expanded to New Hampshire. I liked the tour and all the tastings they had, but since it was after I had a number of tastings at the wineries I was a little plowed. I don't really like the foo-foo beers, however, I like the old school like Hamms, Old Mil, Lone Star, Grain Belt, etc.

Um....

Casey's is like the 5th largest Pizza restaurant in the nation. It's hardly "convenience store" pizza.

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/money/2016/02/12/caseys-fifth-largest-pizza-chain-us/80293534/

The company is the fifth largest pizza chain in the U.S. It sells more than 19 million whole freshly made pizzas a year along with 62 million individual slices. It’s been a growing part of the company since it was first introduced.

“When we look at competition, it’s not just the convenience store competition, but because we are so prevalent in the food service industry, we compete against quick service restaurants and other pizza chains as well,” said William Walljasper, Casey’s senior vice president and chief financial officer.

I've had pizza in every time zone, a few different countries, from everything from the cheapest chain to places that foodies consider "pizza heaven". It certainly isn't the best pizza out there, but it's significantly closer to the upper 25% of pizza places than it is the bottom 25%.

In terms of massive chains - Pizza Hut, Dominos, Papa Johns, etc... it's significantly better. It's better than many of the small, local owned, hole in the wall, etc... style pizza places that people will swear is better than anything chain related.

I'd love to run a blind taste test on it vs something people consider super high end pizza. I think we'd be shocked at the results. For research methods in college I was part of a group that did that kind of study regarding beer and wine and price. A large number of people instantly dismissed the "cheap stuff", yet almost all of them picked the cheap stuff as tasting better when it was blind.

Never said it wasn't good stuff, just meant that Casey's is primarily known as a convenience store. They sell pizza.
Therefore, it's "convenience store pizza". It could be the #1 selling brand in the world, rated the #1 best tasting pizza, and they could have some of the world's best pizza chefs at each location...it's still pizza sold at a convenience store.

I'm pretty sure most of them are individually owned. I guess ours just wasn't able to keep things going. When I was a kid, it was located on one corner of our downtown square...great little hole-in-the-wall kinda place...kinda dark, red and black vinyl booth seats, record-playing jukebox in the back...it was beautiful. Eventually they moved to another location and idk...maybe it was just too "nice"? Eventually the couple that owned it sold it and retired, but it went out of business a couple years later. That same couple eventually bought it back and tried to start it back up...kept going for a couple more years, but just couldn't keep it going. I think it closed maybe 5 years ago.

My lady is from Pittsburgh and whenever we go back I get as much in as I can....

I'm going to guess it's about production capacity. My understanding is years ago they bought the old Stroh's Brewery in Tampa which allowed them to increase their production in order to sell in the southern states. A couple of years ago they just started selling in CT and MA. Up to that time, the inability to produce enough beer to meet the demand was the reason given. I don't think they sell in VT, NH or ME. Its hard to compete with Moxie.

I'll have to pay more attention on upcoming trips to Northern New England.

If you truly think that's the pinnacle of beer in this country, I feel sorry for ya. Oh well, can't save every soul.

Lots of excellent craft beers in VT and ME. Not as many in NH, but they're starting to catch up.

Based on my tailgating with Tribe4SF, he's not really a beer drinker. If he's drinking Yuengling now, that is a step forward! :D If you want a recommendation for a good Pinot Noir, Tribe4SF is your guy!!! xnodx

I grew up in Eastern PA so this stuff was ALWAYS around. Some people love it and think it's the second coming of holy water. Personally, I think it tastes terrible but I'm really picky when it comes to beer (Porters and Stouts almost exlusively).

Montana has some killer beers. BoZone not being one of them....

There was a Canadian beer people drank out there in bunches and I forget the name. Came in a blue can (not Labatts). I've never seen it back east....

Interesting. I'm definitely a Kokanee fan, but not what I would expect the private club set to drink...

It seems that 95% of Americans, regardless of economic standing, drink cheap beer. Kokanee just so happened to be that beer at my club out there. Where I work now I'd say it's either regular Bud or Coors Light. Not Miller Lite or Bud Light. The most common "premium beers" I see are Heineken and Corona.

Portland area has a ton of good craft breweries from Allagash, Bissell Bros. , Foundation and one that is on the way to the NH border called Funky Bow, definitely worth a trip and the best one is So Folking Hoppy!!!
