Week 4

Another tough week for the Patsies.

VMI @ BUCKNELL
COLGATE @ Richmond
Pennsylvania @ FORDHAM
Columbia @ GEORGETOWN
Dartmouth @ HOLY CROSS
Villanova @ LAFAYETTE
Princeton @ LEHIGH

Game of the Week: A case could be made for every one of these games, but there is only one “Game of the Week,” so how about Dartmouth @ HOLY CROSS – Do the saders have any rebound left in them after being handled by Albany?

Other games to watch: I kind of like the battle of the bottom feeders in DC: Columbia @ GEORGETOWN. A Hoya win would be a minor boost for the League.

VMI - I'm sorry, Bucknell fell to Ivy cellar-dweller Cornell, and that is not good.
Colgate - Richmond has begun its fall from the polls due to the RB's injury.
Fordham
Georgetown - Columbia couldn't get past the Red Flash
Dartmouth - the Cross can't get its feet stable until conference play starts
Villanova
Lehigh - Princeton played close against the 'Pards.

Last Week: 2-3 Season: 13-5

Bucknell 24 VMI 21 - Bucky finds strength in their darkest hours.

Richmond 38 Colgate 20 - Raiders find a poisonous Spider waiting for them.

Fordham 44 Penn 28 - Rams too much for Quakers with a bye week to prepare.

Georgetown 21 Columbia 17 - Albany/Georgetown FCS playoff semi-final game?

Dartmouth 24 Holy Cross 20 - Big Green could be in for a let down game after win over cross state rival UNH, but it's the Saders.

Villanova 31 Lafayette 10 - Cats ruin parent's weekend.

Princeton 37 Lehigh 34 - Mountain Hawks offense in high gear now, but the defense is another story.

Bucky floundering. Don't see a win here. VMI 24-16
Colgate on all cylinders. Spiders caught in their web of injuries and feeling sorry for themselves. Raiders 34-27
Fordham should score alot. Penn will too. Rams at home is difference, 45-42.
Hoyas -- the Rocks are rolling! Little GT-Go, 27-21
HolyCross needs help. Big Green win big, 35-14
Villanova has too many weapons for the Leotards. Wildcats 35-21.
Lehigh Offense on fire. Has the Defense finally figured out the scheme? Could be a high scoring affair. Mountain Hawks start making their case, 42-27.

VMI @ BUCKNELL – VMI is 1-1 with a victory over Morehead State. The Buffaloes are always in a “this is the year” mode, but it never happens. This is a winnable game, but no real reason for anyone to desert the pickup games at Sojka for this. Never thought I’d pick VMI against a Patriot League team.

COLGATE @ Richmond – A ‘gate believer - for the moment.

Pennsylvania @ FORDHAM – Lehigh is better than Penn. Fordham is better than Lehigh. Do the math.

Columbia @ GEORGETOWN – Hope overcomes belief.

Dartmouth @ HOLY CROSS – The Crossers disappoint again. Could sader87 be right?

Villanova @ LAFAYETTE – Andy Talley was right. Oh yeah, these schools are 60 miles apart. How come it took 96 years to schedule this game?

Princeton @ LEHIGH – Tigger almost couldn’t handle Drew Reed and nothing else, so Shafnisky and a little running should bury them.

I think all PL-Ivy matchups this week will be close.

Whether Dartmouth can beat HC will depend on which version of QB Jack Heneghan shows up on Saturday. If its the same player who went all John Elway on UNH in the fourth quarter, then Dartmouth wins easily. If not, it's anyone's game.

Why not Penn-Fordham as the game of the week? Arguably the best teams from each conference, Harvard excepted.

And while not the best teams from each of its respective conferences, Villanova-Lafayette should be a better game than some would think.

4-1 a week ago (yep, Bucknell), up to 14-4 for the season. Cruising along to this point, but now things get interesting. Quite an eclectic slate for the League this weekend.

