Everybody else is getting started early, so let's do it. Though thanks to the NDSU game we are starting later in relation to when our first game is.

Friday 8/27

Charelston Southern@North Dakota State- 6:30 pm ESPN

Thursday 9/1

Southwestern (Kan.)@Missiouri State- 6:00 pm ESPN3

Western Illinois @Eastern Illinois- 6:00 pm OVC Network

Northern Iowa @Iowa State- 7:00 pm CycloneTV

So I'll go

NDSU by 14- late TD by CSU makes it look closer than it was

MSU by 10- they have to be better than last year by a little, right?

WIU by 7- it's the OVC in OOC, so this should happen

YSU by 21- fighting Pelinis come out angry

New Mexico by 17- too much to win the first game with a new coach vs a FBS squad

ISUb by 14- even without their former starting QB

FAU by 10- I have no idea on the spread, don't know a lot about FAU but I don't have huge faith in SIU this year.

ISUr by 21- Pioneer league team, should be a route

TCU by 21- hopefully I'm wrong, would like it to be a good game for the first three quarters. We'll see.

UNI by 3- UNI gets the first FBS scalp for the MVFC

MSU by less than 7....remember their D2 game was 7 points last season

WIU by 13

YSU by 17

New Mexico by 23

ISUb by 31

SIU by 3

ISUr by 35+...builds up all kinds of hope that ISUr didn't fall off...only for them to fall off

TCU by many

UNI by 10.....Iowa State lost their only lineman with ANY game experience to injury this week. 5 brand new offensive lineman, new coaching staff, 3rd offensive system in 2 years....

Valparaiso @Illinois State- 6:00 pm ESPN3
Redbirds by a lot....I mean A LOT a lot. Starters are out by halftime, 4th quarter the redbirds are putting in local HS JV players. ISU by 56.

South Dakota State @TCU- 7:00 pm FSN
SDSU is good for an FCS team, no doubt, but TCU is good for an FBS team. I'd love to see a big-time upset, but I don't think that's likely. TCU by 27.

Northern Iowa @Iowa State- 7:00 pm CycloneTV
This is probably the best bet for a MVFC over FBS upset in the first week. UNI has their best team in quite a while, ISUy is struggling (we already have an ISUr, so Cyclones get to be ISUyellow...ISUy). I think UNI pulls out a close 3 point win.

Good job
I was just every so slightly generous in my numbers

Taking sacks out this was UNI vs the Big Sky rushing last year

EWU:
45 rushes
283 yards
6.3 YPC
1 TD

Cal Poly:
42 rushes
215 yards
5.12 YPC
4 TD

PSU:
53 rushes
415 yards
9.66 YPC
4 TD

Total
140 rushes
913 yards
6.52 YPC
9 TD

Avg
46.66 rushes
304.33 yards
6.52 YPC
3 TD

Meanwhile in MVFC games
372 rushes (46.5 per game)
1,826 yards (228.2 per game)
4.9 YPC
21 TD (2.6 per game)

Safe to say, running in the Big Sky would make life much...much...easier.

Thankfully UNI didn't have to run against UNI's run defense. They gave up, in confence play (against backs like Marshaun Coprich, King Fraizer, Daquan Isom, Mark Iannotti, Brady Mangerelli, etc...)
289 rushes (37 per game)
877 yards (109.6 per game)
3.0 YPC
6 TD (0.75 per game)

For reference, that is over 200 yards less total than NDSU gave up in the conference season....30 yards per game less. Half the TD's NDSU gave up and 1.3 less yards per carry....

For YSU here's the break down since 05...why 05? even cut off for CFBDatawarehouse...lol

I split it Aug/Sept, first half of Oct and then the rest of the season since 05. Why 05? CFBDatawarehouse splits made it easy.

Aug/Sept
1st half Oct
Rest of season

2005
3-1
3-0
2-2

2006
4-1
2-0
3-1

2007
4-1
1-1
2-2

2008
2-2
0-3
2-3

2009
3-1
1-1
2-3

2010
3-1
0-2
0-4

2011
2-2
2-1
3-2

2012
4-0
0-2
3-2

2013
5-1
2-0
1-3

2014
3-1
2-1
2-3

2015
3-1
0-3
2-2

36-12
13-14
22-27

So we see YSU go:
-75% for OOC and first week of MVFC play *every single loss in years there is only 1 loss during that time is an FBS loss. 07 and 2011 involved losses to ranked MVFC teams
-48% for the first part of October
44% for the last quarter of the season

I didn't say YSU would lose. Rather this was an intriguing match-up (when there's not too many) of two potential playoff teams. Duquesne played really well against W&M last year. The Dukes talent level is legitimately good. They did lose quite a bit so inexperience could be a pitfall.

Streaks only run so long. At some point the odds will catch up with the Penguins in an early season FCS game. I just have no idea what to expect from a Bo Pelini coached team. He could lose his ***** again at any moment....

