CAA Predicted Order of Finish:
1. #3 Richmond
2. #10 William & Mary
3. #9 James Madison
4. #22 Villanova
5. #23 New Hampshire
6. #24 Towson
7. Delaware
8. Stony Brook
9. Maine
10. Elon
11. Albany
12. Rhode Island
Thursday, September 1
Delaware State @ Delaware - 7 PM
Maine @ Connecticut - 7 PM - ASN/ESPN3
#18 North Dakota @ Stony Brook - 7 PM
#10 William & Mary @ North Carolina State - 7:30 PM - ESPN3
Friday, September 2
Albany @ Buffalo - 7 PM - ESPN3
Saturday, September 3
#22 Villanova @ Pittsburgh - 1:30 PM - ESPN3
#3 Richmond @ Virginia - 3:30 PM - ESPN3
Gardner-Webb @ Elon - 3:30 PM - ASN
Morehead State @ #9 James Madison - 6 PM
#24 Towson @ South Florida - 7 PM - ASN/ESPN3
Rhode Island @ Kansas - 7 PM - ESPN3
#23 New Hampshire @ San Diego State - 8:30 PM
My Picks:
Delaware State @ Delaware
-For how bad the Hens looked in 2015, they were the best FCS team in the state again. No reason to expect the Hornets to get their first win in the series
Maine @ Connecticut
-UConn made a bowl last year, Maine is debuting a coach. Usually CAA teams do represent well in East Hartford though
#18 North Dakota @ Stony Brook
-"World-beating 2016 Fighting Hawks" make their debut on Long Island, don't look like their in state brethren in a close one
#10 William & Mary @ North Carolina State
-NC State usually is sneaky good, pulls away in second half
Albany @ Buffalo
-Rematch from last year, should go the same way
#22 Villanova @ Pittsburgh
-Neither team should be fazed by the emptiness of a Pitt game at Heinz Field, Pitt should be best FBS team in Pennsylvania
#3 Richmond @ Virginia
-Cavaliers were a mess, Spiders rolled at end of last year. Might not end up being as much of an upset by the end of the year
Gardner-Webb @ Elon
-Both teams middle to low half of conferences, so I'll take the CAA team over the Big South team
Morehead State @ #9 James Madison
-Another opening weekend rematch, might be slightly closer than the blowout from last season
#24 Towson @ South Florida
-USF was division runners-up in 2015 (to Temple), should have more depth to survive Florida heat & humidity
Rhode Island @ Kansas
-These two teams combined to a 1-22 2015 (don't ask about the 1 win). 0-12 Jayhawks barely allowed S Dakota State to escape Lawrence last year, get first win since November 2014
#23 New Hampshire @ San Diego State
-Aztecs are tough to beat in Qualcomm, at least Wildcats could work in a beach trip to get some "scenic" views

Delaware 40 Delaware St. 8 - Blue Hens say "cluck you" to their down state opponents.
UConn 31 Maine 10 - old Yankee Conference matchup. The Huskies just too much for the Black Bears.
Stony Brook 20 North Dakota 14 - The Sea Wolves are rude hosts to the Fighting Hawks. Typical New Yawkers.
NC State 35 William & Mary 14 - Wolfpack are a hungry bunch & pounce on the Tribe here.
Buffalo 30 Albany 14 - The Bulls win the battle of Upstate NY.
Pitt 35 Villanova 13 - last time these teams met a Nova running back named Westbrook gave Pitt a scare.
Virginia 34 Richmond 21- Potential upset here, but something tells me the Cavs squash the Spiders.
Elon 24 Gardner-Webb 16 - The Phoenix rise to the occasion and turns back G-W.
JMU 54 Morehead State 14 - who needs Vad Lee?
USF 34 Towson 14 - At least Ambrose works on his tan for a few days.
Kansas 35 Rhode Island 16 - Teams combined for 1 win last season. May do it again.
San Diego St. 38 UNH 12 - UNH players build up frequent flyer mileage past few seasons.

The Stony Brook- North Dakota game is real interesting. SBU is usually a very tough out at home.
Delaware 37 Delaware State 10 - Hens better not start with a bad loss for the second year in a row...
UConn 27 Maine 6 - Diaco is doing a great job in Storrs. If their offense can improve they'll be a fringe Top 25 team.
North Dakota 34 SBU 27 - game of the week imo.
NC State 41 William & Mary 20 - could be interesting for a half...
Buffalo 38 Albany 13 - Bulls should win rather easily.
Pitt 45 Villanova 24 - Panthers almost always have talent. Villanova has the better coach..
Virginia 37 Richmond 31 - I give the Spiders a reasonable chance to win...
Garder-Webb 27 Elon 20 - I have no clue...
JMU 59 Morehead State 13 - the Dukes should role....
USF 49 Towson 17 - USF is the preseason favorite in the AAC East. They're good...
Kansas 30 URI 6 - what a horrible game...
SDSU 62 UNH 20 - Aztecs are a trendy pick to go undefeated. The Wildcats get run..

