In the 2 battles of CAA vs MVFC, I think each conference gets a win. Will be interesting to see the line of this game. My guess is SDSU -5.

As I am editing my above post. I took out the Kick off/Return/Punt/PR yards because as I was doing them I told myself in my head that they don't matter. So....
My prediction is that SDSU loses and I will have something to do with special teams.

I think this is the only CAA vs. MVFC next week. If you were thinking of UND vs. Richmond, UND is in the Big Fluffy.

Fair question regarding Nova offense.
SDSU gives up 28.4 a game. I see a prolific offense from SDSU, but to put it anywhere near the category of Villanova's defense is naive and/or insulting.

It depends on which SDSU defense shows up.
Clearly Villanova takes the cake for being the stronger defensive team.

I'm looking forward to watching much of this game after getting home from attending the Temple/Navy AAC title game in Annapolis (12 PM ET start). I think the Villanova defense is going to need to step up very big for the Wildcats to win this game.

Yes, but when you figure in what offense is going against what defense it evens out pretty well IMHO. Against teams built like Nova (at least on the surface) that are defensive teams SDSU has faired really well this year. Winning @NDSU, beating YSU easily, and dump-trucking UNI. Even if UNI isn't a great team they have a good defense built to shut down teams and the only team to beat them by more than 7 points, including NDSU and EWU, was SDSU.
Generally speaking against average offenses the SDSU defenses has been usually pretty darn good, it's high flying passing teams or the odd triple option team that kills them.

You won't have a problem with Villanova if what you wrote happens on Saturday.
Villanova offense can be an obstructionist to helping win the game sometimes. Yesterday was a perfect example as they raced out to a 31-7 halftime lead only to fall asleep and go to into a shell. Worse they didn't manage the clock & threw a pick 6 on an out route to give the Red Flash a minute ray of hope. Not an unusual occurrence with this offense.
Coach Talley, unlike many of his counterparts, can never be accused of running up scores on teams this season. Nova takes the foot off the pedal too early for my liking & the result is like yesterday where what should have been a 30+ point margin turns into a respectable looking score at game's end. I'm not going to be too upset because it's about winning & not by how much, but Nova certainly made a blowout look like it was a close game.
Villanova has scored 7,0,7 in their 3 losses to Pitt, Richmond, & JMU. SDSU keeps them under 20 they will win. I'm pretty confident that no matter how prolific the SDSU offense appears to be it won't be much better than Pitt (defense held Pitt to 250 yards) & FCS scoring leading JMU (defense held JMU to 270 yards or so). Both games the inept offense or equally inept special teams play gave Pitt & JMU short fields on turnovers, etc & helped to contribute to 2 Tds in each game.
Villanova isn't a pretty team. They slug it out with the best of them. They have a sure NFL player in DE Tanoh Kpassagnon (11.5 sacks) that leads a very active defense. They can be passed on, but most times it's a bend don't break defense.
This game should be concerning for any knowledgeable fan base of both SDSU & Villanova. Both teams have strong cases for how they can win & advance.
I suspect SDSU will be a solid 7+ point favorite.

If the weather is bad that might hinder SDSU's passing attack. If that happens, Villanova has a very good chance of winning.
If it is nice and TC has time to throw it to Wieneke and Goeddert, SDSU will win this easily.

Have you seen some of the MVFC - BSC matchups in the playoffs where a Big Fluffy offense faces a bullet proof defense?
It's a valid question and one of the entertaining parts about the playoffs.
But to be fair...I think Nova's defense is really good with not only Kpassagnon, but Rolle at safety too. SDSU will not be shut down but a couple of teams have slowed them down enough to make things interesting. If Nova can keep the scoring under 30 they have a shot. The offense is the question.

In bad weather games our passing game tends to improve if past games are an indicator. We absolutely destroyed Illinois State (2008), WIU (2011 and 2014) and USD (2014) in bad weather games mostly through the air. The WRs know the routes and can adjust to the footing, whereas the defense's ability to react is greatly hindered. Also, the swing passes we love to run work really well in these type of games, Zenner absolutely went nuts with swing routes against Montana State in 2014.

