North Dakota State’s volleyball team now has more than one setter.

Appalachian State’s Kayla Anderson has transferred to NDSU, adding depth to a position true freshman Mattie Johnson had to handle all by herself last season.

“Adding depth to that position will be huge for us,” said NDSU coach Erich Hinterstocker. “I’m looking forward to Kayla and Mattie competing at that position.”

Like Johnson, Anderson will be a sophomore next year. The 5-foot-10 Anderson played in nine matches for Appalachian State, a Division I school in North Carolina that recorded a 23-10 record and reached the semifinals of the Southern Conference tournament last year.

Anderson was a four-time all-conference performer at Lake Holcombe High School in Wisconsin. She was an all-state selection her senior year.

Anderson’s high school and AAU coach was her mother Jean Anderson.

“Her dedication to the sport of volleyball and her work ethic are two qualities that are so important to our team,” said Hinterstocker, who in his first year as head coach last fall guided the Bison to a 17-13 record and a third-place finish in the Division I independent tournament.
