No surprise. Billings and Missoula are probably the two most populated places plus they have 6 NAIA and two FCS schools and ZERO FBS schools....its the only game in town. Same thing here in Arkansas. We may have triple the population but we have 15 football schools- 7 division II, two FCS, two FBS, two NAIA, two smaller school levels also. We're either pushed aside by the big schools or fans are spread out over all those lower level schools. Just doesnt make for building a good fan base when fans fall for the SEC hyoe yearly...Montana residents probably don't have that problem.

Congrats to the Griz. Some great fans out there. The numbers aren't entirely accurate however when some on the list have to factor in home attendance for playoff games. Those almost always hurt normal regular season numbers . JMU's reg season home game attendance this past year was 21,646-almost 1800 per game higher before factoring in the two home playoff games.

If not for having to move the North Greenville game to Greenville because of Hurricane Matthew, The Citadel was the designated home team, El Cid would have been 17th with 12,986 per game.

It really helps not to be surrounded by FBS although some schools do rise above that challenge. I think ISU Redbirds attendance upside is always limited as there are 6 Big Ten schools basically within a 3 hour drive (including one 45 minutes away) of Bloomington/Normal. On occasion the Bloomington/Normal local McDonalds will be using Big Ten cups to fill drinks on a weekend when ISU has a home game.

Yeah but it was still a good showing of upstate Bulldog fans and hurricane evacuees on a Thursday night with a storm on the way. More Bulldogs there than home team folks. It really is a nice little stadium they have up there, and need I say it, nicer than what the Ladson Baptists have.

Grambling officially had two home games.
They however had three home events. They opened the year with Lynchburg University of Virginia in front of 9,500 fans. Though, the event was officially a scrimmage because the HBCU school fell on hard times and has had some accreditation issues and is no longer a member of the NAIA or NCAA.
Lynchburg was one of the schools that ended up being hit by the criteria that was put into place to prevent the 'College of Faith' fiascos.

No, that is not permitted.
There are official attendance policies through the NCAA.
Most stadiums will have standing room tickets which allow them to surpass the official facility attendance which is only seats. Also, when facilities have bleacher seats, they often end up being able to fit more students in than they would if they were individuals seats.

Two different ways to count for the regular season and the playoffs. During the season everybody and their dog gets counted. For the playoffs it's paid tickets that pass through the turnstile.

That's not true. They are required to consult the NCAA's policies for SIDs (sports information directors) which covers all statistics criteria (including attendance). All of these figures have to be submitted to the NCAA, therefore, there are formal policies on how to apply them.
They can use turn-style count (actual attendance) or tickets sold (and tickets must meet certain pricing criteria) for facilities that are closed with entrances (like stadiums).

Part 3 is the section we are disagreeing on.
A. An individual may be counted in the actual attendance figures if any one of the following conditions apply:
1. Attendees are issued tickets that are collected on admission to the game and retained;
2. Attendees enter through and are counted by a turnstile that is monitored by a representative of the department of athletics who verifies in writing the accuracy of the count on a per contest basis;
or3. Attendees enter through a gate at which a representative of the department of athletics counts them individually with a manual counter (or electronic scanner), and the representative provides a written statement verifying the accuracy of the count on aper contest basis. [Bylaw 20.9.9.3.1.1]
For example. A bunch of high school guys are on visits and get sideline passes. They can and would be counted during the regular season. For the playoffs they could get the same passes except they wouldn't get counted unless they also purchased a ticket.

Wow! I think the real telling part of this is the % of capacity. 4/6ths of the Ivy league is less than 30% capacity... what is a good Mendoza line as far as % of capacity? 60-75% some schools are right on target but many schools just don't seem to have the draw in a stadium that is over sized to begin with. Very telling stats.....

Are recruits permitted passes to championship games? I admit that this issue has never come up in my professional experience but my understanding to the intent of the policies would be that they are not able to give passes to championship games.
Either way, there are a set criteria and student-athletes, ref, etc are not included in the count (as was previously mentioned).

I agree when you look at the location of the PA patriot league schools they are in Penn State country, the DC school is in Terrapin country, and Holy Cross has to battle the BC/Umass and UConn games for attendance. Lafayette/Lehigh alters their positions most year based on who is hosting the rivalry game which always turns out great numbers

Georgetown (the university, not the stadium) is neither small (total enrollment 17,849) nor located in the "Northeast and Tri-state area."
The Northeast ends at the Mason-Dixon line. That, and Tom Brady gets no fans in the land of the burgundy and gold.

After touring most of the SLC, I dont buy official numbers anymore. We've had games at Lamar that had official attendance over 7k when there were no more than 1k in the stands. I've also walked into Bowers numerous times without showing a ticket. I'm not insinuating that Sam should be higher ranked or anything because frankly our attendance sucks but I've seen too many obvious errors to give much credence to attendance figures.