Absolutely this. High winds are the only weather that might dampen a dynamic passing attack.
There are numerous playoff myths that creep up each year. Another is Southern teams playing in the cold. For the most part, it doesn't seem to affect them nearly as much as is believed.

True and no argument from me but those SDSU teams were completely different compared to Stig's team now. Passing juggernaut compared to those other teams. There is no ZZ now to rely on. With how notorious the wind is this time of year up here, if the wind is blowing a ton then it might hamper the passing attack of TC.
But if it is nice like mango433 just posted, then IMO, SDSU will probably score a ton of points to win. Goeddert is a match up nightmare for any team then add in Wieneke and now add in Mengarelli....SDSU's offense is tough to defend.

Stig has been emphasizing the running game to make us harder to game plan. We have been running the ball more and more. Our offensive line has improved dramatically. I expect a YSU type game. Get up early and chew up the clock. I was much more impressed with the YSU defense than what I saw yesterday watching Villanova.

275 yards allowed in losses.
Id say SDSU will be the best offensive team Villanova plays if they shatter these averages. I'm assuming SDSU fans are expecting a lot more than these averages.
This team has had its scoring average raised by several Tds generated by turnovers by the Villanova offense & special teams. The schedule isn't dotted with a lot of good teams, but they are pretty tough team to score on regardless.

The Brookings airport can handle quite a few large jets (6,000 ft x 100 ft runway). The drive from Sioux Falls airport to Brookings is under an hour (assuming clear roads...that should be the case based on weather predictions so far) so there is little reason for Brookings to have regularly-scheduled commercial flights.

Yeah, living here in ND now, I haven't noticed it being better at all in either state to be honest. If anything it seemed to be iciest in ND while SD doesn't plow until the storm is done for a day, or a week to see if it will melt off first.

Lived in Fargo for a year and SD the majority of my life. Both states have nothing to brag about.
I thought the worst maintained major road that I traveled between Fargo and Sioux Falls was that stretch between Sisseton, SD and the SD/ND line.
The reason why I'd give ND a slight nod for the worst overall was that it seemed after the first major snow storm I never saw asphalt in Fargo till spring. Even the major streets just stayed snow-packed the rest of the winter. I'm not sure if it has to do with Sioux Falls being about 10 degrees warmer on average or if they use more salt, but I can usually see asphalt again here after a few days removed from a snow storm.

I would guess its a county by county, city by city basis.
I work overnights in Sioux Falls and I hear plows going by all the time even when the snow is going to persist through the day. Only thing that might keep them off the road is during blizzard like conditions, which nobody should be traveling at that point anyways.

Coach Talley on SDSU during CAA coaches call this AM:
Moderator: Looking to South Dakota St, how important will it be for you to get pressure on the QB?
Coach Talley: South Dakota State really is a very very impressive football team when you take a look at the way they played against TCU and then their win against North Dakota St. They have some signature win in their program and are certainly one of the elite teams in the country. Their quarterback is probably the best quarterback that we have seen all year and he is difficult to put pressure on because he has great feet and can run. The problem that you have is if you pressure them he can take off and run and break you down and hurt you and he is a threat. He is really fast. He is a running threat that can really get down the field and he has a great arm. They have a package that is very similar to ours - a quarterback that can run and throw and they put immense pressure on you - on top of which their size is tremendous, they have division one size across the front. Very impressive team. We played a lot of teams during my stay here at Villanova and I would put them in the Top 2 or 3 in the country in terms of what we have had to face.
Moderator: Is there a team in recent history that you can compare South Dakota State to?
Coach Talley: I would have to say that they would probably be the elite team. We played Pitt and Pitt was certainly very impressive and I would put them close to the Pitt category, seriously. JMU is really good - we were able to hold JMU down and if we had played a little better on offense it might have been a better game. But this team can run and throw and they have a great package and they play really good defense. So, it is as tough of an opponent as you could have and of course playing on South Dakota you are a long way from home.

