The bottom line is this, this banter has been fun for sure. It's all good.

But the coaching staff and players of shsu do not care about the rankings other than being the Top team is a program goal, as i'm sure it is of all other programs represented on here.

Their stated goal is not to be number one in october, but January 8.

The players on the field do not make the schedule or recruit for the SLC, they just go out and handle business bs the guy in front of them just like every other team.

So congrats on all the rings NDSU has. Congrats on the 62-10 Eli Jenkins crybaby revenge game.

The fact is, none of it matters this year, right now.

One of the top teams on here will have their crack at shsu to prove the critics wrong....assuming We don't crap the bed vs a lesser opponent at some point...which i have seen them do the last two years so who knows.

The rest of the regular season and the playoffs will answer all the questions we all have and The True Champion will be crowed just like every other year.

The only time this season we get to see what SHSU is truly made of is the last game against UCA. The only game on the schedule where a team has a record above .500 (unless McNeese pulls a win this weekend).

I am not saying they are not the best team, but they really have nothing to prove they are. They can't help the Southland is crap this year. They can't help the conference only allows 2 OOC games. They can help, though, that those two are OK Panhandle and Texas Southern. I prefer to see teams ranked at the top that have proven something. I would probably say they belong in the Top 5 because they have history, and haven't lost. I just can't see anyway you can defend them being #1 based on what they have done this year. Especially over teams like EWU or NDSU who have good wins and proven they are good again this year. Heck even JSU has proven more with a nice win over CCU and crushing the other terrible teams on their schedule.

Actually we can't help that either. We were supposed to play New Mexico but they back out in April or May i believe and they only game we could find was Panhandle State. If we played and beat New Mexico like we should have then we wouldn't be in this predicament.

If we played worth a **** vs JSU last year we wouldn't be in the spot where people question us either. JSU may well have been the better team but they weren't that much better like the score indicated. We went on a very tough travel schedule in the playoffs. Had the kickoff fumble and QB fumble almost immediately and it snowballed in a hurry. I was on the sidelines for that and about half the other games. It was a totally different feeling after the turnorvers. Sometimes you just have games like that. We were too tired and didn't have the QB play that day to rebound from the early mistakes. **** happens but remember that was a team that made the Semi's last year.

I would tell you all the reason's why this team is better but yall wouldn't listen anyways. So i'll just let yall find out come November and December.

I will say that I hope to god the Bison don't end up on our side of the bracket though....sure had a good time tailgating at Frisco with you guys!!

But on the bright side....if yall do end up on our side it should be a good crowd at Bowers and I'll be happy to give one of you guys a couple bucks for your frisco tickets xthumbsupx xlolxxlolxxlolx

But seriously....this team is quite a bit better than last years team at nearly every spot. Its rediculous to watch how crisp they are on Saturdays. Going into Christmas - Winnable FBS plus a sure fire win FCS plus conference that had 3 playoff teams last year and UCA
Going into summer - ****ty D2 and descent conference
Present day - ****ty D2, ****ty Conference (minus UCA)

All we can do is slaughter the teams in front. Most weeks we have done that and put the 3rd string and alot of walk-ons in who gave up some points. Oh well. Got experience and hopefully some well rested starters by playoffs. Good luck the rest of the season boys. I can't tell you who's going to win the election but i can tell you one of the teams that will be in Frisco xnodx

I'm really not trying to be an arse, but honestly..it's like people act like our AD doesn't try to do that every year. But none of the lower tier FBS texas teams will play us. and None of the Big 12 teams in texas will play us because they are ill trying to get Power 5 brownie points.

i know for a fact, our AD has tried to get UofH to play us every year for 5 years but got rejected.

i ask again, who would you like us to play? We keep trying. I can't explain how NDSU gets teams to agree to it. Maybe you guys don't need the money that we need for travel. But enough is enough with the "you don't schedule tough" talk. It's not true.

