Watching whatever the obscure bowl is that Nevada and Miami are playing in. The female sideline reporter talked to Nevada's coach...at hafltime I think...and just quoted him as saying that this is the biggest game in the Nevada program's history.

We're talking about a game in which they are playing a 6 - 6 team in a bowl that honestly don't know the name of. If I remember correctly, we're talking about a coach that coached Nevada in a I-AA national title game.

he probably has his job on the line and meant it's the biggest game for him in Nadada history.

I believe it is the MPC Computers game, otherwise known as the Boise Bluefield Bowl. The team that usually plays in it, Boise State, got invited to a BCS (Fiesta) bowl. Today's Oregonian said that, other than the Boise Chamber of Commerce enjoying the fact that "Miami's football team with its tradition is playing in Boise", most Boise residents have their minds in Phoenix. Nevada, the WAC runnerup, got the invite when the Broncos accepted the Fiesta. Scuttlebutt here in Portland is that, if PSU played in the WAC, they would be in Boise tonight (not my opinion but some talk here along those lines).

Yeah, it is a little depressing that a high visibility team rather than a national championship is the biggest game in school history. But in his defense, the reality is that a lot more people will sit up and take notice if he beats Miami.

I'm watching the game and am thoroughly enjoying watching Miami have to play outside, at night in Boise, Idaho!!! xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx xlolx Seems to be poetic justice with them being banished to a minor bowl in the snow belt!!!

Pretty good game too as Nevada has really played well. It would be tied right now if Nevada hadn't gone for two early in the game.

Chris Ault had to say the PC thing. It wouldn't have been prudent thing to do to remember back to those fond I-AA days. Nevada lost the 1990 I-AA title game to the Tim Stowers-coached Georgia Southern Eagles, 36-13, so maybe that is why Ault doesn't view that so fondly. Pretty sad to thing that Nevada hasn't played in a significant game since going to I-A in the early 1990s.

Why would he have his job on the line? He just took his team to a bowl game for the first time in who knows when (big accomplishment!!!!).

Man he has been there a long long time if he was the coach in their 1-AA days. I would think that if he has been there that long, he is probably in pretty good shape job security wise.

I looked him up to refresh my memory:

He was head coach at Nevada 1976 - 1992, then for some reason skipped 2003, then was back for 1994 and 1995, then they put him back in the position in 2004.

It IS a bigger game for them than the game against GSU back in the 80's. Playing Miami is big time. Playing GSU to 99% of football fans is Georgia who? Georgia what? (Not picking on GSU, you could insert UNI in here for all I care).

Take a look at Boise State right now. They made the jump. Do you think they regret doing so? Hell no!! Hmmm, let me see....play Oklahoma on National T.V. New Years Day in the Fiesta Bowl or play a FCS National Title game on December 15th Friday night on ESPN Ocho.

Boise State and Utah have proven in recent years that making the move up and competing against the nation's best can be done. If there was a sliver of an opportunity for UNI to make the jump, I'd support it, but it won't happen in the forseeable future. In the meantime, I'll root like hell for the Panthers like I always have in the division they're in.

For every Boise State there's 10 Idaho's. :eyebrow: :eyebrow:

I'll take being a big fish in a small pond any day of the week. I hope my Griz NEVER move up.

Well said. While everyone here is tripping over themselves to try and look down their collective nose at Nevada, the game story was on the front page of the SF Chronicle sports page here and probably got higher ratings than any I-AA game. Playing Miami is a huge deal. Despite their recent attendance troubles, I think Nevada is pretty clearly, along with Boise, one of the I-AA to I-A success stories. Good for them

Of course, Utah was never I-AA. Perhaps easterners didn't know because the Utes weren't in a marquee bowl until 2005.

It was good to see the BCS become more inclusive. With the addition of the BCS championship game, leaving out undefeated teams is a thing of the past.

Cedar Falls, IA is home to 'easterners'?

My bad on the Utah comment. Take out Utah and insert Nevada.

Just curious everyone, would you rather be in Boise State's position playing in a BCS Bowl on New Year's Day (taking it to the Sooners, I might add) or play in the FCS Title Game??

... playing in a BCS Bowl on New Year's Day... or play in the FCS Title Game??or is the question in Nevada's case: playing in a non-BCS bowl game or in the FCS Title Game???

I would imagine that a lot of fans from a lot of FCS schools wouldn't mind seeing their team play in a bowl game. I'm not one of them, but I do like watching the bowl games. It's obvious you don't, but there's no reason to constantly take jabs at the bowls. It's not getting much play and it's kind of childish.

And stop with the "ASU members" stuff..meh.

Is it childish for FBS fans to get all up in arms because a person doesn't like their brand of football or their bowl system and says so?

Excuse me but some "ASU members" of AGS said they would rather take a bowl game than the champ game, and this was after App St won last year. I didn't read any other AGS members write that and it is pertinent to what is being discussed. Nothing personal with you.
