Football Stadium Shared by Other Sports

This would have been a better topic a few weeks ago as an off season time killer but I was just looking at the west endzone project at Villanova and thinking about how nice it would be to have a stadium dedicated solely to football. A football only stadium is indicative of a certain level of support both from the administration and the fanbase. I quite frankly don't care about the situation for most teams at the FCS so I am going to direct these two questions to national championship winners:

At the time of your national championship, were other teams from your school using the "football" field? At nova field hockey shares it as a fall sport and m/w lacrosse as spring sports, plus occasionally the soccer teams would schedule night games and need the field for the lights.

At the time of your national championship, was there a track surrounding your field? At nova the answer is yes, and I have a ton of respect for track and field athletes plus they have won most of our national championships, but it would be nice to have the fans closer to the field.

UNH has this, and with the new stadium they did a great job of covering the track. With the new sightlines you can barely even see it.

As much as I would love a stadium specifically for football, I am also a realist and realize that UNH isn't that big of a school, and we are blessed for what we actually do have.

What I always did hate though, was how when other sports used the turf, you can still see the outlines of other lines/ goalie boxes etc..... I just always thought it made the field look really messy.

Our's used to be used for Football, Basketball, and Track. Now it is just Football and Track.

Goodman is occasionally used for a lacrosse game and the stadium was designed to be FIFA compliant for soccer. Of course, your original question of when we won our championship would take us back to Taylor Stadium which was just before my time (at least my association with Lehigh). Taylor of course had an odd arrangement where there was a baseball field out the east endzone that face into the stadium.

At the time of UR's championship, they played at old UR Stadium off campus, which was used both by the University for football, and by the Richmond Kickers for soccer in the spring and summer. There was no track.

Two years after winning the title, the Spiders moved back to campus to a multi-purpose Robins Stadium, which has a track and is used by the Men's Lacrosse team as well.

Harvard Stadium is now football-only, I believe, but it used to be the situs for soccer, track, and rugby (among others).

Yep, it's the home of FC Dallas. It's actually going to be the home of the US Soccer Hall of Fame after the renovations.

And Finely Stadium in Chattanooga is now used for soccer too, with the popular USL team Chattanooga FC. They sold the place out for the championship game

Pretty much any time, you can tune to ESPN and see the primary tenent of Providence Park, the MLS Portland Timbers playing. Portland State is only still there due to a prior agreement with the city.

2009 and earlier, very few things other than football ever in stadium (graduations and NCAA Lacosse 1984 & 86 final four; other NCAA Lacrosse in 2002). Since 2010, UD Lacrosse has played games in with the turf installed. I don't think the stadium would host soccer because the field would be at most 55-60 meters wide.

Stadium never had a track.

Jax State is football only. The women play soccer and run track elsewhere. The stadium is used for band competitions I think.

Having a multi-million dollar stadium that is only used 5-6 times a year is dumb. (not quite as dumb as all the money that is spent on Olympic venues that are used for two weeks and then abandoned, but still).

I can see complaining about having a track (running or Bristol) around the outside of the football field, as that really dimishes the proximity of the fans, but otherwise, if you can't handle other sports/events using the football stadium, and/or if a few extra markings to accomadate other sports truly bother you, you need to get over it (unless you personally donated a few million dollars towards the stadium construction)

Yeah, I was trying to keep it at athletic events. My wife walked graduation on the dome twice, I did it, my brother in law did twice.

There are very few weekends/weeks the dome isn't in use for something. It's why the dome will never go away.

Concerts, craft/boat/sports shoes, college athletic events, athletic camps, high school sporting events, JUCO bowl game, other smaller colleges playing softball there, etc... It brings in far too much money to the university and city for it to ever go away.

Fitton Field at Holy Cross is used exclusively for football. What makes this so great is that the fans are right on top of the field. If one sits in the front row, it's pretty easy to hear everything that is said on the sidelines and during timeouts.

Used to be a drum and bugle corps show there every summer. I marched on that field a few times (outside of Illinois State, that might be the only FCS field I marched on for drum corps).

I think YEA has tried to put a show at Delaware, but the football team is already using the facilities by the time the tour swings that way

Yea, I don't know what it is about the FCS level...very protective of the football stadiums for the most part. I've marched in 9 FBS stadiums and 6 NFL stadiums (most of which are gone now, actually) and quite a few DII and DIII ones, but comparatively very few FCS ones.

So much so the benches for the players are under that cement over hang. There is maybe three feet between the white stripe and the 5 foot high cement over hang.

Luckily Albany had enough room on campus to rebuild the track & field complex separately from the new football stadium. I just wish they had put a dedicated soccer field inside the track instead of using the FB field.

IIRC, there was one event back in the '80s when the brought in gobs of sand for a beach party on part of the turf. But I was drinking a lot in those days.

It is actually NPSL (tier 4, mainly amateur), not USL (tier 3, pro). Though we have beaten USL teams in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup (I say "we" because I am CFC's director of merchandising).

We have a great relationship with with Finley and the Mocs. So much so that when they installed new turf last year, they spent the extra money and installed the same stuff they have in Seattle which is a longer blade of grass that works better for soccer. They also spent an extra $100K to make it where they can take the football lines on and off the field for soccer matches).

Last year CFC and Finley set the attendance record in the United States for an amateur soccer match with 18,227. This year CFC had the best record in the NPSL which allowed them to host playoffs rounds (as long as they won). Unfortunately, they did get upset in the national semifinals, but not before hosting over 10,000 for the quarterfinals and over 12,000 for the semifinals.

The Lady Mocs soccer program also uses the stadium, along with a regional Latin America rec soccer league (every Sunday throughout the summer) and a number of higher profile local high school football games.
