PHILADELPHIA – One day after being released by the New England Patriots, former Eastern Illinois linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill found a new home in the National Football League as he was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles to their 53-man roster.* The Eagles will open their season on Sunday hosting the Cleveland Browns on CBS.*Grugier-Hill was a sixth round draft pick by the Patriots in this year's NFL Draft.* He was battling to make the roster as a special teams player and reserve linebacker.* During the preseason Grugier-Hill made eight tackles but did miss one game due to illness.* As of Sunday evening he was listed as the back-up outside linebacker for the Eagles behind Mychal Kendricks.*Grugier-Hill will be one of two former Panthers on active rosters when the NFL season opens this week.** Former EIU signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo will start the first four games of the NFL season for the Patriots.** Garoppolo is in his third season after being selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.* New England opens the season on Sunday evening at Arizona on NBC.*Eastern Illinois could have been the only school in the nation to feature two NFL starting quarterbacks on opening night, however veteran Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was hurt during the preseason and will miss a portion of the year.* The Cowboys host the New York Giants on Sunday.*EIU is the only football program in the country to feature an NFL starting quarterback, NFL head coach and NFL General Manager as alumni of their program.*The New Orleans Saints coached by EIU alumnus Sean Payton will open the 2016 season hosting the Oakland Raiders on Sunday afternoon.*Ryan Pace, EIU alumnus and general manager of the Chicago Bears, will open the 2016 campaign on Sunday visiting the Houston Texans.