Delaware 24 Delaware St. 7 – Ho Hum
UConn 27 Maine 17 – Maine gives another New England FBS team a tough game
Stony Brook 24 North Dakota 17 – I’m already on the hook predicting a SB win on another thread
NC State 40 William & Mary 21 – Not much to say typical W&M vs ACC match-up
Albany 25 Buffalo 24 – My big week one upset.
Pitt 35 Villanova 13 – I’ll go with GangTackle’s prediction, he should know better than me
Virginia 33 Richmond 24- Spiders stay close in the 1st half, Cavs pull away in the 2nd.
Elon 18 Gardner-Webb 14 – Elon you better do it, otherwise I'm done picking you to win at home
JMU 48 Morehead State 7 – Someone suggested Morehead may be becoming JMU’s rivalry game
USF 42 Towson 17 - Some posters picking TU in an upset, I think they are mistaken
Kansas 45 Rhode Island 10 – RI makes Kansas look like a legitimate Big12 team, at least for one game
San Diego St. 52 UNH 17 – UNH makes SDSU look like a legitimate FBS Top 25 team, which they probably are.

The same someone whose team also has had them on the schedule recently along with other cupcakes.
This and central CT this year is our final meeting with them. They're remaining games on the book scheduled during the Mickey Matthews years. He wanted easy wins when you lose to an fbs and then play a CAA schedule.

Delaware 55, Del State 10: rout helps Hen fan egos to stay intact - for a week.
UConn 21, Maine 3: The Huskies used to be a mid-pack CAA program. They still are.
North Dakota 16, Stony Brook 10: classic FCS intersectional rivalry.
W&M 34, NC State 30: after pounding the Wolfpack on the hard court, NC State falls now on gridiron, officially becoming W&Ms ACC bitch (temporarily replacing UVA).
Buffalo 27, Albany 10: winner gets autographed picture of Chris Cuomo kissing Kaye Ballard.
Pitt 42 Villanova 14: Cherry a big loss.
Virginia 47, Richmond 20: W&M knows how to beat the Cavaliers, Spiders don't.
Elon 21, GW 13: just because we need this one.
JMU 45, Morehead 6: Dukes polishing up their résumé for Sun Belt observers.
USF 28, Towson 24: refs help Bulls late, Towson has better team.
Kansas 31, Rhode Island 10: Jayhawks "flex their muscles".
SDSU 56, UNH 13: Not close.

Delaware 35, Del State 14 - Delaware O and D can handle the in-state rival
UConn 28, Maine 14 - UConn pulls away late
North Dakota 23, Stony Brook 13 Good game for most of it
NC State 35 W&M 31 - An official notices that W&M is leading 31-28 with 3 minutes to go and intentionally sets a pick on one of the Tribe CBs to allow an open NC State player catch the ball and score a TD.
Buffalo 35, Albany 13 - Not close
Pitt 30 Villanova 18 - Nova with 3 TDs and 3 missed XPs to go along with 2 missed FGs
Richmond 31 UVA 28 - UVA just is not good and Richmond is
Elon 17 GW 13 - not an good one but an exciting one
JMU 42 Morehead 13 - Could get ugly early.
USF 31 Towson 17 - Close early but not late
Kansas 42 Rhode Island 3 - could get ugly early
SDSU 42 UNH 28 - Not enough depth for UNH

Not a distinguished opening weekend as CAA goes 4-8. Only the Spiders carry the upset banner for the week although W&M makes it interesting in Raleigh. However, no worries as Week 2 features a return to form.

Villanova agrees. Going to be an emotional start for Pitt as talented RB James Conner returns from his successful battle from lymphoma. Get to Lehigh game healthy, make a good showing, & cash that check!!

Agreed, especially on the health part. I hate these games--FBS guys are just bigger and stronger. Remember how bad the NC State game screwed us with injuries??

I've created an excel sheet with anyone who has a complete set of picks in their post (21 as of now). Will be easier in later weeks, but I'll put out the ratio of picks the morning of the games being played and score the majority as a "bot" type to compare. 1 point for correct OOC game, 2 for CAA games.

