Abilene Christian got a jump on the season by playing 2 exhibition games in Canada with wins over Queens and Carleton universities.
All 11 healthy members of the Wildcat roster got a lot of playing time. Looks like ACU found two freshmen point guards, a transfer forward and a freshman center who will help out a lot this fall. The reigning SLC champion Wildcats return 4 starters from last year's team, although Sr.forward Lizzy Dimba is still rehabbing a late season ACL tear and may not be ready for the start of the season, set to begin against the Missouri Tigers in the pre-season NIT.
ACU won't complete the transition to D1 until 2017 and once again won't be eligible for the NCAA tournament. The Cats will be playing for a return to the post season NIT.

We aren't eligible for NCAA playoffs or the conference tournament while we are in transition. We are eligible for the regular season conference championship since the regular season standings don't determine who the conference rep will be in the NCAA tourney. That honor goes to the conference tournament champion.
The WNIT is not associated with the NCAA, so we are eligible to play in both the pre and post season NIT tournaments. It's a pretty decent consolation prize. Most other sports don't have any sort of post season play to look toward while in transition.

Wofford finally has a new women's basketball coach, a guy that was extrememly successful at the D2 level. Supposedly he's the guy that's going to bring the program up from the bottom of the SoCon where they've resided pretty much since they joined the conference in 1997. I'd love to believe, but years of losing gives one doubts. So I won't believe it until I see it. Wofford has just not been a place girls go to play sports...girls that go to Wofford have been much more interested in joining sororities then drinking until they puke on weekends (and some weekdays too) and having sex with fraternity guys...

ACU could be better overall than last year but wind up winning fewer games base on SOS. We play three OOC games against SEC and B12 schools that advanced to the second round of the NCAA or beyond. Games against preseason #19 Mizzou and TAMU will be on the SEC Network and the game vs #5 Baylor game will be on Fox Sports.

Ober came from Glencoe-Silver Lake, less than 30 miles east of me. Jacks have pulled quite a few good players from rural MN.

Hey Cat...how would it feel to your fans if your football team had the best record in the conference but due to transition wasn't allowed the title BUT your basketball team, also in transition, did the same but was given the title?
By the way, congrats on the preseason pick for conference title...you guys have one heck of a team!

I can only wish we were in that position but our football team is long. long way from the best record. If it were to happen though, it would be frustrating even though we knew the rules coming in. We aren't eligible for any conference title that qualifies for the NCAA. The football conference champ is the Southland AQ for the playoffs. In basketball, the AQ berth goes to the post season tournament champ. So we aren't eligible in one sport but we are in another.
Bunch of seniors on our WBB team. I hope they have a lot of success this year, enough to make it back to the post season NIT. Next year we rebuild and probably won't make it to the NCAA although we will be eligible. Finally.
Meanwhile, the Bears may make the playoffs in both football and wbb this year. Things are looking up in Conway.

Very much in keeping with Harvard's geographically diverse student body. Harvard has huge advantages over South Dakota State in recruiting, starting with an elite national brand and a great location. SDSU is neither academically elite nor in a desirable location, which makes their success all the more surprising.

Not sure what has happened with this team, but they have underachieved so far from the preseason expectations. Yes, it is a very tough schedule, but there were some games where we just weren't competitive at all. Some close losses too, even one vs a ranked team. Offense is a problem. Defense hasn't shown up for some games. Most were expecting 8-4 at this point. We returned 4 starters after going 24-8 last season. There is a feeling of confusion of why this drop off has happened with only losing 1 player. They need to figure out the problem and fix it before SoCon play starts. 2 non-conference games left, at Presbyterian and vs #2 Notre Dame.

When I was coaching basketball the referees would check the game ball before each contest. One game he was checking and told me that it was underinflated. I went with one to the equipment room where the ball pump was, put a couple of pounds in and handed it back. He checked it again and said it was fine.
I don't know the whole story here, even after reading it. But the officials should have been checking it. I can't understand why they would have to reverse the outcome of two games.

Here we go! For all the marbles so far!
ACU has a ONE game lead on UCA for the conference title.
UCA has an easy schedule the rest of the year.
ACU has a medium difficult schedule the rest of the year.
ACU is likely to lose ONE more after the UCA game tonight.
UCA can win the rest.
Tonight ACU travels to UCA.
If ACU wins...essentially the season is theirs to win the title.
If UCA wins, the the likely remaining schedule should either give UCA a tie for the regular season title OR win it outright.
HUGE game tonight and yes anything can happen because there are games left to play...but a win tonight will be very helpful to UCA winning the women's title. Last year ACU beat UCA by ONE game to win it...UCA got the conference post season tournament title and the NCAA bid...but lost out on the regular season title....we want that!

