Maybe a little more numbers than we want to look at, but figure I'll get this started with data overkill. Just copied and pasted the stats page from the NCAA site for both teams.

In regards to stats, UCA is strong in many areas, both offensively and defensively. They lead the FCS in rushing defense...which may not be as much of an advantage in this case...since we barely run the ball! But we have gotten better as the season has progressed, and do have a few capable running backs and a mobile QB to keep the Bears defense honest. On the flipside, UCA has allowed an average of some of the highest passing yards on defense in the FCS...not the defensive weakness you want going against EWU.

EWU has one of the top rated passing offenses in the FCS. But if that advantage gets negated, things get a lot tougher for the Eagles. And, our defense is statistically in the bottom half, or lower of the FCS in many categories. The defense has been improving as the year goes on, but it seems our offense has become somewhat sloppy in our last couple of games. UCA appears to play a well balanced style of offense, and will exploit what is working well, whether it's running or passing.

People may say the SLC is weak, and UCA's stats were put up against weaker competition. Maybe...but the showing of the Big Sky in their games today doesn't instill a lot of confidence in the strength of the Big Sky competition EWU has put their numbers up against.

Currently, the weather looks like good football weather, and EWU should be able to execute their game-plan. I think EWU lost a little focus towards the end on offense against supposedly "weak" competition, and will come out engaged and ready to play the second season. I think we will see the EWU team that beat WSU and took NDSU to the wire.

I foresee the Bears being a tough match up for Eastern, and it should be a good, hard fought game. Hope this makes for some exciting, entertaining football for all that tune in...with EWU coming out on top of course.

Two good teams and a big bunch of average teams. We don't know about the SLC because they played practically no one...except they're 0-2 against the BSC including the SLC #3 losing to BSC #5. The SLC is 1-0 against the MVFC and the BSC is 4-3.

Two of those are to 5-6 UNI. Who lost to Montana in the dome. It basically boils down to how highly you want to rate a win over UNI. The computers always say UNI is a juggernaut but their record tells a different story.

Based on their performance last night we could write off Cal Polys win as a upset. But we will know more this weekend after SDSU and San Diego both play.

The 10th place team in the SLC (Abilene Christian) lost to the 6th place Big Sky (Northern Colorado), 55-52, in a back-and-forth game. The 3rd place SLC (us), lost on the road at 5th place Big Sky (Southern Utah), 28-23, without our entire starting D-line for a good portion of the game, and our best LB/pass rusher didn't play at all. I would add there was a significant home field advantage for SUU being at nearly 6,000 feet elevation, which definitely had an impact.

I don't know that you can read anything into it other than the leagues are fairly comparable. The Big Sky has more opportunities to play outside FCS competition due to an eight game schedule. Southland schools have essentially one date to schedule outside FCS competition due to nine game schedule and the need to schedule FBS games for budget purposes. And even then, a lot of us need to buy a D-II in order to get a 5th home game. The only school not to schedule an FBS this year was Sam Houston.

Our offense seems to have trouble getting started as well. We tend to score the vast number of our points in the second half.

I think part of that is due to the depth of the Eagle's team this year. IMO, this is the deepest EWU team I've seen. When other teams our wearing down, we have plenty of quality fresh bodies to throw into the mix on both sides of the ball. But I think that is a hallmark of the better teams in the FCS, many of which are in these playoffs.

UCA has learned to keep players fresh for the fourth. In the ISUr game their defense came out late in the third a little tired. By the fourth our offense was able to throw passes easily and our defense caused havoc for their offense with one exception but you can't stop every play. But our strength was our kicking game. ISUr had us pinned several times in the first half but once we were able to flip the field ISUr had trouble.

But to answer your question about starting slow....even the players can't tell you.

Both teams have a strong showing of all conference selections. Once again, not surprising as I'm sure the same is the case for all the playoff teams. Team success often also has elements of individual success.

From Supe's "How they fared" spreadsheet, EWU is higher rated in most rankings, SOS, etc, but UCA is clearly a solid team that can win games. SHSU won handily, but this is an entirely different game. I personally think UCA will be a heck of a test, and don't see the automatic win some have been assuming. I'm hoping to get more time to watch some UCA replays, but at this point, yesterday was the only time I've been able to watch them play this season.

Our O-line has significantly out-performed expectations. Heck, we started with a first and second string in which only one player had started a game. Most a freshmen and sophomores. And we've even had to overcome some injuries to our already inexperienced O-line. That being said, they are performing at a level of a much more veteran group.

I don't take anything for granted. Thankfully, neither does the team, so I think they will be playing as hard as ever on Saturday.

We don't know if Kupp is going to be playing. I doubt that will be revealed until the game. In all honesty, it would not surprise me at all to see him play.

Watch their game vs McNeese, Nicholls and SHSU. Thats 1 dominant win, one close win and one whopping. That will show you all sides. They are better than they showed against us. We started fast as usual and that has a tendency to put teams in a bad place. Unfortunately for them, we played them last so we had learned our lesson vs Mcneese and Lamar in letting up in the second half too much.

Why doesn't he play more, I thought the rotating rbs in our game early killed any chance of establishing any rythmn on offense and it didn't help that none of them could hold onto the ball.

IMO we rotate way too often but we have to because we replaced over 30 players last year. Rotating players so much makes it difficult to establish any kind of offense. THATs why I think we might be starting slow. I watched a RB drop a pass Saturday and he was wide open for a first down. A critical first down. He was cold. Game cold not temp cold. I just don't have a solution for the constant rotations. But the coaches are doing it for a reason I'm sure.

