CHARLESTON, S.C. – More people watched The Citadel football team play in 2016 than any Southern Conference program.

The Bulldogs ranked first in the conference and 20th in FCS in attendance with an average of 11,727 fans per game. That number includes the Oct. 6 game at North Greenville moved due to Hurricane Matthew since The Citadel was the designated home team. The Bulldogs' average attendance in Johnson Hagood Stadium of 12,986 would have ranked 17th in FCS. Including road games, 162,391 people saw the Bulldogs play live in 2016.

In addition, The Citadel brought more viewers to ESPN3 broadcasts than any other Southern Conference program. The Bulldogs were responsible for the highest-rated game by all three measurements used, which are total unique viewers, total minutes viewed and minutes per viewer. The Citadel played in four of the five-highest unique viewer broadcasts, five of the top-six total minutes viewed broadcasts and each of the top-four broadcasts by minutes per viewer.

I've seen this article linked from several sites. There is no reason to suspect the numbers are wrong, but there is also no reference to from where most of these statistics came.

They did lead the SoCon in total home attendance and average home attendance. Here are the stats I pulled from the SoCon web site. This is for the regular season. I didn't track the playoffs. BTW, they didn't lead the SoCon in total in-person attendance for all games.

Yeah, the headline was just spin, but thanks for posting. I will be the first to admit that it was a bit misleading. Every team does it in some way or another in their press releases.

The only problem with these numbers is that The Citadel had 4 actual home games and not 5 even if they were the designated the "home team" for that 5th game accounted for. They were not at home but 200 miles away in the upstate escaping from the Hurricane.

The four games at home were a total of 54,592 for an average of 13,648. I am not sure where they got the 12.9K average for the four game noted in the article. Some math challenged intern I suspect. I went right to all 4 box scores and figured it (Furman - 12,009; UTC - 14590; ETSU - 12978; and Samford - 15015). The game at N Greenville was 5,435.

Also, the Capacity listed above is not necessarily accurate since the entire visitors side was closed for at least one game and a good portion 60-70% of the visitor side was closed for the other three true home games. It holds about 10K or so normally. Not a big deal in any event, but just a note for accuracy sake. Hopefully we can get that side redone soon. The visitor side is supposed to be closed for 2017 and 2018. I think in 2017 there will temp bleachers after it is torn down...bye bye piss wall.

In any event, our home attendance is definitely on the uptick and that is nice. Too bad I stop getting season tickets and lost my seat. Just when we start winning...ugh.

I went with what was listed just prior to the start of the season. Notice the **, I didn't include the capacity note. I did try to find out what the capacity was of the home side but never could find that number. Any idea? Still, the stands are there even if they aren't being used which can make it seem like the crowd isn't as big as it is, especially in light of how in previous seasons only the middle sections of the visitor sides would be open.

Another note, evidently somehow my spreadsheet didn't have Mercer's 5th home game, their total attendance ended up at 56,186 or 11,237 average attendance. A big thanks go out to FuBear for passing along corrected info.

I am not sure either what the home side capacity is. As a rough number, 11,000. It is really hard to find out, plus, we have so many other attendance spots that it is hard to gage. The Altman Athletic center (endzone) always has a bunch of folks standing on the balcony, and I am not sure if they all have a designated seat in the stadium as I never went there. The club level and other private boxes all have a definitive number of seats but not sure of the total. The club level does have designated seats in the stadium as I was in the club level for 6 years or so. There is one other item in regard to attendance that I have still not been able to determine. That is how the Corps is accounted for. It almost seemed to me that about three or four years ago we dropped in attendance and it appeared to be that they no longer counted the Corps, but as I said, I am not certain. Minus all the cadets doing other duties, it could be 1700-1900.

Hard to beat a Citadel home game in the FCS. They're our cross town "rival" but gotta tip my hat...their stadium is great and their fans come out on gameday. Plus the scenery and nightlife downtown Charleston post-game doesnt hurt.

We'll see yall there in 2018! Just signed 3 Shrine Bowlers on the O line (CSUs historic toughest position to recruit) so it should be quite interesting.