Wow, that's certainly some high praise, especially considering Talley is such a seasoned coach and has done it at a high level for over three decades. Class act.

Holy smokes I'm confident in our teams talent but not near enough to say we're that good. Coach Tally is making me nervous now, but for him to say top 2 or 3 is pretty darn high praise. I would agree with him on offense but not so much for defense for sure.

Commercial flights to Sioux Falls. About an hour drive north to Brookings it appears.
After Nova takes this game, looks like you'll be back on the same flight next week, and the drive to Fargo, that's if the Bison can get by San Diego... haha

Hell, people travel south out of North Dakota every January on the way to Frisco, roads are always good up here. It is too cold to snow.

This certainly isn’t as interesting as the debate of which of the two Dakota states plow their roads better, but I just finished watching the Nova/SFU game for a second time this afternoon and thought I’d share my primary take-away’s from a Jackrabbit fan’s perspective…
SDSU D vs Nova O
1. The sooner SDSU can force Villanova to abandon their run game and throw the ball, the better. It doesn’t appear as if the Villanova aerial attack poses near as much of a threat at their ground game, especially the QB read option plays, which have historically given us trouble. The Nova QB’s arm does not impress me.
2. Matching Villanova’s physicality on the line is going to be paramount in SDSU winning this game, and I’m confident we can do that. Nova has some big boys up front, but we’ve seen plenty of massive OL/DL’s this year and have held up very well.
3. Although I feel our young secondary is the weak link of our defense, our players are significantly more athletic than SFU’s. That’s obviously no surprise to anyone, and not to say Nova hasn’t played plenty of athletic teams this year (Pitt/JMU), but I think they Nova fans will be surprised by the speed and physicality of D, especially our LB’s.
4. If Nova establishes the run game and keeps us off-balance with QB runs and well-designed misdirection plays, occasionally burning our young DB’s over the middle with a long ball, we’ll be in for a long day, a la Illinois State.
SDSU O vs Nova D -
1. Getting off to a quick start offensively is going to be extremely important for the Jackrabbits. In the games that SDSU has lost thus far, we’ve gotten off to slow starts and allowed our opponents to jump out to early leads. We can’t afford to come out flat and dig ourselves into a 10-14 point hole early or we’ll be in big trouble.
2. The Big 3 (Christion, Goedert, Weineke) all have to show up and be themselves. I think Goedert is going to be the biggest match-up issue for Nova, but we simply can’t afford for Taryn to be “off” throwing the ball, nor can we have the cold or potentially windy weather affect the way #19/#86 catch the ball. If those 3 all have average-to-above-average games, we’ll be good.
3. Oline needs to continue doing what they’ve been doing all year. We’ve seen plenty of big/athletic front sevens, so nothing extraordinary here – just do your job.
4. Take care of the football, break even in TO margin (or be -1 at the worst) and I think we’ll be OK. If we are -2 in TO margin or worse, we’re going to have a hard time winning the game.
Overall, this is an ideal 2nd round match-up for SDSU from a team strength standpoint. Based on what I’ve seen from Villanova, they’re built similar to Youngstown State or Northern Iowa. Our Offense is multidimensional enough to handle teams who’s strength is their defense. Make them pick their poison and try stopping us. And, on the other side of the ball, it helps when we face teams that lack an explosive passing attack, which seems to be the case with Villanova. Ultimately, I think this ends up being a hard-fought game that stays very close throughout.