FAU is bad...so is SIU though.

If Iannotti was back I'd have zero doubt SIU wins. Speak about transfers all you want at the QB position, that defense isn't fixed and the only QB on SIU's roster that has taken a D1 snap is Matt DeSormer who spent more time at wide receiver and running back last season as he had 23 rushes, 10 receptions and just 3 pass attempts. The best option, that I can see, is a D2 transfer, Josh Straughan. In three seasons at Stillman College he completed 468 passes, for 5,470 yards and 53 touchdowns.

If a D2 transfer is the best option I lose some faith. I think SIU still pulls it out, but only about 51% faith.

Charleston Southern @ North Dakota State - This might be tight early but I think the Bison wear them out by the 2nd half and win by double digits.

Southwestern (Kan.) @ Missouri State - The Bears run it up and why wouldn't they? It'll be their only chance to do so this year most likely.

Western Illinois @ Eastern Illinois - I'm pretty iffy on this one.... hoping the new WIU coaching staff has them ready to go on the road.

Duquesne @ Youngstown State - I think this is the year YSU breaks out of their program's post-Tressel funk and it starts with a convincing win against Duquesne.

South Dakota @ New Mexico - This might be a tight one also but I don't think the Yotes have the horses to pull it off.

Butler @ Indiana State - Big win for ISUb, like MSU probably their only chance to run up the score this year.

Southern Illinois @ Florida Atlantic - I think it'll be close but SIU needs to prove to me they can win close games cuz they were horrible at it the last few years under Lennon.

Valparaiso @ Illinois State - By a lot

South Dakota State @ TCU - I think the Jacks show well but the talent disparity is just too much and the Horny Frogs win by double digits.

Northern Iowa @ Iowa State - I just think UNI is a better team and they'll be ultra-motivated playing against their alleged "big brother".

South Dakota State @ TCU - I think the Jacks show well but the talent disparity is just too much and the Horny Frogs win by double digits.

Northern Iowa @ Iowa State - I just think UNI is a better team and they'll be ultra-motivated playing against their alleged "big brother".

I agree with this except for the UNI/ISU game. Cyclones win, UNI just can't win the big ones. xcoffeex

For the record, and I'm surprised no one corrected this yet, Thumper 8-27 is a Saturday. As for my picks:

Charleston Southern @ North Dakota State-Bison by double digits

Southwestern(Kan.) @ Missouri State-Missouri State by 14.

Western Illinois@Eastern Illinois – Could see this game going either way. But with what WIU is returning, I'm giving them the edge.

Duquesne@ Youngstown State-YSU wins by double digits

South Dakota @ New Mexico-New Mexico is too much for SD to handle. Would be very happy to be wrong here though.

Butler@ Indiana State-Indiana State by double digits.

Southern Illinois @ Florida Atlantic-There is some upset potential by SIU here, however, more than likely Florida Atlantic takes it.

Valparaiso@ Illinois State-Illinois State is putting in their 2nd string before halftime.

South Dakota State @ TCU-Really rooting for an upset here by the Jacks, but don't think “Jack Attack” will be enough to take down the Horned Frogs

Northern Iowa@Iowa State – They've done it before, and while I think Iowa State's new coaching staff is going to get the program going in the right direction, new schemes and coaches set this perfectly to go to UNI.

If you'd looked at film of both Staughan (6-2, 203) and Sam Straub (6-4, 235) you'd see they have the ability to play and excel on any team in the league--let's see how they play in season and then you can start dissing our QBs

Okay....

D2 Stillman

I doubt he faced defenses like NDSU, SDSU, UNI, ISUr...

He has crazy D2 stats, for sure. I'm just not sure how that translates.

Games against FCS programs from that year

Samford: 3-10 8 yards, 7 rushes -8 yards
Alabama State: 19-40 2 INT, 8 rushes -13 yards

Given SIU's roster when SIU lines up in most games this year it will be like a Stillman v Samford for talent level difference.

Now that I'm looking at his stats closer...

15 of his 26 TDs and 1,100 of his yards came in one 4 game stretch against

3-7 Kentucky State (14-25 2 TD 163 yards)
1-8 Lane College (17-27 6 TD 292 yards)
4-6 Benedict (27-40 5 TD 488 yards)
9-3 Tuskegee (14-28 2 TD 132 yards)

His game against Tuskegee wasn't great, he just happened to have his WR get in the end zone twice.

Average over those 4 games -
269 yards
3.75 TD
.5 INT
18-30 (60%)

The average the other 7 games that year?
164 yards
1.5 TD
.86 INT
13-24 (54%)

He might be an all conference guy...I'm not sold on him based on what I can find.