ACU gets 19 free throws to UCAs 3 in the first half. Pathetic officiating.
Right before the game ended ACU had 37 free throws to UCA's 9. WTF????
UCA won by 10 but not only did they have to battle an amazing ACU team but they had to battle the officials. Something has to be done about the lopsided calls in these games I've seen. Not just the UCA ones, but other teams I've watched on ASN or ESPN3.

UCA women win again. Up one point by 34. Didn't allow SLU a field goal in the second quarter. Took the starters out second half and rotated them in sparingly. Final score was closer than coach liked but the game was never in doubt. Never heard a radio guy bang his head on the table like Steve O of UCA did last night hoping the game would end quicker.
WTF happened to SLU women's team? He said they have 9 players. 3 were in foul trouble in the third quarter last night. Did they get some kind of sanction or something? It reminded me of UCAs transition years to D1 when the bench wasn't full. They've been D1 for a while.

ACU is right there nipping at UCA's heels. We are all Jax fans this weekend. The Wildcats have not been as strong this year as I had hoped with 4 returning starters. Meanwhile UCA is on the verge of taking the title away from us this year. If you win the regular season, Wildcats will be your biggest fans in the SLC tournament. If you lose, you don't go to the NCAA and the post season Women's NIT takes you...you win and ACU is in line for the NIT bid, assuming we win out. So, Go Jax. And if that doesn't work out, GO Bears in the tournament.

I never really understood her, or their former Men's coach prior to Billups taking over. They did not seem to recruit the Colorado Front Range very well. A ton of D1 talent has left for schools outside the area. They can't compete with CU or CSU but they should be able to compete with Wyoming and UNC and other western schools, especially in Women's BB where the Colorado Front Range is notorious for having a boat load of talent.
I know the academic requirements are tough but they just did not recruit Colorado well. I expect Billups to change their men's program, quickly by bringing in some serious athletes. Whoever they pickup on the Women's side needs to be from the area. There is no reason DU cannot be a strong BB program, Men's and Women's.

Abilene Christian tied Central Arkansas for the Southland regular season title and split home-away games with the Sugar Bears. Alas, no opporutinity for a rubber match. ACU was ineligible for the conference tournament since we are still in transition from D2 to D1. But the Sugar Bears were on a roll at the end of the season and will be a fine representative of the SLC in the NCAA
Meanwhile, ACU goes to the Women's NIT for the second consecutive year. Not a bad consolation prize.
ACU will be eligible next year but after loses 4 three year starters, so probably won't be as strong. We will be lucky to go anywhere in the post season.

Apparently the WNIT hasn't been any kinder to the SLC than the NCAA's. As far as I can tell no team from the SLC has made it past the first round of the WNIT since they adopted the present format back in 2010.

I used to work basketball camp for Jane Albright at UW. At the time the Badgers were good- and the Gophers were bottom feeders. Then Lindsey Whalen came along and the Gophers went to the Final Four. Now the Gophers aren't very good and the Badgers are worse. It goes in cycles- it certainly can't be blamed on the venue since the Badger men and women play in the same great arena.

They absolutely should have been in. RPI in the 30s. Played an SOS of 83. Were 22-8. What hurt them was finishing 3-3 over their last 6. I'd argue SDSU's resume is probably more deserving than UNI's...? The beat UNI head to head in December (granted, it was after that loss that UNI went 20-4 or something like that to close the season) including 2 wins over top 25 teams and over that same time SDSU went 17-7, but they also beat one of the top 25 teams UNI beat (Creighton). UNI was one of the last 4 in. I haven't looked (or if it's even released) but I'd have to believe SDSU was one of the first 4 out, which sucks, because the womens tournament has 4 less at large bids than the men.
They also did that in the 11th rated womens conference. The Missouri Valley is 17th in WBB. The Summit is legit for WBB. 4 teams in the top 77 of the RPI, all of them with at least 20 wins.

RPI is very hit and miss. It matters when they want it to matter, and doesn't when they don't. Missouri State was left out of the NCAA tournament twice in the late 00s with RPIs in the low 20s.
RPI is a strange mix of really good, and really bad. I go back and forth, a lot, on if I like it. It's so easy to manipulate, especially for power conference, that when you see MMs with high RPI's like ISUr's get left out it lets you know what the committee is thinking.
Supposedly the committee is going away from using RPI, to some other metric, but that will chance to fit their whims at any given time. Some years road wins is most important. Some years it's SOS. Some years it's RPI. Some years is Top 25 wins. Some years it's top 50 wins. Some years it's who you lost too. The criteria is always whatever fits the bias that the committee wants to force that year.

