EWARK – Eric Buckson was thrilled with the idea.
It was the reality of it actually being possible that made him a bit wary.
The Polytech High wrestling coach sat around tables as a member of a feasibility-study group gathered in the Carpenter Center Monday night. It was there by the directive of a section in a Senate grant-in-aid bill passed in the General Assembly this summer to consider the possibility of the University of Delaware reinstating varsity wrestling.
Delaware dropped the sport 25 years ago.
“We can talk about the greatness of wrestling and the University of Delaware, and how it all relates,” said Buckson, who also holds elected office as a Kent County commissioner.
“At the end of the day, it’s going to come down to Title IX, and how does it fit in with the University of Delaware and what their picture is for athletics. Do they want it? If they do, great. But if they don’t, what’s the state’s decision? That’s why we’re here, because the state made a decision they were going to require Delaware to look into this. If the funding is provided and it fits Title IX, are you going to do it?”
It was too soon to know the answers to those questions after the first of several meetings of the group, which featured new Delaware athletic director Chrissi Rawak; State Sen. Nicole Poore (D-New Castle), who pushed for the legislation; Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association executive director Tommie Neubauer; Vic Leonard of the Delaware Wrestling Alliance; National Wrestling Coaches Association executive director Mike Moyer; high school coaches; and UD and state government representatives...