Lots of eyes on YSU in the opener. Question marks on the coach, a QB controversy, weak looking WR group and fans clamoring for the old days of power running football ( which isn't the answer either). Still, YSU should win easy because of an improved D, but the Dukes are a favorite in their weak league and should YSU fail to handle them convincingly, will be viewed negatively again. Pressure is on in PenguinLand.

I get the optimism behind him, I really do. I'm just leery about how many points will be put up when the two options are a D2 transfer who missed all of last season with injury and a kid who played WR/RB.

He will have better talent than he had at Stillman, but he still has bottom 3rd of the MVFC talent around him.

Not counting non-scholly teams that YSU beats up on, or the perennial D-II school they typically play.....the last 4 years vs. FCS scholly non-conference.
My guess is they covered the spread in 2013 but not the other 3 times. Going with my gut and saying they won't again.

2015 - YSU vs. Robert Morris (NEC) W 21-14 (OT) in second game of season

You do realize that five (including three) of the eight games we lost last season were by three or less points: one point to WIU, three to In State and three points to USD--no offense Clenz but your expertise on the scheme and amount of talent on our D is about as great as mine is on your UNI Panthers: that is not much: we've got to learn to win those close games

The reason SIU was in those games? Gone - Iannotti.

Your defense gave up: (remember all of these include Misery State skewing the averages, as they do for anyone that played them last year)
37 points per game (9th in conference by nearly a touchdown)
263 yards rushing per game (5.6 ypc) (9th in conference by over 60 yards per game and over a yard per rush)
21 rush touchdowns (9th in conference)
213 yards passing per game (who needs to pass when you can average 5.6 ypc)
475 yards per game (6.4 ypp) (9th in conference by over 60 yards)
143.4 pass defense efficiency (9th in conference by 15 points)
22 first downs per game (8th in conference and .4 away from 9th)

Had only
5 picks (9th in conference)
13 sacks (8th in conference)

The reason any of those games were close? Iannotti single-handedly carried that team
716 yards rushing - 65 yards per game (8th in conference in both)
3,195 yards passing - 291 per game (top in conference in both)
3,911 total yards - 355 per game (top in conference in both and by over 120 yards per game over second)
30 total TD
2nd in pass efficiency.

If it wasn't for Missouri State's defense being historically bad more people would be aware of just how bad SIU's defense was. It took a historically great season from Iannotti for SIU to be competitive. Say what you want about your D2 transfer and kid from Iowa that had one other offer out of high school, they won't be as good as Iannotti. One doesn't need to be a scheme expert to see that SIU's defense is going to have to improve by about 100 yards and a minimum of 8 points for SIU to win more than 4 or 5 games this year.

I was just every so slightly generous in my numbers

Taking sacks out this was UNI vs the Big Sky rushing last year

EWU:
45 rushes
283 yards
6.3 YPC
1 TD

Cal Poly:
42 rushes
215 yards
5.12 YPC
4 TD

PSU:
53 rushes
415 yards
9.66 YPC
4 TD

Total
140 rushes
913 yards
6.52 YPC
9 TD

Avg
46.66 rushes
304.33 yards
6.52 YPC
3 TD

Meanwhile in MVFC games
372 rushes (46.5 per game)
1,826 yards (228.2 per game)
4.9 YPC
21 TD (2.6 per game)

Safe to say, running in the Big Sky would make life much...much...easier.

Thankfully UNI didn't have to run against UNI's run defense. They gave up, in confence play (against backs like Marshaun Coprich, King Fraizer, Daquan Isom, Mark Iannotti, Brady Mangerelli, etc...)
289 rushes (37 per game)
877 yards (109.6 per game)
3.0 YPC
6 TD (0.75 per game)

For reference, that is over 200 yards less total than NDSU gave up in the conference season....30 yards per game less. Half the TD's NDSU gave up and 1.3 less yards per carry....

Well...Isom certainly did his part....145 yds, 12 ypc and 2 TDs as a true freshman behind a weak oline. I know, I know - it was only 6-7 ypc without that 72 yd run...

Bailey lit up the Bison defense in their first game but the Bison defense did a good job overall the 2nd game to the tune of a little over 200 total yards of offense.

If SIU can get their defense in order and become a good unit, SIU will become a contender.

That's the whole story right there. I think that in spite of it being Hill's first year the Salukis improve. Dale Lennon hired some very weak assistants during his tenure and remained loyal to several of them far longer than he should have. And the 3-4 is no more.

UNI also won that game 49-28, lead by at least 14 pretty much the whole game, and ran just 8 pass plays in the entire second half...6-8 55 yards and a TD.

Yes, Isom had a very nice game. He sprung himself on 2 long TD runs (72 and 61 yards). All the credit to him for making the cuts to make that happen. He had 12 yards on his other 10 carries in the game.

Eh, my bad. I copied from the Valley website so that's where I think I got it. I'll post the new thread with totals for everybody in a bit here.
