Last night's stunning upset of Cornell by Lehigh revealed in classic detail how the "team"aspect of wrestling comes into play. While Heavyweight Weibel and 125 pounder Fisk are getting major kudos for their back to back falls that really sent Cornell reeling, overlooked was backup freshman Manuel Schubert of Westland, Michigan who was taken down in the first 15 seconds of his 165 bout to his back by #9 ranked Anceravage, who had him 'deep'. Schubert bridged, twisted, writched and did what he could and after two minutes was able to finally get to his stomach. Only those who have wrestled know what it's like to be in that precarious position for two whole minutes. Even then he had to survive the rest of the period and the remaining four minutes of the second and third periods. He survived, losing 12-5, plus riding team. Cornell got 4 team points rather than 6 had Schubert just 'given up' and accepted what appeared to be an inevitable pin. Final team score was Lehigh 21, Cornell 19. Everyone, even those who don't 'win' are still critical parts to the team succeeding.
The win was also coach Greg Strobel's 172nd--now #2 on the all-time coaching list at Lehigh--achieved in 11 seasons.