It's not the FBS game. It's not even the 9 game conference schedule. It's that remaining game that you need to make sure is a playoff worthy team. You have Richmond and UND coming up, so that will definitely help, but you can't schedule a Texas Southern as your best OOC game and expect people to not question it.

The last time you scheduled a top tier team, you got the FCS kickoff game on ESPN, so that worked out. Richmond can definitely be that same level and we'll find out more about UND before your series with them to determine if that's kickoff game worthy.

Yeah, we missed him for the first three games of the season but he's started to get back into the groove of things and make plays. Eli's accuracy has been suspect at times and I'm pretty sure that OVC refs don't know what PI is but aside from that he's only been improving week to week.

Our biggest issue for our passing game in my opinion is our other wideout and our slot. The biggest thing for our offense last year was all three of our receivers were complete weapons. We may have had the best receiving corps in the FCS last year and we were able to use them all and spread the field. It seems our passing game has relied really heavily on Barge since he's been back and we haven't been spreading the ball around well. The other two guys are capable of making plays but we haven't been giving them as many targets.

But yeah Barge has been doing well.

How do you know SHSU "improved dramatically"? Who have they played that showed they have improved dramatically? Is it the 26.57 ppg they are giving up? Is it the impressive win over Ok Panhandle? Maybe it was the impressive win over Houston Baptist. In reality all they have done is be good last year and then win every game in their cupcake feast so far. No team they have beat so far has a winning record currently. And they are still giving up 26.57ppg.

You can go on your anti-UNI rants all you want, but this has nothing to do with UNI and everything to do with the weak ass schedule your butt buddy KC Keeler put together.

Instead of getting all sensitive, let's meet in the playoffs and see if we have improved. That way no excuses.

On overage they have been leading 32-7 at halftime and have only given up 51 first half points, 21 of which were against incarnate word and 14 were in the season opener against opsu. So of the 186 points they've allowed all season 135 have come once the game was in hand. 73% of opponents points are in the second half. So in playing this trash collection of a schedule the shsu defense has actually been very good. Then they have slept though the second half. A trend they need to fix.

Dismiss the Kats as an offensive circus act if you'd like. But I'm confident in what the defense is capable of doing when it matters because I've watched them do it for 7 games.

I think we are all fine with Bearkat fans being bullish on the rest of their season. The idea that you guys have locked up the 1 seed or that this poll has it correct, is what the rest of us aren't sold on.

I second this. Fair point kalm. As an independent observer, I have to question why Sammy's head coach, with all his connections, couldn't secure better quality FBS / FCS programs to play. I see Sammy will play Richmond next year, so perhaps he is already making things happen with respect to scheduling. Time will tell I suppose. That being said, I still believe Sammy is the best team in the nation and is deserving of their number 1 ranking that you guys are all upset over.

This. I don't think there is a soul on here who thinks SHSU is a bad team. Once you get into the top five it gets really hard to judge when a team hasn't been tested yet.

No one is saying that, my whole deal is just to ask you guys to come up with the answer to how we should be viewed from here on out.

For example.

I have loads of respect for EWU, NDSU, JSU, SDSU etc. ..I know who they are..i know what their programs are capable of becaus i've seen it with me beady little eyes.

Therefore, should one of said teams end up with a really weak schedule and have been obliterating it, maybe it's just me...but i think it would be down right rude, snobby and ignorant to assume they are not capable of still being a top 2-3 team when that's basicallu haw said team ends up nearly every year historically over the last 5 regardless of schedules being weak.

At some point, people need to wake up and realize that SHSU can and will compete with the top teams for the title so you can basically throw out the schedule prior to the playoffs imho.

So i could really care less where we are ranked , Personally..i think EWU should be the #1 right now. But as some have suggested that shsu should barely be top 10 is nothing more than idiotic smack talk.

Western Michigan or Boise St would probably be better examples but to answer your question no not #1 because there are better teams undefeated also in front of them. Nebraska should be #5 and if they win their next 2 should be #1.

