The Cubs have declined their 2017 contract option for starting pitcher Jason Hammel (http://m.mlb.com/player/434628/jason-hammel). The 34-year-old right-hander came to the end of a two-year, $20 million contract with Chicago after the club won its first World Series in 108 years on Wednesday. The Cubs decided not to exercise the $12 million option.

Braves go out and quickly sign RA Dickey and Bartolo Colon.
Not sexy signings, but are two veteran innings eaters that won't block the progression of any of Atlanta's young minor league arms.

Braves deal a couple of mid-level prospects for LHP Jaime Garcia.
Atlanta has already been really active. They are widely connected with Chris Archer and Chris Sale. Either of those guys would give the Braves a pretty formidable rotation.

Chris Sale to Boston for four minor leaguers, two of them ranked in the top 50 of prospects.
Hopefully he'll have a good relationship with the front office, something he didn't have in the South Side... xsighx

Whitesox with a great trade..... Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez are young pitchers I like, and toss in Yoan Moncada, the highly regarded Cuban prospect, started the year at A ball in was in the majors in September with the Redsox, he was rushed a bit .... haha, Redsox must of seen something in his attitude that didn't sit well

I think this is just the Red Sox making a run for it. Moncada may well be great in the (near) future, but Sale is great right now. Of course there's always stuff we don't know, but this isn't a crazy move for them.
Also, Yankees sign Aroldis Chapman, 5 yr/$86 million. Money doesn't bother me, but 5 years seems like a long time for a closer like this

Red Sox and Washington in definite win now modes. I imagine the pressure to win in D.C. is pretty immense. Several inglorious post season exits, and the core of the team is rapidly all approaching free agency where they will be almost assuredly incredibly expensive to keep together.

Phillies have signed Blanco and Hellickson to new contacts, which I think are good moves. Hellickson gave them a very good season and with any decent offense would have won close to 20 games.
Phils also signed Herrera to 5 year contract with two additional years as club options. Still a raw talent, it looks like a good move.

surprising as Toronto passes thru Cleveland a few times a year, EE should of known better.... seriously though when I think of the Indians home field I'm not thinking it's a park that is friendly to right handed power hitters...

While in Daytona Beach last weekend, stopped by Jackie Robinson Ballpark and Museum. Nice outdoor museum from where it all began. Jackie Robinson played his first game against a Major League team, at this ballpark on 1946. Robinson's Montreal Royals played the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Phillies signed Freddy Galvis to a one year deal. A good move. Galvis very versatile and athletic. Plays an excellent SS and has some pop in his bat, but can play just about any position. Wouldn't be surprised if he is the 'emergency' or third catcher.

While it's too early for a 2017 MLB thread to be created this early... another MLB ace is gone forever. Yordano Ventura of the Royals was killed in a car accident in the DR yesterday. Two aces gone within 5 months. Sad. And a former MLB infielder who last played in South Korea, Andy Marte, died in another car accident in the DR yesterday.

I well remember Marte playing as a minor leaguer in the Braves' system. He was considered a top prospect and potentially the heir apparent to Chipper Jones at 3B.
Both gone too young.
