SD high schools have had some unique nicknames as well, Monroe Wooden Shoed Canaries, Waverly Woodchucks, Vale Beetdiggers, and this one isn’t unique unless you read it wrong SD School
for the Deaf Pheasants.

It’s defintely a catchy name, I wish more teams had unique nicknames, not something stupid like Coyotes or Bison.

The guy who did the rankings for FBS and FCS put one out for D2. Looks like the GAC has the most unique nicknames.

Lehigh was originally referred to as the "Packers"--because of the school's founder, Asa Packer who was a railroad tycoon in the mid-late 1800's. By the 1920's the school paper began referring to their sports teams as the "Engineers", due to the Packer's railroad that provided the endowment basis for the school. This stuck until 1996, when the Administration pushed for a new mascot for marketing purposes. Too many thought the "Engineer" moniker made the school to appear to be only an engineering school when, in fact, engineering accounted for only about 30% of the enrollment. Plus, it's hard to have a warm and fuzzy mascot that kids gravitate to in the form of an engineer. So an election was held through some NYC marketing outfit and "Mountain Hawks" was the leading vote getter. "Clutch" has now been the school's mascot (a lot like the Philadelphia Eagles' "Swoop" only with brown, white colors). My granddaughters love Clutch (proving the marketing study correct), but I still wear my Engineers cap and have my other Engineer apparel--though it is fading and the school does not renew those fashions.

That was interesting. I still prefer the uniqueness of Engineers though.

Me too. I still have my change holder for my pocket--you know those rubberized oval shaped things that hold change and you squeeze them to open and access the coins. It has a football design on the 'slot' side and on the back it says, "Lehigh Engineers". I have had it since my freshman year--1970 and carry it every day to work!

D2 Converse U, which used to be the All-Stars and then became the Valkyries, was previously an all women's school but now is starting men's athletic teams. They plan on changing the name but haven't announced anything yet that I can find.

Also located in Spartanburg, SC; so the Valkyrios (masc. of Valkyries?) would be another opponent the Valpo Beacs should look to schedule ASAP. Well…as soon as the Valkys add Football, y’know.
Peck ‘em you mighty Beacs! Peck ‘em!!
