View Full Version : Okay, fire Andy Reid

For the record, I've tried like hell to like Andy Reid. His play calling sucks balls. That's a scientific fact. I can't disagree with his organizational skills or his offensive scheme however. But, his clock management has always been abysmal.
Anyway, since Marty Mornewheig took over play calling, the Eagles offense improved greatly. Tonight, Andy's influence F---ED them!
Okay, 3rd and 1 for a 1st down on the 3 yard line, and they call a pass play to a guy 3 yards behind the line of scrimage! Hell, they had 2nd and 1 the play before. Just dive ahead and get the damn 1st down. It's the 4th Quarter and you're down by 6, so you have to for the TD, right???? NOT BY ANDY REID LOGIC! Just kick the the FG and hope for Providence.
Cut to the gift the Saints gave them. A fumble with 3+ minutes to go. 4th and 10 and the Birds go for it and "seemingly" get the 1st down! Wait a sec, the play never happened on account of a false start. So Andy tells his team to punt! WTF?????? You're okay with going for it on 4th and 10 w/ less than 2 minutes, but not 4th and 15!!!! This was the football equivalent of Grady Little leaving Pedro Martinez in against the Yanks in Game 7 of the '03 ALCS. At this point, Andy can win 2 Super Bowls, and Dick Vermeil will always be more popular than Andy Reid!

I agree everyone is pissed over the play calling down in the redzone at 3rd and one. However, overall, Reid has to be given a lot of credit for getting this team into the playoffs this far. A lot of teams would have tanked and gone 5-11 after someone like McNabb went down.
There were a lot of 'little' mistakes that lost this game too. Despite how great Westbrook's run was, he had a couple horrible drops on passes--one that may have gone for a td. The penalties that negated significant gains--especially the hold and false start by Young. In a close game like this every mistake and coaching decision is magnified.

Tell you what, when the Texans pull this crap, tell me what you think.
They've gone to the NFC championship and based upon superior talent. The coaching has held them back from the Super Bowl those 3 years, and this year as well. Their best shot to win a Super Bowl is behind them. If you're happy with "almost," then fantastic! Knock yourself out. But incompentance is incompentance, no matter how far one "accidently" gets.
If one has all the assets to achieve his full potential, but fails to, that's just not going to cut it.

As well as the Saints coach has done, one thing I question about HIM (to look at the other side) is bothering to run Reggie Bush as much as he does when he has McAllister. McAllister is clearly a far better running back. Bush is an all purpose player.
And messing around with running Bush almost really cost them when he muffed that pitchout.
I know Bush did run for a TD and made a flashy play doing it. But, I think the odds are better if the Saints just stick with McAllister when they want to run the ball. In spite of what Bush did on that particular run, if I'm gonna call an off tackle play in the red zone and I've got the players the Saints have, it ain't gonna be Bush.

I nearly had a coronary when Bush muffed the pitch (thought Brees might have put too much uumph in it though). Course, also said that Payton should have not gotten cute since the Eagle defense was gassing on that final drive.
But who cares ... Saints 27, Eagles 24

Can't pass up the opportunity to note a basis upon which we agree.;) I could not believe the call. They were jamming it down our throats and then pull that crap. I swear, the problem with NFL and a lot of college coaches is they get bored with success and go away from what's been working. Eagles did the same thing down in the red zone with the half-assed call of going wide on a delayed pass on third and one. People out-thinking themselves. Saints made less mistakes than Eagles, and that was the bottom line.

Coaches clearly overthink situations. It's not a terribly complicated game. That Bush fumble in the 4th Qtr. reminded me of the Green Bay "4th and 26" game. The Packers run game had been shoving around the Eagles D all game. The only reason the Eagles had the ball back to make that 4th and 26 conversion was because Mike Sherman inexplicably tried to pass the ball. It made me think that Sean Payton had a bit of Mike Sherman and Mike Martz in him.
When somethings working, keep doing it until it doesn't work.

For the record, I got my ranting and raving about the Eagles over with. Usually its lasts an hour or two with me after Reid (IMO) blows the game for them.
Hopefully they'll keep Mornenwheg as OC, with play calling duties and make similar play-calling for McNabb as he did for Garcia.
Good luck to Jeff Garcia. He ought to get a nice paycheck next year.

I actually agree with kicking the FG, but they should have never had to. When Westbrook was stopped a yard shy on the first down run, he was pleading for the ref to give him the extra yard, but I was telling him to shut up. I'd much rather have 2nd and 1 on the four than first and goal on the three. I figured the Eagles would have at least five plays to jam it in. Run it, run it and if you still need inches, run it again... get the first down then run it, run it, run it, run it...

