You gotta Lovett with FCS offensive player of week
By CRAIG HALEY
STATS FCS Senior Editor
(STATS) - John Lovett is a quarterback by trade, but he's a little bit of everything in the Princeton offense.
It just depends on where the Tigers line him up.
Cornell will attest, as Lovett was responsible for a program-record seven touchdowns in their Ivy League game this past Saturday.
Lovett, New Hampshire's Quinlen Dean, Youngstown State's Darien Townsend and Kennesaw State's Desmond Johnson were named Monday as the STATS FCS National Players of the Week for games played Oct. 28-29.
NATIONAL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
John Lovett, Princeton, QB, Jr., 6-3, 220, Wantagh, New York
Princeton coach Bob Surace relishes that Lovett is on his team because he doesn't want to worry about defending the jack-of-all-trades. Lovett threw for four touchdowns, rushed for two and caught one in the Tigers' 56-7 victory. He shares time at quarterback with Chad Kanoff, the better passer, but Lovett was just as effective in completing 10 of 11 passes for a career-high 194 yards, and he caught a 7-yard score from Kanoff as one of his two receptions for 19 yards. The FCS scoring leader (15 TDs, 12.9 points per game) also had six carries for 47 yards.
Honorable Mention: Dom Bragalone, RB, Lehigh; Tarik Cohen, RB, North Carolina A&T; Devlin Hodges, QB, Samford; Jonah Hodges, QB, San Diego; KD Humphries, QB, Murray State; DeVante Kincade, QB, Grambling State; Kamron Lewis, WR, Saint Francis; Detrez Newsome, RB, Western Carolina; Blair Roberts, WR, Duquesne; Bryan Schor, QB, James Madison; Justin Watson, WR, Penn; Chad Williams, WR, Grambling State
NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Quinlen Dean, New Hampshire, LB, R-Fr., 6-0, 227, Greenbelt, Maryland
The Wildcats have a handful of influential first-year players on their roster and Dean had their signature performance in a 43-14 win over then-No. 20 Stony Brook. Dean had only 12 tackles entering the key CAA Football game, but he a recorded a career-high nine stops (seven solos), made his first two career interceptions and both forced and recovered a fumble. All three takeaways occurred in the second half and led to touchdowns as UNH built on a 15-7 halftime lead.
Honorable Mention: Pat Afriyie, DE, Colgate; Tre Dempsey, FS, North Dakota State; Garrett Dolan, LB, Houston Baptist; Paul Hunter, DB, East Tennessee State; Jeffrey Pegues, LB, Gardner-Webb; Jerry Powe, LB/DB, Lafayette; Cole Reyes, S, North Dakota; Marquis Smith, LB, Savannah State; Brett Taylor, LB, Western Illinois
NATIONAL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Darien Townsend, Youngstown State, WR/PR, Jr., 5-10, 170, Youngstown, Ohio
Call Townsend the hometown hero. The Youngstown native provided the winning touchdown in a 13-10 triumph over Indiana State on Homecoming Day at Stambaugh Stadium. With the Penguins trailing 10-6 in the fourth quarter of the Missouri Valley Football Conference matchup, Townsend caught a long punt at his team's 21 and returned it 79 yards to the Sycamores' end zone with 9:19 remaining. He also returned another punt 12 yards and caught a pair of passes for 24 yards.
Honorable Mention: Trey Colbert, ST, Incarnate Word; Casey DeAndrade, CB/PR, New Hampshire; Uriel Hernandez, PK/P, Savannah State; David Howerton, ST, Wofford; John Santiago, RB/KR, North Dakota; Sean Smith, PK, Dayton; Micah Wright, WR/PR, Maine
NATIONAL FRESHMAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Desmond Johnson, Kennesaw State, DE, R-Fr., 6-2, 214, Rome, Georgia
Johnson had a monster game in the Owls' 49-17 road victory over Monmouth in the Big South Conference, highlighted by a 30-yard scoop-and-score fumble return for a touchdown. He also recorded a career-high nine tackles (six solos), had a sack and forced two fumbles. The Owls limited Monmouth to 53 rushing yards on 24 carries and without any points in the second half.
Honorable Mention: Drew Bevelhimer, PK, Butler; Marlon Bridges, S, Jacksonville State; Shane Bucenell, QB, Charleston Southern; JaVaughn Craig, QB, Austin Peay; A.J. Hines, RB, Duquesne; Jah-Maine Martin, RB, Coastal Carolina; Kurt Rawlings, QB, Yale; Robert Scott, CB, Hampton; Prince Smith Jr., CB, New Hampshire
