PORTLAND — At least Central Washington made Portland State sweat.

The Wildcats led the nationally-ranked and highly-touted Vikings through three quarters Saturday at Providence Park before PSU’s superior depth and firepower produced a 43-26 victory in the nonconference season opener for both teams.

The Vikings formidable ground game, however, became dominant over the final 15 minutes. PSU, ranked 12th in the Football Championship Subdivision, rolled up 93 of its 286 total rushing yards in the fourth period en route to scoring the game’s final 22 points.

Viking quarterback Alex Kuresa, who led his team to a 9-3 record last year and a second-place tie in the Big Sky Conference, was as good as advertised.

He completed 16 of 26 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns, and also ran 18 times for 123 yards and another score.
