Quarterfinals finished for the day left the Mountain Hawks in 7th place in a tightly bunched grouping faring much better than last year's debacle in the opening day. National power Minnesota is currently first leading Edinboro by 6 points. Summary from the Lehigh website:
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Lehigh placed five wrestlers into the quarterfinals and has one more alive in the consolations as the Mountain Hawks sit in seventh place after day one at the fourth annual Southern Scuffle, following a long 10 hour session of wrestling Friday at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. The lightweights led the way for the Brown and white as Lehigh’s starters at 125, 133 and 141 each survived the first day of the two day event unscathed.
“Things went a lot better than they did the first day last year,” said head coach Greg Strobel. “A lot of things went as expected but some didn’t, and overall the guys fought well against some pretty good teams.”
Sophomore Matt Fisk did well to bounce back from his preseason injury, winning three matches, including a win by fall at 125 to reach the quarterfinals, where he will meet No. 2 seed Tanner Gardner of Stanford.
At 133, freshman Seth Ciasulli was equally impressive, picking up wins by decision over Garrett Cummings of NC State and Josh Keefe of Chattanooga. He will meet second seed Evan Sola of North Carolina in the quarters.
Senior Matt Ciasulli joined his brother in the quarterfinals with three bonus wins in three bouts at 141. He opened with a technical fall over Phil Wightman of Duke, then pinned Jim Avola of Davidson before scoring an 11-3 major decision over Cam Watkins of Old Dominion. Next up for Ciasulli is top seed Manuel Rivera of Minnesota.
Lehigh’s fourth quarterfinalist is freshman David Craig, who picked up wins by decision and fall to reach the final eight at 184. Like Matt Ciasulli, Craig will have to contend with a top seeded Golden Gopher when he faces Roger Kish on Saturday.
Senior Paul Weibel rounds out the quarterfinalists, after winning his opening match by decision and then winning by injury default in the round of 16 at heavyweight. Weibel will next meet Edinboro’s Joe Fendone in a rematch from earlier this season.
In the consolation bracket, sophomore Kevin Vinh is still alive at 133. Vinh won his opening bout, lost in the round of 32, but then rebounded with three straight wins to stay alive in the wrestle backs.
Of Lehigh’s 13 attached competitors, 12 won at least one match on the day. Seniors Dave Nakasone, David Helfrich and Matt Cassidy each reached the round of 16 before losing two straight matches to get knocked out.
Sophomore Trevor Chinn was upset in the round of 32, but did win three of his five matches before bowing out. Freshman Manuel Schubert picked up a win in the consolations, while Eddy Silverman dropped both of his bouts.
Freshmen Nate Spangler and Greg Hilbert each competed unattached, but were eliminated after losing their first two matches.
The team race remains close, with Lehigh currently half a point behind Navy and half a point ahead of Kent State. Two time defending champion Minnesota leads Edinboro by six points, with Cornell, Missouri and Cal-State Bakersfield rounding out the top five.
Action at the Southern Scuffle continues Saturday with the Quarterfinals, which get underway at 9:00 am. The Championship finals will take place Saturday night at 6:30 pm from the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.
