Well with one FBS upset down and a couple to go, here's where the current standings sit. I didn't really plan on doing it like this, but wth why not, it'll be fun. I doubt there will be a trophy for the winner, but you get bragging rights I spose.

For my picks

Minnesota

I was tempted to take Indy St here with Minnesota coming off of a close emotional win, but I don't have enough confidence in their new QB yet to do it. I would LOVE to be proven wrong here.

WVU

Hopefully YSU keeps it close. From what I've gathered it seems the starter for WVU is hurt, so I definitely think that the Penguins have a shot if they play well.

USD

One of the many Big Sky/MVFC showdowns here. It's at USD, so I think they take it. There should be a decent crowd and some excitement after the flashes they showed against New Mexico.

NDSU

I think this one will be closer than people expect that are Valley fans. I'm not 100% sold on NDSU right now. Add their new corners in the mix, it could spell big trouble in Fargo. If EWU had their green o line hold up enough to put up damn near 50 against a FBS school, they shouldn't be atrocious. Will be a fun one to watch.

Northwestern

I think they win by a lot. ISUr put up the type of results I expected with what they had to replace in the first half, and needing to use their depth to wear down Valpo. Northwestern is going to come out PISSED after last weeks upset. Worst recipe for a possible FCS upset is for the FBS team to get embarrassed the week prior to the matchup.

WIU

I think that WIU is going to run all over the NAU defense, par the course for Big sKy/MVFC match ups. That and with how big of a PITA it is to travel to WIU (to SDSUs undoing last year), and the time difference, it will be too much for the Lumberjacks.

UNI

UNI has the pass rush and run game to hold down the Montana offense. I doubt it will be what happened in the playoffs between the Griz and Bison last year, but I think HNI controls the tempo of the game and wins by two scores in the end.

SIU

Please don't lose to a OVC team. Please.

SDSU

This won't be close. This isn't nice. It's the opening game at our SHINY NEW STADIUM!!!! DID WE TELL YOU WE GOT A SHINY NEW STADIUM AT SDSU? DID WE TELL YOU ITS ****ING AWESOME?!?!? DID YOU KNOW THAT? WE HAVE PICTURES! AND VIDEO! LOTS OF THEM! IM NOT JOKING! LET ME SHOW YOU :D
But seriously, with that and a sell out crowd (it will be, keep your shorts on bison fans), and frustration of feeling like they let one get away from them last week, SDSU pulls starters by third quarter. I mean Drake lost to something called Quincy last week at Drake. Yikes.

MSU

I have faith that Misery State is improved enough to take out an OVC school, even if it is on the road. Go Bears! For the Valley!

As for what I think about the games:

ISUb @ Minnesota - The Gophers are halfway decent for a B10 team, Sycamores probably having a down year, I don't think ISUb keeps with them past the 1st quarter.

YSU @ West Virginia - The Mountaineers have a solid win over Mizzou and are just a bit outside the FBS Top 25. The Penguins are pretty good this year, but they're no SDSU...I don't think they can hang with an FBS team at that level...not for all 4 quarters anyway.

EWU @ NDSU - This one seems like it could be pretty close. Eagles looked really strong against Washington State, and the Bison looked somewhat "meh" against Charleston Southern. I think this brings them a lot closer together on ability than some might initially have thought. Still, it's in the "Thunderdome" (Thundar-dome?) which always gives NDSU a bit of an advantage. I think NDSU gets the home advantage and the edge in a close game...and a bit if revenge.

ISUr @ Northwestern - Northwestern doesn't appear to be very good this year (lost at home to MAC Western Michigan), but I think ISUr might be a bit down also. ISUr in '14 or '15 could have a very good chance against this year's Wildcats, but until I've seen that they can succeed against good teams without Roberson and Coprich, I can't pick them to upset a Big 10 team.

NAU @ WIU - I've got what seems to be a masters thesis about our game with NAU on our own forum (http://www.leathernecknation.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1089) for anyone who's interested. And if you're not, here's my prediction: our DL and LB are able to get decent pressure on Cookus and we disrupt a good number of his throws (I don't trust our DBs to be able to defend against NAU's passing offense yet), but he does connect with some...our QB gets a little better at his passes and the NAU defense (like EIU's last weekend) has no answer for our RBs. We win it by 10, but in a fairly high scoring game...something like 40-30ish.