SDSU an impressive team on video. Watched them a few times. Looked like Alabama against NDSU & looked human against ISUr.
Nova has their hands full for sure. It's going to come down to how effective the Wildcats offense is against a good SDSU defense. I believe Nova's defense can slow down the offense as their quick 3-3-5 defense is built for spread teams. SDSU qb is gifted & will be a handful.
This will come down to whether Nova can score enough, sustain long drives, & don't put the defense on short fields with turnovers & bad special teams play.
I rank the units in the following order:
1. SDSU offense
2. Nova defense
3. SDSU defense
4. Nova offense
i believe this game will be decided more by the difference in play between 3&4 than the difference in 1&2. 20/25% chance for Nova to win sounds about right.
That said. I believe!! Go Cats!!

After watching the SFU game - I realized that the Villanova kicker did not look all that great and could barely kick it to the 15. I rewound alot of the kicks and they did not look like pouch kicks. His stats for the year are 5-7 on FG, and 35-39 on extra points. The thing that jumped out to me is the 4 missed extra points.

Not a good omen going into a game where it looks to be a close one and even the best kickers (Bergener) struggle if not used to the wind.

The wind really seems to swirl inside of the new stadium. I've noticed the flags on the top of the FG posts are almost always blowing the opposite direction as the massive American flag at Perkins a few blocks away - you get a good view of it off in the distance from Suite level while drinking free beer... xdrunkyx

He's been better in the 2nd half of the season. Nova has had our issues kicking FGs for the past several seasons. That said we're picking pepper out of flycrap as far I'm concerned. Lots of bigger things in this game that I would focus on.
Our offense needs to be efficient. Move the chains & not make big mistakes. Shorten the game if possible & rely on a pretty good defense to out play/neutralize a really explosive offense.
The Nova defense has shown up since the opening kickoff of the Pitt game. John Robertson & friends have graduated. Nova OC seems to forget that sometimes. Zach Bednarczyk is a decent QB. He's more of a run 1st guy, but Nova doesn't have the offensive weapons of a few years ago. They need to have long drives &shorten the game. Stay out of a shoot out. I think if they do it's not going to be the wind or a kicker that decided the outcome of this game. It's a matter of whose style is dominating the play. IMHO.

Would you mind breaking down your D by position group a little bit? If you don't have time in your busy schedule, no prob, I'd just like to hear more about what I should be on the look-out for. What areas or position groups are your strengths and weaknesses? I know you have the freakishly athletic looking DE with long arms but he didn't seem overly physical to me in the SFU game. There is a great LB too, right? How about the secondary? I noticed some serious speed back there. Wonder if you'll try to double Weineke? Or who will match up on Goedert? I think we're going need to be able to run the ball effectively in order to win this one...

The biggest key IMHO is how the Nova D does in the redzone. There haven't been any teams that stop SDSU from 20 to 20, but the successful ones stopped them in the redzone. It's how USeD hung around, why the Marker game wasn't a blow out, and why SDSU lost to ISUr. Fortunately for SDSU they seem to have found some form of an answer for short yardage situations in Kyle Paris, but if Nova wants to win they need to shut down the Jacks in the redzone and don't allow long bombs and explosive runs to end in TDs.

Imo, from the little I watched of the Nova/St. Francis game, I think Nova's defense is going to struggle with 3 things other than the obvious in trying to stop Wieneke and Goedert (Which, good luck with that):
1. Christion's running ability - It seems like they are apt to sitting back in a zone and only rushing 3 or 4 guys, which lends to Christion being able to pick up yards on the ground.
2. The running game in general - SDSU has had a resurgence of their running game in the past couple games, and I think our big guys and quick RBs will give Nova's defense problems.
3. Swing passes - Again, with the way they sit back on pass defense, I see them struggling with swing passes and getting quick guys like Mengerelli in open space.
As far as Nova's offense goes, I wasn't overly impressed, and judging by the 2 FCS games they had against good teams (JMU and Richmond) where they only scored a combined 7 points, I don't see our defense having problems stopping them. I'm not saying SDSU's defense is on JMU or Richmond's level, just saying I don't think they'll have too many issues.
My prediction is a 35-14 victory.

