View Full Version : Southland Conference Pick'em: Week 1
BEAR

Two weeks before the season!
Even though I won't be running the contest this year maybe another SLC fan can pick it up.
Here's our first games. BOLD who will win and the point spread! UCA plays on 9/1, NWST plays on 9/2, and the rest on 9/3.
HBU at UCA
NWST at Baylor
ACU at Air Force
Texas A&M Kingsville at UIW
Terleton State at McNeese
Coastal Carolina at Lamar
SLU at Oklahoma State
Oklahoma Panhandle State at SAM
SFA at Texas Tech
Here's my predictions: No idea really...just making stuff up. xlolx
HBU at UCA +63 I think UCA averages scoring 70 a game on the Huskies.
NWST at Baylor +56 FBS opponent that is usually pretty good on offense plus the demons have lost their best receiver.
ACU at Air Force +21 Not sure on this one because I don't follow Air Force but I figure FBS depth will win out in the fourth.
Texas A&M Kingsville at UIW+7 No idea really.
Terleton State at McNeese +28 McNeese should win by more but its the first game. Getting the water out of the stadium still.
Coastal Carolina at Lamar +7 Toss up game for me. I don't follow CC so they might run Lamar. I claim ignorance on it.
SLU at Oklahoma State +14 SLU is packing their team with size but OK ST. has enough offense to make it happen.
Oklahoma Panhandle State at SAM+++++whatever they feel like scoring
SFA at Texas Tech+21 I'm hoping for a SFA win but depth again will win in the fourth IMO.

We did hang with KSU somewhat for a half, two seasons ago in Conque’s first year. Which gives me hope of breaking 20 as Conque was known for playing FBS teams pretty well during his time at UCA.

OPS is no Pueblo.
Huskies are still pups.
The Pokes will saddle up and ride roughshod over the Lions.
Kingsbury has his recruits playing his brand of ball heading into his third year. Jacks will get the axe.
TAMU Kingsville and Tarleton State have a better shot at upsets than OPS. McNeese does not suck as bad as they tell us though and UIW looked good at times last year.....so I don't look for any upsets there either.
ACU will strafe ACU.

Again, I don't see it happening, and if it did, that would be all she wrote for Kingsbury.
Plus Kingsbury says this is the best team he has ever had while at Tech.

UNA and Pueblo have as much in common with Panhandle State as Northern Iowa or Jax State with Arkansas Pine Bluff or Houston Baptist. Panhandle State was a NAIA school until just recently.

The other side view, amazing to see the entire bowl covered with fans.
Yes you would think Sam Houston State for the biggest crowd, but this game was big time as both teams came into the game 7-0 and nationally ranked #3 SFA vs. #1 McNeese State.
McNeese won the game 34-16 and SFA would go on to finished the regular season at 9-1. The Cowboys as well would continued to win going a perfect 10-0 during the regular season. Both teams would advance to the Semifinals Division I Championship Game before losing again (SFA to Montana 14-70) (McNeese to Marshall 13-25)
Would have been something to have an all Southland Conference National Championship Game.
Sorry can't seem to locate the attendance on the 1993 game where it was #16 SFA vs. #9 McNeese State

Camp news.
Its all good for the Wildcats. No football injuries.
One summer accident will slow down one of our incoming freshmen running backs for a couple of weeks. Some losses due to attrition, guys going to D2 for D3 schools in search of playing time. We picked a couple of late transfers, mostly wide receivers. We will count heavily on transfer wide outs this fall.

Yeah, what year(s) did SFA have to forfeit all of those playoff games? And, moreover, did they ever apologize to the teams who played within the rules, but didn't get to advance?

Well you know the saying - "Better safe than sorry". So, you probably can take another look at those huge OL Bears after the second game, and
make sure they are ready for those tough Southland Games. Just a suggestion, as I am one who really cares about the health of players.

Not good for SFA as the weather continues to play a role.
The inconsistencies in the weather throughout the week have forced a number of changes to the fall camp routine, giving SFA less recovery time between the practice sessions. Coupled with a number of injuries on both sides of the ball, Conque and the coaching staff will forego the second scrimmage as a precautionary measure.
That don't sound good this close to the season.

Anything that minimizes the amount of purple in the SLC is a good thing....
Speaking of colors, I read this in an SB Nation article evaluating new uniforms. It was written about the Clemson but if you delete Clemson and Tigers and insert Sam Houston and Bearcats.....it applies quite well.
Orange is an ugly color, and no amount of Bearcat paw outlines and updates to the uniform will change that. Orange dominates the whole outfit, and that’s just not good in any way.
I understand that it is the school’s color. They’re Bearcats after all. We just can’t sit here as decent, civilized people and pretend that there’s anything redeemable about a predominately orange uniform. I refuse. It’s an intrusive color, not bright enough like yellow to represent sunshine and happiness, but still begging for your attention. Just there, in your face, making everything uncomfortable. It’s the morning breath of colors.

Here's my predictions: No idea really...just making stuff up. xlolx
ACU at Air Force +21 Not sure on this one because I don't follow Air Force but I figure FBS depth will win out in the fourth.
Air Force returns 32 seniors, many of whom are two year starters. AFA went 10-3 when this year's seniors were sophomores, and won the Mountain West Mountain Division last year. They have beaten rival Boise State two years in a row. AFA has not lost at home in two years, grinding down opponents with its option running game that leaves the opposition sucking wind in the fourth quarter in the thin air at 6600 feet above sea level. Some are predicting this will be AFA's best team ever.
Good year or not, the Falcons are a perfect 20-0 vs FCS opponents. Sportbet.com has AFA as 41 point favorites over the Wildcats.
ACU will beat the spread. That's my optimistic prediction.

An FCS school made this list???
The most prolific offense will come from the state of Texas
A program in the state of Texas will have the most prolific offense in all of college football -- Sam Houston State, led by two guys from the northeast, K.C. Keeler and his OC Phil Longo, and their QB Jeremiah Briscoe, who came from UAB.

They are starting to shut down parts of the streets around the stadium! Marking the spots for the tents! Got the sweepers out on the field grooming it! Pressure washers are blasting the stands! Putting up new advertising signs!

HBU at UCA- The Huskies are who we thought they were. No surprise upset here. UCA wins 56-13. Could have been much worse. 6 RBs played. 15 tackles for loss. UCA on the other hand, still not sure with that game. Samford next week will be the test.
NWST at Baylor- We will find out tonight!
ACU at Air Force
Texas A&M Kingsville at UIW
Terleton State at McNeese
Coastal Carolina at Lamar

Looks like WR Aaron Piper out too, only taking 70 players to Lubbock, so playing minus our best running back and our fastest receiver. That ought to even the field a bit for Tech lol

Not a great week for the SLC. Blown out by p5 opponents. A loss to a D2 school. A couple of wins over an average and below average D2 teams. A 16 point loss and a pounding by G5 teams. And UCA beats down One of our own.