If your team is a 16 seed...the success of a 16 seed over a 1 seed.... 0 for 138 according to espn last night.
Not for the women. Harvard beat Stanford in 1998. It is the only time that a #1, 2 or 3 seed has lost in the first round for the women.

Oh...I wonder what they were referencing with such a specific number then. Hmm...I'll have to research if that was guys or girls.
Edit: It was men's according to USA Today Sports..Last year they had 0 for 124. That would make this year 0 for 128 not 138...wonder why they brought that up during the women's selection show. I'll see if I can dig up that clip. Maybe it was just a reference for probability for both mens and womens.

WNIT. ACU beats Oklahoma State 66-56. Next round opponent the winner of the SMU-LA Tech game.
This is a homecoming of sorts for ACU coach Julie Goodenough. She coached the OSU Cowgirls 15 years ago but was fired for not winning enough games. Coming back and picking up a W over her former team would be especially sweet for her.

That's why upsets are less common in the wbb tourney. SDSU had to play Standford at Stanford last year. I doubt they lose if it was a neutral site.

I would be 100% on board with it rotating between Fargo and Sioux Falls with the addition of UND. Unfortunately Fargo has a bigger hard on for a home show than hosting the SLT. Anywhere else has proven to be poor at hosting the event and horrible at showing up to the games.

The SHAC wouldn't be allowed due to it being NDSUs home court, it would have to be at the Fargodome. My biggest gripe is the days it's on. Wish it would have the championship game on Sunday and start Thursday. It's much easier for people to take off Thursday-Friday instead of Monday-Tuesday. But that's a TV issue I'm pretty sure. If it was set up like that I think you would see better turn outs from teams like NDSU, UND, and UNO. Realistically Sioux Falls is by far the best location to be close to a bunch of fanbases in the conference with Usd and SDSU an hour away, UNO two hours away, NDSU three hours, and UND four. Those are also four of the teams with the best fanbases. I was impressed with how many fans from Omaha showed up for the championship.

The ACU women's basketball team lost a 7 point decision to SMU last night in the second round of the NIT. SMU had a couple of really tall girls inside so we decided to focus on shots from three point range. We went an abysmal 1-19 in the first half. After digging a 26 point hole, we did manage to fight back in the fourth quarter but 26 points was too much of a deficit to overcome. With that, all SLC women's teams are out of post season play.....

I grew up during the John Wooden dynasty with UCLA. I watched the regionals to see who would go to the Final Four. I rarely got to see the Final Four because they were shown during the Minnesota State HS tournament, which only had one class back then and had the attention of the entire state. It wasn't until they changed to the Saturday/Monday format that I got to see it- and I was so happy when NC State with David Thompson won it all in 1974. I think that college basketball really took off after it became more competitive. UCONN's dominance has resulted in general lack of interest in women's basketball. They really are great but it has become the same old same old.
Who will beat them this year? Only a couple of teams have a chance. And not a big one.

Quite an accomplishment by UConn to win 111 in a row. I thought that they would win after the intentional foul call that tied it up and gave them the ball.
At least neither team has won a title before- always nice to have someone new win.

Here is a little education for you Bro...
Dating back to 1765, the South Carolina State Flag reminds us of its role in the American Revolution and maintains its place in the annals of the Civil War with a design that was formulated as a national banner when the state seceded from the union on December 20, 1860.
Components of the current state flag were first seen in 1765, on a banner carried by South Carolina protesters of the Stamp Act. The banner that the protesters hoisted displayed three white crescents on a blue background. Ten years later in 1775, Colonel William Moultrie was asked by the South Carolina Revolutionary Council of Safety to design a banner for the use of South Carolina State Troops. Colonel Moultrie chose a simple and direct design that displayed the crescent (new moon) on a blue field. The new flag was the same blue color of the soldier's uniforms and the silver crescent echoed the symbol that the soldiers wore on the front of their caps.
Almost 100 years later, South Carolina seceded from the Union it had fought to create. A new banner was needed to fly above the newly-created nation. Many designs were reviewed but the General Assembly settled on one simple change to Moultrie's Revolutionary War design. A Palmetto tree was added and centered on the blue field. The Palmetto, the South Carolina State Tree, had been attributed as instrumental in Colonel Moultrie's defense of Sullivan's Island against an attack by British warships in June of 1776. Cannonballs fired at the fort from the British ships could not destroy the walls of the fort which were built of Palmetto logs. Instead, the cannonballs simply sank into the soft, tough Palmetto wood.
The flag that flies over the state of South Carolina today is of the same design that flew over the independent South Carolina during the Civil War.