It's amazing how far Lehigh's attendance has slipped. While part of it is due to underreporting (many are convinced this occurs) the number is still disappointing. For the first 27 or so years of FCS Lehigh was in the top 25 of attendance. There wasn't a single year were attendance was under 10k during that time.

I was just thinking I remember Goodwin Stadium always being packed with at least 10k. Not sure if the upswing in quality D2 football with ESU/Bloomsburg drove down the numbers or if students aren't coming out in big numbers as past years but no reason they shouldn't have 10k at every home game if not more. Beautiful scenery and most years they are highly competitive at least within the PL.

I've worked in a ticket office.....it's done almost everywhere.
You can come up with whatever number you want as long as it's not going to raise any eyebrows.
A common method is to take tickets sold and average it with A.I.S. and then add in half of the "extra bodies" - players, officials, etc...

Prairie View didn't do bad, considering what we're trying to build. 81% capacity for 4 home games in the new venue is pretty good for us. Makes one wonder how were we doing it in the old venue that seated only 3500.
Fall 2017? Expect those #s to drop DRAMATICALLY as Prairie View attempts to be the highest priced ticket @ the D-I FCS level. 35$ for a walkup ticket price and the season passes increased dramatically (> 420$ for 4 home games xlolx ). Duhhhhhhhhhhh.....
How in the heck can an FCS program charge $35 for an home game as a walk-up price??? Homecoming I can see as some D2 programs now charge $20 for a homecoming ticket brought at the gate but for a regular season game outside of HC that's extremely unreasonable. If this is indeed the prices for 2017 I don't see them hitting over 7500 per home game this season. A reasonable figure IMO would be about $15-20. I'm sure students get in at a pro-rated price or possibly even free so charging the community up for a FCS game won't get their attendance numbers better it'll just cause a steep decline.

I wanna say at Montana we are pushing $50 a game now, homecoming is higher. Cat-Griz is much higher.

Lol it does, the funny thing was the 1st half it was beautiful and sunny, probably about 40 degrees.....at halftime a rocky mountain snow storm blew in and instantly covered the field and blizzard the whole 2nd half....it was wild.

Last year UNI was running $40 walk up tickets for a few games. It also ran $15 for a few games.
This year is a piss poor home schedule - Cal Poly, WIU, YSU, USD and ISUb. I'd bet homecoming is either WIU or YSU (home games in October). If UNI was smart we'd run:
9/9 - Cal Poly - Family Weekend $30
10/7 - WIU - Homecoming $40
10/21 - YSU - $20-25
11/4 - USD - Hall of Fame weekend - $25-30
11/18 - ISUb - Senior Day - $20-25
Depending on how the season goes, what crowds are looking like offer discounts of 5-10 off for senior day and USD

Man, Montana gets more than that if we have a D2 team come in.
As badland said, it is at or above $60 for Homecoming, Griz/Cat, & any premium OOC games.

You don't think you can get more for the Pelini show? Considering they played in the Natty this year and Bo's head might explode, I would think you could get $30-35.

I went back and forth with the WIU/YSU games.
YSU has more draw to it, and as a stand alone at $25 it would sell better than WIU as a stand alone at $20. WIU is the closest team to us at just 3 hours, but they don't travel for dick (they don't go to home games, why would they go to a road game?)
Knowing that YSU would outdraw WIU it's safer to put WIU as the homecoming game. Charge more and it's going to be 16K in attendance vs 10-11K at $20-25. YSU will still draw 13k ish at $25. We come out a head money wise going that route.
I could see the case to flip YSU to homecoming thought. The 21st is a "better" HC weekend than the 7th.
As I was typing this I pulled up Iowa's homecoming - It's October 7th, and a head and Iowa State is also on the road that weekend, so it will be flipped
YSU will be homecoming at $40. It will be 16+K and it will be hostile towards Bo.
WIU will be the cheap game at $20-25. The WIU game may have a cheap option of $10 for endzone seats simply because of playoff potential.
Playoff tickets have to be sold for at least your cheapest regular season ticket. If we sell 2 sections at $10 to WIU then we can sell any potential playoff games at $10-15 to draw people in. Do that early so that if the season goes well you don't have to dip into potential ticket revenue for later home games just to work that same playoff deal.
I'd now guess it'll be
9/9 - Cal Poly - Family Weekend $30
10/7 - WIU - $20 (potential for $10-15 if the season starts slow and the crow looks weak and/or setting up playoff possibilities)
10/21 - YSU - homecoming - $40
11/4 - USD - Hall of Fame weekend - $25-30
11/18 - ISUb - Senior Day - $20-25 (ISUb never draws well. IF we are in playoff position and didn't do the discount for WIU this would be the game to sell $10 tickets to do so for the playoffs)
The whole sell cheap for the playoffs is out the window if the team is good and doesn't need it.
If Poly wasn't Family weekend that would be a $15-20 ticket.