People make out the 4th and 15 call to be the end of the world - come on, converting a 4th and 15 is a pretty dicey play, especially considering you needed a huge catch to convert 4th and 10 the play before. Reid's just fine and the Eagles are fine with him - they'd be nuts to get rid of him. The birds will be back and will probably win the NFC East again next year and under Reid they will always be a contender. Hey, they may not win a Super Bowl under Reid and if they don't that will be a huge failure, but for the right now there's no better coach for this team.

The best part about Rich Kotite was getting to hear all the Joe Conklin Christmas songs at the end of Richie's tenure here - "It's Beginning to Look like Unemployment" sung to the tune of "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas", "Penalty Flags" sung to the tune of "Jingle Bells" - it was just classic. The most amazing thing, though, is how in the world the Jets decided to hire Kotite after the debacle in Philly, and then be shocked that they went 1-15.

Cmon GF that's a loser's mentality. OK, drop the punt play, 3rd & 1 from the 3 yard line, down by 6 & we throw that crap pass to Tapeh in the flat who loses yardage & we kick a FG. You know that's 4 down territory the way your defense is playing. Reid has NEVER commited to the run & it flat out cost them there. Plus, his draft record is just brutal, Bunkley, Patterson, McDougle. If they still had Freddie does he go for it there?
There won't be a change but don't tell me there's no better option.

Hey, I agree, it should've been 4 down territory on that drive (heck, I was complaining why they ran the ball outside on 2nd and 1 when they should've just jammed it up the gut and gotten the first down then - I generally dislike outside runs that close to the goal line).
As for the drafting, hey, he's average. For every 1st round bust he has he has also done well later in the draft. Plus they do a good job of developing guys who were never on the radar. He's not a great drafter, but he's not brutal either - just average.
So who else is out there who you want? Who could take this team and make them better right now and for the foreseeable future?

I'll give you a name: Bill Cowher
#1: Lurie would pay him the money needed to coax him out of retirement.
#2: Everyone knows that if McNabb comes back healthy next year it's back to 2:1 or worse pass to run ratio, I don't care if they say Andy or Marty are calling the plays. Bring Cowher in & he'd play more to the true strength of this team: an even mix with run/pass.
Let me make this argument more imperative: Unless T.O. gets released by Dallas, Stallworth will be the top free agent WR on the market. Do you think he's going to accept a home-team discount to stay in Philly. I think the Eagles WR's are in good shape if he's back. If he's not back they have to go back in the market.

I'm not sure I'm sold on Cowher unless he's going to bring his coordinators along, and the OC just went to the Cardinals. Cowher's a great PR guy and looks great on the sideline, but he's got just as much of a spotty record of questionable play calling and home conference title losses as Andy does. Sure he has a ring and likes to run the ball more, but that one ring in an ugly game doesn't erase the memory of some real bad postseason performances that came in the decade and a half before it.
Fordham
January 16th, 2007, 05:19 PM
agreed about Cowher. If Marcus is going to give the superior talent tag to the Eagles for getting to their championship games then the same has to be applied to last year's Steeler championship. They were just far and away the better team v. Seattle last year but if you look at the first quarter of that game the better game plan was clearly designed by Holmgren.
Given the loss of the team's clear leader in McNabb and the loss of Kearse early in the season, I think this was a remarkable job turned in overall by Reid this year. Whenever there's a loss to end the season ... particularly a game that was so close ... it's always easy to find a play here and there that could have made the difference in retrospect. The thing to me is that despite the loss of McNabb, the Eagles loss didn't have nearly as much to do with their O as much as their D this year.
If you don't want him, there will be a ton of teams who will take him off your hands. And I think the question of who are you going to get to replace him is a good one. Can't think of any clear upgrades out there.

SWEET JEZZZUSSS NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
That guy is vastly overrated. He got out-coached by Barry Switzer in the Super Bowl for crissakes. He had the better team in the AFC Championship game 3 or 4 times and lost. They say even a blind squirrel finds a nut, and Cowher found his Super Bowl trophy, ironically enough, with his weakest (arguably) playoff team ever.
The Rooneys' crave stability and winning, but not necessarily winning championships. Cowher provided the first two. Frankly, he's just a younger version of Marty Shottenheimer. If he takes another job, he'll find that no other owners posess the same patience as the Rooneys.
