Lexi Thompson received a four-stroke penalty with six holes to play in the final round of the ANA Inspiration on Sunday for making an incorrect ball placement one day earlier.
The extraordinary delayed penalty knocked Thompson out of the lead at the LPGA Tour's first major of the year.
Complete BS and embarrassing for golf. She basically penalized 2 stokes for improper placement of a 1 foot putt and and an additional 2 for signing an incorrect scorecard because of the incorrect ball placement. The penalty came almost 24 hours after the event and she was told with 6 holes to go.
Pathetic.

If a referee makes a bad call in the NCAA championship game I'm calling in to complain until they change it.
What a bunch of crap.

The two stroke penalty for signing the incorrect scorecard is very interesting, I don't know if I have ever seen that before. I know there have been situations on the men's tour where strokes have been accessed after the fact for "infractions" that were discovered after the rounds had been completed and the cards signed but I don't recall the two stroke penalty for signing an incorrect score card had ever been enforced.
A four stroke penalty for placing a ball about a quarter of inch from where it should have been on a one foot putt is "off the charts" stupid and I am a stickler for rules. They have rules officials with every one of these groups and there are supposed to police themselves, some rube from home calls in and somebody with a 3 stroke lead with 6 to play gets screwed out of a major, pretty harsh.

This whole people calling in to snitch on players needs to go away. It's not fair to people that are on TV constantly (basically just the stars and the leaders) because they can be heavily scrutinized while the players that are never shown don't have the same scrutiny. Everyone has a Rules Official with them, if they don't call it, then no harm done.
And, when she signed her scorecard, the scorecard was correct. At most if should have been a two stroke penalty. You can't enforce a two stroke penalty for signing an incorrect scorecard when you penalize her 24 hours later.

I think this is one of the biggest screw jobs I have ever seen in a sporting event, it probably won't get a lot of press because it is women's golf but the penalty in relation to what actually happened is off the metrics entirely. You are right, only a select few shots are shown on TV so how can someone enforce a situation that is only being applied to a select few players and a select few shots.
Strange.

If they are going to allow that, then they need to film EVERY player, the entire time they are on the course, then review it after each day.
Otherwise, they need to end this idiocy.

Or an easier solution would be to ignore all "feedback" from people watching on TV. What other sport allows this, only golf as near as I can tell. Hopefully, this BS will end with this latest example, but I doubt it.
It tainted the whole tournament, how would you fell to be the winner of this debacle and this was a women's major, I actually feel for both parties involved.

I can't believe they allow this. It has gone on for years. I wish some big name player would go on a rant calling out these mother's basement losers for what they are.

This is analogous to NCAA or NFL replay officials overturning a third quarter ruling with two minutes left in the game.

Then penalizing one team 7 points because they accepted the ruling and kept playing as though the ruling was correct.