Delaware State @ Delaware: Has St ever beat the Hens? Serious question.
Maine @ Connecticut: Maine is my CAA sleeper this year, but not FBS-upset level sleeper. UConn should be decent.
#18 North Dakota @ Stony Brook: Still waiting for SBU to put it altogether. They have talent but results lacking the last few years.
#10 William & Mary @ North Carolina State: W&M will be solid again, but NCST has too much depth, will pull away in 2nd half.
Friday, September 2
Albany @ Buffalo: Bulls all day.
Saturday, September 3
#22 Villanova @ Pittsburgh: Maybe if Robertson were still at QB, but not now. Pitt rolls.
#3 Richmond @ Virginia: Richmond with the upset, Spiders should be one of the best teams in FCS this year.
Gardner-Webb @ Elon: Rooting for and picking G-W.
Morehead State @ #9 James Madison: JMU picks up an easy win.
#24 Towson @ South Florida: Expecting a big year out of the Tigers in 2016, tough FBS opponent to open up with though. Head says USF but I'm going TIGERS.
Rhode Island @ Kansas: Poor Rhody.
#23 New Hampshire @ San Diego State: SDSU will win it, I think UNH is a .500 team this year.

I don't think it says anything personally. I think most people figured the Wolfpack had superior talent and depth from the start. You never know what you're going to get with NC State. They could easily be a 7-8 win team.
Maine is the one that surprised me. UConn is not UConn of 2-3 years ago. They will compete in the AAC this year and finish over .500. They did not play well last night but Maine had a lot to do with that.

Yes, Richmond always misses an extra point, sometimes 2 and thrown in a field goal ,too. Transfer kicker from ODU out with injury, all conf kicker from last season decides not to play, and former high school kicker, 3 years ago, handling kickoffs. Special teams are a constant challenge for Spiders

It says nothing except that they lost to who they were supposed to lose to by how much they were supposed to lose by. It's neutral and tells us nothing about wm this year either way. Fbs games are pointless for determining a team's performance unless they win. Even then, we beat tech and then finished 6-5.

I'd still not take too much away from maine's game. They played well but uconn was also clearly a poor team. Maine did fade late when they had momentum and that's never good. The only thing I took away was that Maine isn't going to be a bottom CAA team but who knows how high they'll finish.

I think if there is any take away from last night's CAA games it's that almost all conference games this season are going to be a struggle. Stony Brook and Maine both rated in the lower half of the conference preseason, showed up bigger than expected. W&M, a preseason top 3, a little worse than expected. Delaware, stuck right in the middle of the preseason poll, won solidly against a weaker opponent as expected.

They did indeed. 2010, VT was ranked 13th in FBS at the time. Arguably the second most impressive FCS win over an FBS opponent. Unfortunately JMU went on to lose to Delaware, UNH, Villanova, UMass and Richmond and failed to make the playoffs. Which illustrates the point Rottinfer makes about the lack of reliability of FBS wins as season predictors for FCS teams.

Using this (and stony brook, and the fact that the CAA has had semi finalists in back to back to back (right?) years) as a backdrop, why is it that people say the CAA is down or dropping off? Last year as an example, we and W&M were excellent, and JMU with a healthy Vad Lee might've been the best in the country. I'm new to AGS, so I'm sure I've missed a discussion, but what is it that makes people call the CAA overrated?

Well this is just my opinion. First off, we've been hit hard by conference realignment, while the Big Sky and MVFC have been untouched. The MVFC has the five time champions pushing up the value of their conference from top to bottom. We have Elon and URI really dragging us all down at the bottom, struggling to win any games some years. New additions Albany and SB have been mediocre at best so far, but Albany just had their biggest moment so far since joining the CAA tonight.
It's about how many teams year in and year out your conference gets in the playoffs, how many playoff wins you have outside of playing your own CAA members in the playoffs. It's about FBS wins, again NDSU has five consecutive wins that helps them.
I'm sure some NDSU fan will come in here and see this, but the MVFC is being significantly brought up by the value of NDSU right now. It's like having a mega mansion in your average american neighborhood. It's bound to improve the value of everyone else within the neighborhood by default. When their reign ends, it'll normalize again.

very well put. And makes sense to me. It really feels like MVFC is NDSU (and UNI) and then teams riding on those teams' coat tails. I remember being so nervous going into to Ill. St. game last year, just off reputation. And then we kinda dominated. It was surreal.

So is everyone Little Sisters of the Poor except NDSU/MVFC? That just seems like kind of an all or nothing stance. CAA routinely has 4-6 teams ranked.
To be clear, I'm only picking brains, not arguing. But I truly think a Vad Lee-led JMU team could've beaten any team in the country last year.