Good analysis. Nova run defense has held teams to 94 yards per game. That is good for 8th in the country. We have played our share of cupcakes so I'll just take the 3 best teams on our schedule: Pitt 86 yds., Richmond 106yds., JMU 126 yds.
Maybe SDSU can run on them, but even the 2 FCS playoff teams & Pitt (who beat Clemson) didn't fare too well on the ground.
We haven't been hurt with swing passes either as our LBs & safeties are quick to the ball.
The QB scrambling is concerning & hitting big plays scare me more than run game & short pass game does.
Nova also played St.Francis without their best CB. He is back & Im sure he will add help as he's a big as corners go at 6'1" & has the ability to be in an NFL camp after next season.
I can see where an SDSU fan deducts a 35-14 score. I don't. I'd stick with a 75% SDSU wins the game & I'd be inclined to say it's 7 or less either way in margin of score.
Looking forward to seeing the new stadium. Nova plays in a stadium built in 1927. Ugh.

If the spread comes out at less than 7 I'll be pleasantly surprised and I'll be throwing some money on it for sure. I'm thinking the spread will be in the 9.5 to 10.5 range to start, as the bookmakers tend to go with almost exactly Sagarin when there aren't huge betting trends one way or the other (Sagarin predicts a 10 point spread when factoring in the home field advantage).
My 35-14 prediction definitely has a homer factor of around 10 points, so a more realistic spread is probably in the 10 range, imo.

Villanova plays a 3-3-5 stack defense. This defense is built to play against the abundance of spread teams that play in the CAA & FCS. The DC Billy Crocker has a veteran group and has been the strength of the team the past 2 seasons.
The defense ranks in the top 5 nationally in many categories. It ranks 2nd in scoring defense, 3rd in total yards allowed, 8th in rushing yards allowed, & 9th in passing yards allowed. Granted we played some mediocre to bad
teams for several games, but they held Pitt to 86, Richmond to 106, & JMU 126 yards rushing. They lost all 3 games as offense scored 7,0,7. Defense did their part.
DL:
LDE: Brian Osei 6'2" 260lbs. 5th year Sr.: transfer from Temple: 3rd team All-CAA team. Sets the edge & opportunistic pass rusher. (43 tkls./4.5 sacks)
NT: split time between So. Bryan White 6'1" 285lbs. & JR. Ricky Young 6'2" 305lbs.: Nose tackles in the 3-3-5 are mainly called upon to occupy linemen to free up interior LBs. They two-headed team has 50 tkls/2 sacks.
RDE: Tanoh Kpassagnon 6'7" 295lbs. 5th year Sr.: CAA defensive POY. All 32 teams have been in to see him. Rumored to be a 2nd to 4th round pick. Runs 4.7ish 40 & will light up the NFL combine. Invite to the Senior Bowl.
45tkls./21.5 tfl/11.5 sacks.
SLB: Ed Shockley 5'11" 220lbs. JR.: 3rd team All-CAA. Was FCS defensive POW vs. Albany. Tough kid and former all-State wrestler. 76tkls/11tfl/4.5 sacks
MLB: Jeff Steeb 6'0" 225lbs. So.: arguably had a better season than Shockley. Replaced Don Cherry in middle. 80tkls./8tfl/3 sacks.
WLB: Austin Calitro 6'0" 245lbs 5th year Sr..: 1st team All-CAA. Vocal leader of defense. A throw back LB who puts u to sleep when he hits u. 85tkls./12tfls./3.5 sacks. Should get NFL camp invite.
SS: Robby "Quaddy" Rolle 6'0" 190lbs. RSJr.: Burst onto the CAA scene this season. 1st team All-CAA. Leads conference with 7 interceptions including 100 yard TD return. 61tkls.

My 35-14 prediction definitely has a homer factor of around 10 points, so a more realistic spread is probably in the 10 range, imo.
I think 10 points will be pretty close for a line.