VMI at Bucknell Bucknell Oh Bison. Oh deary dear, what are we going to do with you? A loss to Cornell at home? For shame. Looking back at past match-ups against the Keydets, the Bison have won some close ones three years straight. What is it with Bucknell and the exact same OOC teams? VMI, meanwhile, has won more than 3 games exactly once in the last 12 years. They've won exactly 2 games for 5 years running. Has the move to the SoCon improved their program? Who knows? So many questions, just in one paragraph masquerading as a preview. Go Patriot League.

Colgate at Richmond Colgate As far as I can tell, this is the first regular season game between ranked teams involving Colgate since they faced off against Lafayette back in 2009 (a game the Leopards pulled out in a defense-optional 56-49 contest). UR is arguably the most important OOC game on the schedule, though it's dimmed significantly after the Spiders got squished out on Long Island. The Raiders looked solid all around in thumping a traditional bogeyman, so this will be a very interesting test of where the team stands. The defense in particular looked stout against a usually explosive Yale offense, and they'll need that to continue this week. I was pretty straightforward about a potential 0-3 start to the season, so a win down in Virginia could suddenly set us up for a really big season. Should be fun.

Pennsylvania at Fordham Fordham The Rams are 1-1, and exactly what I thought they would be, that is better than Elizabeth City State, but not as good as Navy. Penn is a much more interesting match-up, and the Quakers just took one on the chin against Lehigh. Rams have won the last 2 against the Quakers, which includes dropping 60 on them in 2014. Fordham may need all 60 points again, but I think they outlast one of the Ivy's best at home.

Columbia at Georgetown Georgetown The two perennial bottom-dwellers of these conferences square off again. It's an interesting question to me if Columbia is actually better than Marist, who the Hoyas beat on the road. I mean, they probably are, but I'm not sure I can say that with confidence at the moment. In Georgetown's own friendly confines, why not take a league-mate again? 3-0 Georgetown, you say? Sure, why not.

Dartmouth at Holy Cross Dartmouth I certainly picked the Crusaders to lose last week, so I'm not surprised they wound up without a victory. But that loss to Albany sure doesn't look good. Meanwhile, the Big Green are coming off a huge win at New Hampshire, a team the Cross couldn't overcome. I expect HC to play better at home, but I expect Dartmouth to play better in their second game. If the Crusaders are looking for redemption in this campaign, it will have to come in the League season.

Villanova at Lafayette Villanova Typical Leopards. A dismal offense suddenly drops 31 on Princeton, only to watch the defense surrender 35. Even when they lose the Leopards feel unpredictable. Andy Talley's quest to quest to play the Patriot League schedule he always secretly dreamed about continues, as the Wildcats pull one out that is closer than it probably should be.

Princeton at Lehigh Lehigh Now isn't that a bit more like it from the Hawks, watching them drop some big points on Penn for a nice road win? Continuing the theme of repeating Ivy League opponents of the previous season, Lehigh meets Princeton, a team that thumped them this time last year. I usually don't like deviating from the pattern, but Lehigh did win the three previous meetings, and are playing at home. This one may be going out on a limb, but I'm feeling good about the League for some reason. I may regret it, but for now, let's ride the wave.

Some rumblings from the coaching rumor mills has Gillmore and Holy Cross without an OLine coach as of Sunday. I checked the HC website (http://www.goholycross.com/SportSelect.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=33100&SPID=157213&SPSID=917329) and definitely don't see anyone listed with the O-Line coach title. Gillmore has a well known and talked about temper among coaches that make most assistants never want to work for him, but to fire (what sounds to me to be) a well respected, seasoned coach three games into the season does not bode well for the Crusaders. Can Sader or anyone else up there confirm?

Likens pissed off Penske. I don't remember the whole story, but Roger was always supportive of the ME dept, but he did it by donating specifically to student groups and clubs. It was one of the reasons the university demanded taking over all student club accounts in the late 90s. Some of those clubs had money to burn from donations from alumni who the university had pissed off for one reason or another. Roger told a group of us (met him one time) that basically he would never donate to the university after what they had done. I don't know what gymnastics the newer administrations were able to perform to get him to donate the Hall of Fame money, but I do know that relationship was pretty bad.

