LEBANON, Ohio - Coastal Carolina rising sophomore Zack Byrd of Calabash, N.C., shot a 1-under-par 69 and is tied for third after the first round of stroke play qualifying in the 80th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at the 6,966-yard Shaker Run Golf Club.
College of Charleston senior Kellen Altman of Myrtle Beach is tied for 53rd after a 74.
Byrd teed off on the 10th hole and capped a 2-under 33 on the front with a birdie on the ninth, and Altman began on the 10th and double-bogeyed the seventh to close with a 38.
Michelle Wie shot a 76 and is tied for 84th.
The low 64 players after today's second round advance to match play.
The winner gets an invitation to play in The Masters next year.