61tkls.
SS: Shayne Jones 6'0" 210lbs. Sr. : Steady performer who has decent size. 41 Tkls.
FS: Rasaan Stewart 6'1" 200 RSjr.: Solid player. Can hit in run support. 37tkls. 3 ints.
CB: Jason Ceneus 5'9" 170 Sr.: Was 3rd team all-CAA as junior. 32tkls./2ints.
CB: Malik Reeves 6'0" 200 JR.: was 2nd team all-CAA as a junior. Best cover corner. Will most likely get to NFL camp next season. 45tkls./1 int.
Nice breakdown.
The challenge defending SDSU is Christian, Weinke, and Goedart. You HAVE to spy Christian or he'll run all over the field. Then you have to cover Weinke and Goedart. You can double them or give them plenty of safety attention or if you think you have the guy that can match up one on one (I'm skeptical you do) you could go that route. Then the rest of your defense has to be assignment sound and take care of the rest of their weapons most likely without much help.
Villanova seems to have a solid defense, but so do most of the MVFC teams and this offense has been the most dominant in conference we've seen in a few years from anybody.
My take: Villanova keeps it within a score for the first half, but SDSU wins by at least two scores or more at the final whistle.

Yes. It takes longer to drive from the Philly airport to Villanova, then it will take you to drive from Sioux Falls airport to Brookings. It's about a 50 minute drive and no traffic.

I'll go on record saying I'd take Nova and the points and sprinkle a little extra on the Nova ML. That way, if the Jacks win by 12 or more, who cares... I'm happy as hell and bring on the team from up North. The money won't even cross my mind answer I'll just justify it as "well, I didn't go out to the bar last night and drop $200). If we don't win by 1-10, I'm in absolute heaven beacuse I made money AND were onto NDSU. But..... if we lose.... which I don't even want to fathom... Making some solid coin (+350 ML) may help soften the blow a tiny little bit (probably not, but maybe just a little).
Thats honestly the sick and twisted type of **** that goes through my head before these games. It should be noted, I was on the Illinois State ML when we choked in Normal. GoJacks10 can attest to that - told him it was my lock of the weekend before the game!

Two times in a row SDSU called defensive time outs with the play clock at 1 and Nova scrambling to get the ball snapped. Head scratching time outs for sure. I could hear the crowd booing the time out calls. Not sure what was going on there.

The only success we've had is throwing the ball down field to Wieneke and Goedert. Actually, they haven't been able to stop it much. But let's try to prove a point by running the ball against a very good run defense. Smart.

I mean it's very clear SDSU has a very good offense with lots of weapons, but I just don't get why nobody was talking about the coaching in the pregame discussion. I love Talley's aggressiveness in this game going for it on 4th down 3 times already. Statistically, it rarely ever makes sense to punt the ball, but coaches do it to keep their jobs. Talley does not have to worry about keeping his job right now.

I do think that having their stud DE back has made a difference. Which underscores how stupid it was for SDSU to become all run-happy in the first half while that guy was on the bench.

They are, but that doesn't account for passes just being dropped, ridiculous play calling and timeouts, and our qb just falling down when the wind hits him.

They're solid. No doubt. But SDSU's play calling has been bizarre. How many times should we try that QB draw for 0 yards before we retire it? How about the second quarter? No Kpassagnon and with the wind: SDSU runs it. Bizarre.

No. I agree with you. That's a terrific defense. But I'm just mad at our coaches for not taking advantage of the situation when that stud DE Kpassagnon was out in the first half.

'Nova road their defense all season but you need better QB play to win in the playoffs. All year that was their known weakness. A legendary coaching career comes to an end! Great run Talley even though you hate the PL!

You could argue it was 2 dropped passes by a WR and a LB, as well as a questionable 12 man on the field penalty, that cost Nova this game. I am with you that QB play is average at best, but he played a pretty good game today.