Iacocca has given a lot to LU, but his biggest "donations" were actually a big FU to Chrysler. Once he knew that he was being canned as CEO at Chrysler, he had Chrysler buy the Bethlehem Steel research labs (now Mountaintop Campus), he then had Chrysler donate them to LU. I guess that's why when you can somebody, you limit their computer access and get them out of there as soon as possible :).

According to everyone I know who has ever or is currently working for Gillmore he is insufferable. Maybe he walked out, mostly likely it was one of those, "I quit!" "You can't quit, you're fired!" type of situations. Either way it is awfully early in the season to be without an OL coach, and it is even earlier to be that desperate and on edge as a staff. Gillmore is definitely feeling the heat.

Can't believe the O/U on that Lehigh-Princeton game. That will hit 80s if both teams like they have been. If you like offense, PU-LU is GOW.

Everyone takes your post as gospel c2... if you say GOW, it's 100% super official.

Can't disagree on history. But if Lehigh's defense has righted itself as it did in the second half at Penn (allowing only 3 first downs and ~60 yards), then we will be watching a blow out. This game will tell us if we have achieved the ability to maintain a high level of focus from week to week.

VMI @ BUCKNELL, Buffs at home even without Nitti should win, but could be ugly

COLGATE @ Richmond, Spiders read too many clippings last week and laid an egg, more focused this week at home, should be a great game

Pennsylvania @ FORDHAM, Rams just need to watch second half of last weeks game to see how to get it done

Columbia @ GEORGETOWN, Hoyas will be pressed this week but home field gives them slight advantage

Dartmouth @ HOLY CROSS, more cries for Gilmore's head coming

Villanova @ LAFAYETTE, Pards will be hard pressed to score with one dimensional O

Princeton @ LEHIGH, get some payback from last year

VMI - I just don't see the Bison pulling it out with a backup or recovering QB

Richmond - Richmond was still hungover last week from their beating UVA, they got their wakeup call, and will put Colgate in it's place

Fordham - Penn had a great gameplan going into last week, but they're just not that good.

Columbia - This is the toughest pick of them all, but I think this is where we start to see the improved coaching effect with the Lions

Dartmouth - Dartmouth is hot, and having coaching staff chaos is not a good sign for HC

Nova - Expect Nova to run the pards up and down the field

Princeton - Lehigh has played on good half and one absolutely terrible half so far this season. The rest have been sub par. 30 minutes after what I've seen the last three weeks doesn't make me a believer.

getting back on topic, I would like to pick Buffs to beat VMI, but does anyone know if Nitti will be back? Basketball yet to start so someone from Bucky must be paying some attention.

Hard to say. The Game Notes have him starting - but they also had him starting last week, when he was in a boot at game time. Suffered the injury, which appears to be a sprained ankle, in the second quarter at Duquesne. Bucknell has been hit very hard by injuries, including the following who are out:

- Nitti - 3-year starter at QB.
- CJ Williams – one of only four RB’s in PL history to make All-PL as frosh and soph; career over due to multiple concussions.
- Mark Pyles – All-PL LB missed first two weeks with mono; now back but likely not 100%.
- Connor Golden - 3-year starter at safety.
- Ben Schumacher - All-PL DT last year; serious knee injury.
- Colin Jonov - started at CB the past two years; torn ACL.
- Alex Pechin - All-PL punter as frosh; also starting PK.
- Sam Chitty - freshman who started at LB in Game One, then was injured.
- Cinjun Erskine - converted from QB to RB this year; likely would have seen carries.
- Joe Schiano - had serious foot injury last year, not sure about current injury.
- Derek Bastinck - highly regarded OL who tore ACL last year and then had more surgery this year.
- Sam Trapuzzano - frosh kicker who was All-Pennsylvania last year; might have challenged for PK role.
- Mac Atkins - junior WR.
- Ryan Riethmiller - OL who battled a very serious form of cancer for a couple of years.