Montana @ UNI - Grizzlies struggled to defeat the NEC's St. Francis at home...Panthers struggled to defeat the Big 12's Iowa State in Ames. Unless UNI has some crazy huge letdown, I don't see it being close.

SEMO @ SIU - The Redhawks are somewhere in the lower middle of the Ohio Valley and got beat fairly solidly by Memphis, Salukis are probably middle of the Missouri Valley and had a very strong outing against Florida Atlantic. In this rivalry game (they've met 82 times and the schools are 33 miles apart...45 miles driving distance), SEMO has a 2-game advantage overall, but I think SIU narrows that to 1 game, winning their home opener in Carbondale.

Drake @ SDSU - Oh god is this going to be ugly. Drake just lost...at home...to DII "Powerhouse" Quincy who went 3-7 last season in the GLVC (Quincy is kinda our "local" DII team, just FYI). SDSU will be playing angry after letting a possible upset of a very highly FBS ranked TCU team slip away in the 4th quarter...plus they're opening their brand new stadium. It'll be a bloodbath. I think the SDSU crowd is going to be so pumped for this game that they could probably just pull a handful of guys out of the student section, give 'em pads and put them on the field...and still win. Back in '02, we (Western) beat Drake 64-7. If it weren't for Coach Stieg being such a decent and honorable guy, I think it would be even worse than that. Not even going to try to predict a score or margin...the score is just going to be whenever Stiegelmeier decides to call off the dogs and just run every play (plus another 10-14) to....idk....maybe 3.

MSU @ Murray State - I think this is the Bears best chance for an FCS win this season (according to Massey's predictions, this one at 46% chance of winning and their SIU game at 16% chance are the only double-digit chances of winning for them this season). I'm rooting for Missouri State to finally get over that "hump" and get their first FCS win since October 2014...I think it'll be close, but MSU wins by a FG.

Indiana State @ Minnesota - I'd love to see the Trees pull this one off and I think the Goofers will dink around for a while as they are wont to do but they'll win handily.

Youngstown St @ West Virginia - This one is going to make the Mountaineers sweat. I'm buying YSU this year just not quite enough to pull off the big upset.

Weber St @ South Dakota - Don't know much about what Weber St returns this year but I think USD is tough enough inside their dome to pull it off.

Eastern Washington @ North Dakota St - A lot of points will be scored in this game but I think it'll come down to a key mistake or two made by the EWU offense and/or play made by the NDSU defense that gets the Bison a two score win.

Illinois St @ Northwestern - Dangerous game for Northwestern... I think last year's Redbird squad wins this game against the in-state FBS power but not this year's squad.

Northern Arizona @ Western Illinois - I think the Big Sky has to get at least one win this weekend against the MVFC so I'll pick this one. NAU's QB is really really good, better than any passer in the MVFC and I think WIU will find that out.

Montana @ Northern Iowa - UNI's secondary may still be vulnerable but I think their front 7 will wreak havoc and throw off Montana's offense well enough for the Panthers to control this game from start to finish.

SE Missouri St @ Southern Illinois - SIU wins as long as they don't turn it over 7 times to SEMO.... again.

Drake @ South Dakota St - By pretty much infinity. Weineke has 150 yards and 3 scores by halftime.

Missouri St @ Murray St - Not going to pick the Bears against a D1 team until they show me they're not going to be historically bad again.

I most likely didn't explain myself well enough. When ST did his picks his pick wasn't listed in an obvious manner and you had to read the paragraph and hope he had a line that said I think X takes this one or I think team Y loses by 3 scores. My picks were separate from my analysis, and easy to see, just like how I called you two peckerheads above so you didn't have to hunt through this paragraph to get my main point. Honestly, the only reason I wrote my first set of picks like that is because I didn't realize we were actually doing a "scored" pick-em competition of some kind. I just figured we were all just tossing out our opinions on the games, discussing things some, and that'd be it. Once I realized that Thumper was compiling picks and calculating "winners", I realized how much easier it would be to do that if you make it clear who you're picking to win (I've been there, done that before).

It's like Ursus's GOTW threads. There's too many people nominating and voting to dig through every post and look for people saying "oh, well I think that probably the Eagles and Bison game is the biggest one this week" or "I'm rooting for El Cid this week...I think that's the biggest game". You gotta say "I nominate..." or "I second..." so he can quickly and efficiently total up all the votes and put together the poll for the week.

He wasn't really "calling me out"...he was really saying "dude, if you make things clearer, it would make my job a lot easier". And I got no problem with that.
