Looks like the owners and the union have struck a new deal including a salary cap, salary reductions for players under contract, and a possible shootout to replace the old 5-minute overtime and eliminate tie games.
Does anyone out in AGS-land care?

Heck, I care. But why am I just hearing about this at 2:00 P.M. eastern? There hasn't been any talk about it on the radio today. This is huge news for me.

Gawd, saint, look at those flags. Oakland A's, Pittsburgh Steelers, Georgia Bulldogs, Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia 76ers -- to say nothing of UMass. Are those regionally divided loyalties or what? Or are you just schizo?

Let the fights, er, the games begin!!!
Can't wait, but then again, after the Rangers start sucking again, I'll probably change my tune. (Potvin still sucks, tho)
I like the 5 minute sudden death! Shoot-out are bogus. The only improvement they ought to make is to get rid of the red-line.

NHL really has their work cut out for them if they want to get fan support back.

I am glad that hockey is back if just for the reason that now ESPN will have to cut down on showing that poker crap and other meaningless programming to make space for the NHL games.

You're right, eaglefan. Poker belongs on the Trashsports Channel! It has all the tension of Final Jeopardy.

I am not so sure that ESPN will stop airing poker for NHL games. After all, maybe the viewer rating is better than for hockey. I use to be an avid professional sports fan ( Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, and Dolphins) but after hearing the professionalathletes and owners letting us fans know how little they really care about us, I decided to stop giving my money to them. I would rather give it to my alma mater. I know the college guys will play and do their best.

I'd probably get rid of the red line too but there are a couple more minors ones that I'd make if I were in charge of rules:
Stoppage of play by the team in offense results in the face off coming out of the zone, but a stoppage of play by the defense just inside the blue line stays where the stoppage occured. That should move all the way to the circle.
I would also allow for kicking the puck into the net. You can kick it as a pass, so why not as a shot? This isn't field hockey.
I don't think you should be allowed to touch the puck with an open glove (ie. with your palm). This would prevent catching, throwing and grabbing the puck. Then I would allow for punching it into the net. :D

I guess I'm in the minority but I'll vote for poker over hockey. I would rather watch everyday people playing cards than a bunch of overpaid athletes skating on ice.

They don't have a Umass flag, or any I-AA flags for that matter. :(

For 35 years I was a huge Flyers Fan (1967-2000), but the past few years with the price increases, and increase in foreign players whose names one can't pronounce, and the trap, the frequent roster changes, made me lose interest. I love the hockey game, but I can't say I really missed it this year. Lehigh's awesome wrestling team makes the winter fun. :D

No professional sports will be televised in an area unless they get $$$$. I look at MLB, and see you can no longer get games on the internet without paying for a subscription for radio broadcast. I'm talking radio, I mean radio, not television, but radio. This is just unheard of. You see it's all about the money. And guess what-they will lose the older fan, and as he (like myself) becomes less interested, the offspring will NOT acquire an interest. The end result is the fan base will decline in all the major sports with the exception of football. Why? Football has only 16 games, and it is very well spread geographically across the nation, and all draw a large audience. Though, I do not attend any pro games anymore, and I use to attend about 50-60 games a year.

I think Saint gave us a breakdown on the old board of why he roots for all those varied teams from far away cities so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm a homer when it comes to sports teams. Blue Hens, Eagles, Flyers, Phillies, Sixers and now the Nationals.

I do like my local teams too, Red Sox, Bruins, Boston College, Patriots, there just not my favorite. But I don't like the Celtics.

Unfortunately, ESPN declined the right to show NHL games...SO...looks like more poker crap in the future, cause ESPN won't be showing any games, unless they make some kind of new deal with the NHL. I'm soo glad to have hockey back :)

I'm a huge hockey fan down here in Texas, which is pretty hard to find south of Dallas.
But the NHL is moving over the NBC. That means, unfortunately, that nationally televised games will only be seen on weekend afternoons between the infomercials and the nightly news. And of course, we won't see any hockey games until long after NASCAR season is over.
It is crazy that ESPN pulled the plug on the NHL. We could thank Bettman for that. No more Gary Thorne and Bill Clement. No more Barry Melrose or John Buccigross. Those guys are at the peak of they're game and they have such a good deal as analysts for ESPN, that we shouldn't look to see them jump over to the Peacock.
Maybe Fox Sports Net will pick up some games on the weeknights just to keep the fix going. But I doubt it. Woe is me.

I never was a huge hockey fan. Maybe it's because I could never skate very well.
Do you think the NHL's problems were caused by too much expansion and teams moving down south? Even though there are lots of snowbirds in Phoenix, I have a hard time beleiving the Coyotes can be much more profitable than when they were the Winnipeg Jets.

Only Montreal and Toronto (2 of the original 6) can survive in Canada. Calgary, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Edmonton have been on life support for years now. There are higher taxes in Canada which kill the owners plus I do believe those other 4 markets get money to survive from the NHL. HOckey is a Canadian and Europian sport, doesnt have too strong roots here in the US, especially here in CHicago and we have the great Blackhawk tradition here

Hey, I am not a huge hockey fan, but I think that Wayne Gretzky should abandon his hopes with the Phoenix franchise and just take Bettman's place as Comissioner. Bettman has no future in hockey, and if the NHL is ever going to become one of the "Big 4" again (I think it will fall behind Arena Football or Golf, God forbid), it has to re-invent itself.

That is actually not a bad idea. Gretzky already understands the needs of an owner in the league, and he brings that relationship with the players that Gary Betteman obviously lacked.
However, as a former owner, he could face a little opposition. Just like Bud Selig when he went from majority owner of the Brew Crew to MLB's commish, Gretzky would have to give up a lot of his interest in the Phoenix franchise and still "Tiptoe through the tulips" to avoid being accused of favoritism in the league's agenda.
But, as a former example of marketing in the hockey world, he would be a great contributor to delivering the product to an already peeved fan base.