That remains to be seen - but if so, it is due to a run of injuries worse than what LC had last year.

Wow, I think I should change my pick!

VMI has some legit talent (first team All-SoCon QB and WR) but the odds are against them. The Keydets have not won back-2-back games since 2005 (they won @ Morehead State before their bye last week). They have not won back-2-back ROAD games since 1981!!! They have have not won two road games in the same season since 2003. Those might be some of the craziest stats in all of college football right now......

2-3 last week, 13-5 on the year....

Lehigh 48 Princeton 30 - If Lehigh can protect the ball (unlike last year) they should go up and down the field. They had 561 yards last year in the loss. The Tigers have a very difficult offense to defend but they won't be able to keep up....

Fordham 51 Penn 38 - I don't see the Quakers slowing down Chase Edmonds and company. Penn should be able to move the ball against a real shaky Rams defense..

Dartmouth 34 Holy Cross 24 - The Big Green made a huge statement by beating UNH. Holy Cross has talent but they can't seem to do the little thing. Pujals is very talented but he does turn it over quite a bit....

Georgetown 24 Columbia 16 - I'm buying the Hoyas even though they haven't started 3-0 since 1999. They have a pretty solid set of kill guys for the first time since 2011. Their defense is generally solid.

VMI 27 Bucknell 13 - History will be made!! The Keydets win back-2-back road games for the first time since 1981! I was born in '82!!

Richmond 35 Colgate 31 - There's is going to be a great environment for FCS football. Colgate will be in it for 60 minutest but the Spiders ultimately defend their web.....

Villanova 38 Lafayette 13 - Talley pretty much owns Patriot League competition. This might be close for a half but the Wildcats will pull away at some point....

Not a lot of make or break games in week 4 but this may be it for Georgetown. A strong effort allows the Hoyas the ability to face down the tough part of its schedule with some hope, if not necessarily confidence. A loss and the Hoyas might not be within 24 points of another opponent all year.

Chessmatch developing. You can see the offenses and defenses adjusting as the game goes along, really interesting game to watch. Colgate had a couple of chances to really stretch the lead, being stopped at the 10 and settling for a FG, then doing nothing with a pick at midfield. Final

So close, and yet...

Gutsy effort from the Raiders to pull within one, but a few too many mistakes at key moments prevented the comeback. Passing game was very poor today, lots of miscommunication, drops, and poor throws. Defense did a credible job overall, the dominating 3rd quarter was the different. Big effort on special teams, including a TD off a blocked punt and a kickoff return that almost went the distance.

Hard not to be proud of how Colgate responded to the deficit, but tough to be facing a 21-point hole in the 4th quarter. Still things to clean up as the calendar turns to October, but we'll be right in the thick of the PL title race.

Lehigh's O was on all cylinders today. Didn't see stats, yet, but LU had to have had well over 500 yards. Could have scored more but, Andy does not run it up. Defense gave up some plays as Princeton tends to do some funky stuff, but the 3 INTS were great. Had decent pressure on the QBs. Pelletier is really coming into his own. Another Spadola, and this opens up opportunities for the other receivers. Dom ran very hard. Impressive YAC I bet. Really looking forward to Yale next week.

Lehigh's offense put up 621 yards today with Shafnisky going 29/36 for 464 yards, 4 TDs and 0 Ints. Pelletier had 9 catches for 190 and 1 TD, with Casey catching 6 for 148 and a TD. Bragalone rushed for 125 and a TD. Defense came up with 3 INTs which were huge. Third highest yardage day in Lehigh history. LU also had 36 min. of possession, which I think is helping the defense. Getting more rest as the O goes on very long drives. Almost had a 99 yard drive today which stalled after 75 yards and FG partially blocked. Last week drove 97 for a TD against Penn. A lot of weapons to worry about and Shafnisky is using them all right now. He was limping in second half so his running may be curtailed next week.