SDSU coaches overthought it. They beat NDSU this year by letting it all hang out. 'Nova's defense is great. But SDSU's offense was awful all day. By the time the coaches remembered that Taryn Christion and Dallas Goedert are on the team, their confidence was shot. Ugh. What a brutally ugly win.

Tons of credit to Villinova. They out-coached and outplayed the Jacks today, but it's survive and advance. I think the 3-3-5 defense caused us to over think and under perform. Usually when teams run that D it's because they are smaller and need to compensate for it, but not Nova. That's the most stout I've ever seen that type of D perform against the run, and since it appeared like that was our game plan coming into this, it really messed with our offense today.
The weather may have also attributed to the defensive slugfest that was this game.
Didn't think I'd say this, but I'm actually kinda glad we're going up to Fargo next week to play indoors and against a 4-3.

I missed just about this entire game due to attending the Temple/Navy game, needing to take a longer detour route to get home, and getting some dinner, but it's a real disappointment to hear that Villanova played so well defensively and outplayed SDSU overall but still came up a bit short. Still, the Wildcats had a fine season, and I'm glad Andy Talley at least was able to get back to the playoffs in his swan song season.
Philadelphia area college football teams know/knew how to play some good defense this year.

Just got back to my hotel in Sioux Falls. Congratutions to SDSU on the win & good luck the rest of the way.
Villanova had 4 losses this season & every game was pretty much the same. Defense held a top FCS offense to less than 200 yards total offense including 8 yards rushing.
The Villanova offense didn't turn the ball over, but they had some critical penalties that took them out of field goal & in the 4th killed a drive.
4 losses 7,0,7,7 points scored. One of the best FCS defenses couldn't overcome them in the end.
Congrats to Andy Talley on a wonderful career. He did it right. Won games & graduated players.

I can't wait for your take on the SDSU experience! I've been to NDSU and would love to add another trip to that part of the country.
Villanova represented themselves very well in in Brookings. The Wildcats play a very Philly/Pennsylvania brand of football; tough and physical. Hats off to Nova. Their defense played a very good game. TC really struggled trying to read the 3-3-5 look, he looked completely lost out there, and that's not normal for him at all.
With that said, man SDSU really tried to lose that game in every way possible. Hopefully everyone (especially the coaches) got that bad game out of their system.

The only part of the South Dakota experience we didn't enjoy was the outcome of the game. We stayed in Sioux Falls about 50 minutes south of Brookings. It's my 3rd time there & 1st for football. They city was fun and bigger than I thought even though our day there was dominated by a tragic building collapse downtown killing a young worker.
We made it up to Brookings on game day & went to the local popular sports bar Cubby's. Talked with a few SDSU fans who were very cordial & friendly.
The new stadium is 1st class & the acoustics made it louder than the actual crowd.
It was a tough loss as our defense shut down everyone except their big TE. He will play at the next level for sure.
Nova lost their AA lineman for most of the 1st half to a hand injury, but 2 freshmen (Jeff Wiley & Jafonta Johnson) DEs recorded sacks in his absence.
All in all we had fun in South Dakota. Just wished the result was different.

We had about 50 fans or so there. They had alumni parties watching the game back East.
There was a Villanova-St.Joes hoops game which is an intercity rivalry to contend with & the fact is you all know it's hoops and only hoops at Nova that grabs big numbers of fans.
FCS football doesn't move the dial for the general population of Villanova fans home or away. A story for another day.

Yeah, when a rivalry has a nickname (the Holy War) like the St. Joe's/Villanova rivalry does, it's a pretty big deal. (The fact Villanova won the national title in basketball last year and is ranked #2 in the country - and now likely to move up to #1 in the country - is also a big deal out on the Philadelphia Main Line.) At least the basketball game, which started at 1 PM ET, didn't really overlap with Villanova's football game time-wise, and in fact may have helped build Villanova viewership for VU/SDSU.
On a related note, I wonder if Villanova had any viewing parties for the VU/SDSU game on campus or particularly at the Pavilion after the Holy War game.