It really depends, if we do extremely well OOC over the next two weeks and have a few teams that if not in 1/2nd win conference games consistently I can see 5. If the teams in 3-8th go back and forth and no one separates, I can see a solid 3 with one of the outliers taken as a 4th at like a 7-4 record
I most likely see us getting 4 since it's so competitive and more conferences that get 1/2 bids are seeing 2/3 as of recent years

I think 4-6 (which is crazy high, I know). As long as we do what we need to, UR, WM, JMU should be shoe-ins. Villanova and Towson are clearly good enough to get in. And Stony Brook showed they can use their southern, er, northern speed pretty damn well.

JMU 80, Morehead St 7. Jeez JMU, ever hear about a thing called overkill? And you wonder why no one else in the conference likes you!
Right, because
We pulled our starting quarterback half way through the 3rd quarter and even played our third string quarterback in the last quarter.
We played our third and fourth string running backs some in the first half and we didn't play our 1st or 2nd string running back's after half way through the 3rd quarter.
We threw 13 passes the whole game, only 3 of which were in the second quarter.
2 touchdowns were on drives of less than 15 yards as a result of turnovers by Morehead State. 1 touchdown was a punt return.
Could we have pulled our starters immediately at the second half? Sure. If we wanted to run up the score we could have easily scored 100+.
I mean, unless you expect us to take a knee on three downs and punt, I don't know what you want from us.

Houston appears poised to fit in really well up there.

Not saying that at all, I'm just saying nothing speaks louder than lifting the hardware that matters if you want to be the top conference. We haven't been doing that. Only two runner ups since 2010 too.
As for our team last year, we may have won a playoff game or two with Vad at home, but as you saw in our game last year, our defense was historically bad. We were not going anywhere near Frisco with the way our defense underwhelmed. I'm sure I'll catch crap for saying that but they know it's true.

Blame our new coach. I think he went 70-0 in the citadel's first game last year. After years of Mickey ball, it's refreshing to see coaches who are willing to not let off the gas. It's helpful when your defense has been letting you down.
I know it's morehead state and I need to temper my expectations but damn did we play well last night. Domination in every facet of the game. It was refreshing.

Seriously, as has already been pointed out, JMU was playing it's 3rd and 4th string players early, and was running on almost every down in the second half. Whether Morehead St. is that bad, or JMU that good, will have to wait until more of the season is played. Last night JMU didn't run-up the score though, and JMU looked liked a seasoned, well-coached team and Morehead looked "pretty" in their white unis.

Actually, I don't think anyone surprised by the outcome, and believe it or not, a lot of optimism in the way the D played and some for the O-Line play. Rookie QB and a couple of key receivers not playing.
We made San Diego State work hard all day they are light years better at this juncture than Buffalo, UConn or that dismal Virginia team we saw yesterday. A lot of success in game 1 is determined by how well organized and experienced a team is playing together. SDS Univ, won their last 10 games of 2015, including a Conf Championship game and a big one-sided bowl win. They returned the vast majority of starters from last year.
But please sell us short based on one game like has normally happened during the past 12 seasons. That has always worked to our advantage.

Could be JMU is that good. Give a head coach like Houston all those resources, and a much better environment for recruiting, it might be off to the races for the Dukes. But don't forget, they face their 2nd brutally tough opponent in a row at home against Central Connecticut, so that should really clear things up.

Lol. You managed to insult Houston and all of JMU in under 10 words.
When your 4th team RB gets 3 TDs, there isn't much you can do. We threw 13 passes, TOTAL. Were our RBs just supposed to fall down?
It was 49-0 after 25 minutes of play.
Honestly, the only thing we could have done was take a knee on EVERY SNAP of the 2nd half. I would argue that would have been far more disrespectful.

You will have fun padding your stats again next weekend when you host powerhouse and heavyweight Central Connecticut State who by the way,as host, lost to Patriot League powerhouse and heavyweight Lafayette by 2 TD's this past weekend.
We are looking forward to the purple heralded running attack in our Brickhouse on 11/5.We don't intend to assist you in your artificial stat padding during that contest.

After appearing to have turned a corner the end of last season, it must be frustrating to start the season like that. Are Elon fans having serious doubts that Skrosky is the guy to build a winning program ?

Some are but some never were on with the hire from the beginning. Ive met and talked to the guy, and like him. im not sure where to place the blame. Especially with the off target passes and dropped balls. True reason for our loss was know going into the season. We had a weakness in the OL and GW figured that out and ran it down our throats. Looking at where we were I give a lot of leeway to our current coach. He had a lot to do to build us back up and that takes time. It seems he struck out with his first 2 QB picks a both are decent but not super status. There downfield is lacking and they rely on the WR to make the play in YAC. Its a punch in the gut but the season just started, a lot can change.
I may be a little conservative but I do like to give the benefit of the doubt instead of armchair QBing it

I'm just now starting to watch the Towson/USF game from last week. USF's uniforms might just be the worst uniforms I've ever seen in my life.