You're definitely right... comparing a Southland team to a Big Ten team doesn't make sense. A more accurate comparison would definitely be to a Mountain West or Mid-American team. At least FBS is smart enough to not rank teams from lower conferencs that high because they realize they haven't proved anything because they don't play anyone worthwhile.

More than Delaware has recently. IMO I would take them over SHSU. They were a couple of unlucky twists from knocking off TCU, and did knock NDSU off. They also have wins over other ranked teams. Nothing that SHSU has done this year.

It's not that hard. They are a good team, but haven't done enough for me to put them that high. Again, not their fault they have an easy schedule, but that doesn't mean they should be ranked that high. If they had a more difficult schedule, I don't doubt that they could still be undefeated, and in that case, I wouldn't have a problem with ranking them 1-3. We could play theoretical scenarios all day though, it doesn't do us any good. All you can do is look at what has happened, and based on that, they're 4-8 in my book. Sorry if you don't like it.

Well, the results show that Sammy has beat up a lot of bad teams. So based on that, I would say they shouldn't be ranked so high. Your participation trophy argument could go against you, because in my eyes by ranking SHSU so high, they are saying "Aww, it's ok SHSU, it doesn't matter that you haven't actually beat anyone, we're still going to award you for going through the motions".

Also per the ratings, Sam has the easiest schedule in the SLC.

I never have disagreed with the weak schedule but I don't credit teams for losing. I was just wondering what made UCA a difficult game. If Sam wins then I don't see it as any different than beating SFA, Lamar or any other team. Perhaps if we are down at some point in that game I may agree they are difficult but we are a few weeks away from that game.

Here's some fun...to draw two threads together and since outside people love to bring UNI into things.

I wanted to see what UNI *might* do against SHSU's schedule. UNI is currently 3-4 and not ranked. UNI has played 4 teams currently in the AGS top 25 (#1, #14, #15, #22). Plays #3 this weekend and has a game against #7 and #13 left this year.

Anyway...

UNI isn't ranked because they are 3-4. I'm not arguing they should be ranked. I didn't vote for them. SHSU thinks they are #1 because they haven't lost. To an extent that's tough to argue.

I was curious what might happen if they switched schedules. Thanks to computer simulations we have an answer....kind of....in theory

Assuming both continue to win and both enter the game with a 1 loss UCA team. I think by then UCA will be in the 8 - 12 range assuming some other teams lose by then probably down to 8-12 depending on how the game goes. Are they competitive or do they get blown out? Lots of football by a lot of teams before then. Your thoughts?

When I say SHSU "earned it," I mean the fact they were preseason #2 and moved up a slot when NDSU — who I think is the best team in the country — lost.

Let's stop giving the STATS voters more credit than they deserve. This isn't FBS where everybody gets to watch the top teams in the country week in and week out. Very little intel outside of their particular conference. Plus maybe they don't give a damn about the voting process and decide, "Hey, who cares? There's a playoff to decide it all."

God I hate to enter this tread and I'm not trying argue either way, but one potential problem with the above analysis is you are looking at data and assuming it is representative of the teams ability. Consider for example that Sam had played the entire game to maximize the result. For example, take Lamar Sam was ahead 30-3 at half, the final score in that game is not a representation of how much better Sam is over Lamar. That is true for ever game. If you adjust and use 3rd quarter results. Btw, that would be generous because Sam has basically not even attempted to score in the 4th qtr of a game. But if you do that, you will find a much different result. The computer would tell you that Sam won every game on your schedule and only a couple of them would have been close because the system you are relying on to make your argument considers margin of victory and assumes that it is the maximal effort by both teams or in some cases limits it to 28 points. I'm not saying that makes it correct but I do think it is something to consider when using computer based rankings to argue that Sam isn't a good team. That is wby it is so hard to tell how good or bad we are. Good luck with the rest of the season, I for one would love to see you guys make the playoffs.
