Nice start for the SoCon.
WCU let it get away from them at ECU a bit (52-7), but nothing to be ashamed about. VMI at Akron was about what was expected. Furman had a good showing at a nationally ranked P5.
UTC and Samford both proved pretty much nothing with their lopsided wins, but did what they were supposed to do in that situation, which was to make sure to put their foot down on a lower level team right out of the gate and put them away by halftime.
Wofford traveled to TTU in a game that might have been a question mark in not really knowing what to expect (especially with the Terriers losing their QB1) and came away with a convincing road win. Even more impressive considering that terrible circumstance that happened on the sidelines.
Mercer and The Citadel opened the season with a classic SoCon matchup. It is really too bad that had to be game 1 of the season, it would have gotten a lot more attention later in the year.
But hats off to ETSU, they get the SoCon game ball for the week. Almost no one, including most ETSU fans (and odds makers who had it pegged as a blowout), thought they would go down and get the win at KSU, particularly with the loss that was handed to them by the Owls last season.

ETSU is definitely team of the week. Nobody, except them, expected that. Kudos to the gang from Johnson City. Maybe the ECU loss will temper some of our expectations this season. I keep forgetting that WCU still has a ways to go. Yes our talent has improved but in many ways we're still learning how to win consistently. Have no doubts that Coach Speir will be all over the defense in practice this week.
GO CATS!