I guess what our fans have to remember is we've only been post season eligible since 2010 and we have been 3 times. Many current playoff teams have been at this level for decades. NDSU has dominated and Sam has done it in the SLC playoff wise for our conference so there has been little room for the Bears. But as more recruits hear about us the more talent we will get. But 6 years isnt much time at this level for our situation.

Yeah. Luckily for EWU Wazzou has one of the most ass secondaries in FBS football so schematically EWU was in business.

Every year is different and every team is different from what they've done in pst years. The biggest factor that plays in my mind is how poorly the big sky teams, including ewu, played against the run in their match ups against shsu over the last five years. (Those are the games I've watched) The Eagles might be stout against the run now and I haven't really studied the stats, but for UCA to be successful I think they need to get the running game going and protect the ball. Early turnovers that give ewu scoring opportunities on a short field will be bad and will force the bears into a pass heavy gameplan which I would say favors Ewu.

EWU is not necessarily stout against the run. But, I think people will find that our style of football lends itself to more possessions in a game than most other teams, and opportunities for opposing offenses to be on the field more. So, statistically, our defense looks worse than they are. Ultimately, either EWU needs to get out to an early lead, and put UCA into a more one dimensional offensive approach, or our D needs to create some stops. Our offense should be able to move the ball well, and if we can get a few stops, that is usually all it takes.

BEAR
November 28th, 2016, 08:07 AM
If our offense starts as slow as it has typically this year, EWU won't NEED to make some stops. This weakness will defeat us again if we don't get our crap together.

tomq04
November 28th, 2016, 09:56 AM
There is also an intangible in football that can't be measured by statistics, which I would call the "will" of a team. EWU hasn't played perfect football (no one but the 2013 Bizon...maybe), but they have played with such passion that it didn't matter what side of the ball was on the field they were over the top outperforming other teams, they have wanted it more every single game.

I would call EWU the unstoppable force, even when turning the ball over 4 times they still won by 31. It will take a team of the same mental caliber to stop them (see NDSU in overtime in the fargo dome), I didn't see that same drive from UCA throughout the season.

Including the whole statistical analysis, and what appears to be favorable matchup for EWU's passing game, and supposedly decent weather I'm taking EWU 42- UCA 28.

BEAR
November 28th, 2016, 10:07 AM
While I'm obviously cheering for UCA here's why I think EWU will win:

1. EWU pass game. Our weakness is stopping the pass.
2. UCA slow to score all year.
3. Injuries to our offense from last game.
4. EWU homefield advantage.
5. EWU playoff experience.
6. UCA's still fairly new to it.

Having said all that, if UCA loses by less than 2 TDs, it's a win for our program. We were picked 5th in a low level FCS league and are now 10-2. Nothing to hang our heads down about. Our program will get more experience and FCS level players as the years go on.

UCA should be very competitive in this game, but after watching UCA get destroyed by Sammy I will have to go with EWU in this game.

You guys are building something really good there. Coach Campbell seems to be doing a good job. Even if he continues with a high level of success and leaves, you have to hope that your admin will make an investment in a great replacement. We need more really good teams in the Southland.

Basically. Pretty much guaranteed to be JSU vs SHSU in the chipper. Other teams should just hang up their cleats.

EWU has had great teams in the recent past only to bow out in the latter rounds of the playoffs. I don't know why , but EWU teams continue to be terrible against the run. UCA has a stable of running backs that can move the ball.

As much as I want to pick UCA in an upset, I think EWU passing game will be a little much after what I saw in the SHSU game. This could be a lot closer game though than some think.

UCA 20

EWU defense gets two turnovers... including a pick by either Fettig or Bruce. EWU defense or special teams gets a TD. EWU offense rolls up 450 yards; 365 passing, 85 rushing.

Completely possible. They are a very good team. One thing that we need to be able to get past is slow starts on offense. We've generally blown teams out in the second half this year, but boy, we've had some rough starts to some games. That needs to improve starting Saturday.

I don't think it would be fair to categorize it as THAT BIG of an upset. Heck, the way SHSU has played against EWU, if UCA can muster some of that mojo, it could be a real challenge for EWU.

Can't wait for this game!

Our offense has to get started quicker. Defense will have to change to a pass defense.

Biggest game changer in the SHSU game was the 4 turnovers in the first half. Plus, the Kat D came to play that day. I think KCK said it was the second game of the season that the first team D played an entire game.

Anyway, yes C. Arkansas has to start the game better. EWU has a pretty prolific offense as well. I do think that the Bears will be able to run the ball though. Portland St had success moving the ball on the ground and C. Arkansas has a stable of running backs.

This game will be interesting to watch.

I went back and watched the UCA/SHSU game the other day and the only fumble that a UCA player actually "just dropped the ball" was the punt return. Other than that the other fumbles were all knocked out or stripped.

I think UCA needs to load up the freshman running back this game....he is a beast ! Still to this day EWU has been unable to stop the running game. SHSU offense has had monster rushing games vs the Eagles in the past..

Well I never said you guys didn't cause the fumbles...just that we fumbled it 3 times. Besides, UCA had been sucking on offense for multiple games before that and doing anything like that against Sam would have ended the game early..and it did. Sam didn't NEED those fumbles...your Oline protected well against our defense.

Yeah, coach hasn't listened to his own players all year..i'm sure he won't play his best players now. I mean in an interview he said he realized later in the game that the run game wasn't working so he decided to change it up...yet us fans and even his players were screaming for that early in the game. I can't complain I guess. The guy has won nattys on every level he's coached AND has never had a losing season...ever.

You EWU fans have nothing to worry about.

On offense UCA can't get a running game going and they can't pass worth a sh*****t. And their defense sucks especially pass defense. Also the offensive and defensive lines tend to wear down as the game goes on.
