They are grossly underrated IMO

They lost? When you're a non-playoff team, previously unranked and a relative unknown nationally, what do you expect?
If they want to be ranked, they might want to actually win some games to get the momentum going?

They barely lost to another ranked team. Previously unranked means nothing. That was the FCS game of the week and it was an easy game to watch on Thursday night.

That is all true and they're on my radar going into this week. I just believe at a certain point, you have to win. I will have a hard time moving a team up in rank after a loss, no matter how "good" that loss looks.
I'm still learning I guess.

Later in the season I think virtually everyone would agree with that. But at this point there's so little to go on that I think lots of voters will look at "good" losses to try to see what they can tell them about the team. Really, there's room for widely varying opinions at this point.

This is accurate. Either Mercer is impressive and should be by The Citadel or The Citadel shouldn't be ranked.

Yes, if a team is 1-4 the "they need to start beating someone" applies. The first few weeks, with nothing else to really go on other than how the team's looked and preseason expectations there is no way (at least in my eyes) Mercer isn't a 15-20 team, especially if what we believe about Cit is true.

In 2 weeks maybe that is the case. It's why I hate slot voting. It doesn't allow for Mercer to move as they should. It is what kept Montana slightly higher than they should be, end though they won, and St Francis further out of the poll than they should be.

For some reason I thought we were evaluating the best 25 teams of 2016.

*thumbsup*

Reputation is an important factor, whether we admit it or not. There is the fluke factor as well. Mercer and The Citadel are in the same conference/same level; and an upset or a close game is just as likely as a blowout.

Here is Bison Media Blog poster Dom Izzo's top 25 poll. He has somethings that we will disagree with but he at least posts his poll unlike a lot of other posters.

Wow, he dropped SDSU 5 spots after that performance?!?! Apparently wins vs **** teams are more impressive?

I don't see why anyone could drop SDSU 5 slots. They took #13 TCU into the 4th QTR still with a solid chance of winning. The difference between TCU and most the FBS teams that fell to FCS opponents that week is as wide as NDSU and a middling MEAC or Pioneer team.

But as we all know, Week 1 polls are highly subjective and mean very little.

I've seen worse (HINT: Any poll where a MEAC or SWAC team is rated or the "Coaches Poll")

The funny thing was that he said he didn't drop teams for FBS losses but SDSU goes from 7 to 12. Apparently wins by James Madison, Chattanooga and Illinois State are more impressive.

Yet, if you watched the Illinois State game they were less than impressive.

Yes, the score was lopsided but it was just 14-3 halfway through the second quarter, and 7-3 in offensive points.

Kolbe, who the offensive production really rides on, went just 11-19 for 166 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.

I don't know what to make of the game. Sure, Valpo didn't have any yards (something like 130 total) but it's freaking Valpo. Valpo has 9 total wins since 2008

I don't know what to truly make of them off of that game.

Next week they play Northwestern. That should be a true litmus test for the Redbirds. Vegas has that game at -11. If Illinois State keeps the game under 8 I'll give them the respect they probably feel they deserve. 8-14 or so and I'll still hold off true judgment until conference play. Anything worse than 17 and I'm completely off the ISUr wagon for a while.

Must have been that 662 (!) yards the Rabbits gave up. Still, agree, not much of a reason to drop them too far, although I think they were rated too high to begin with. They'll recover against Drake at home no problem. Will be interesting the next few weeks for them after that with Cal Poly and Western Illinois on the docket, although they get them both at home also, and then Southern Illinois after that. So 4-1 heading to NDSU seems realistic.
