RIO DE JANEIRO — Four American swimmers, including the six-time gold medalist Ryan Lochte, were held up at gunpoint early Sunday morning, according to the United States Olympic Committee.
The other United States swimmers robbed, according to a statement from the committee, were Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen.
“Their taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes’ money and other personal belongings,” a spokesman for the United States Olympic Committee said. “All four athletes are safe and cooperating with authorities.”
Lochte told NBC News (http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/2016-rio-summer-olympics/u-s-swimmer-ryan-lochte-robbed-gunpoint-brazil-n630396) that one of the men put a cocked gun to his head.
“We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing just a police badge and they pulled us over,” Lochte said. “They pulled out their guns, they told the other swimmers to get down on the ground — they got down on the ground. I refused, I was like we didn’t do anything wrong, so — I’m not getting down on the ground.
“And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, “Get down,” and I put my hands up, I was like ‘whatever.’ He took our money, he took my wallet — he left my cell phone, he left my credentials.”...

Yep, was in Cancun once, we were advised only to use resort transportation and that local cabbies were deeply involved with local criminals.

I became suspicious when I heard that they had to stop for gas.
Also, the IOC initially denied that it happened. Those crooks were probably in on it too.

They have pulled 2 of the guys from their plane before heading back to the US. There seems to be questions on what really happened.

I'm not sure whether the athletes fabricated part (or all) of their story, or whether the Brazilian government is just in cover-up mode.

Ryan Lochte and the three US swimmers were not robbed but instead ordered to pay up after destroying a gas station bathroom. Video shows the men trashing a restroom and breaking the door, followed by a security guard pulling a gun when they refuse to pay. US Olympic swimmers Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz have been detained by Brazilian authorities and remain in the country. The two men were attempting to fly back to the United States from Rio when they were dramatically removed from their flight at the last minute Jimmy Feigen will also give a statement to police in Brazil on Thursday, as will the driver of the cab the men were in that night.
If this is true then holy crap...

Lying to the police, especially the gun to the head part, was inexcusable stupidity.

I can't imagine myself, when someone told me to get on the ground, to wait until he put a pistol to my head- then cocking it- and saying "Whatever".
I normally would say it was BS- but then I remembered that Lochte is really that stupid and might actually say that.

Some US Olympic official tries to explain away as "some kids" doing too much partying and should be given a break. Isn't Lochte 32 freakin' years old?? He owns a Rolls Royce. This guy, if true what is now seeming likely, should spend some time in a Brazilian jail. A black eye for the US team that has had some amazing accomplishments.

I keep thinking the same thing. And one report last night mentioned that he told his mother about what "happened" and that she was the one who called the police....so it sounds an awful lot like this all came to be due to a 30 something athlete who didn't want mommy to know he was out drinking and breaking into gas station bathrooms...but for him to stick to the story at that point...so stupid....

I agree, this Lochte guy needs his own designation. I wonder who wrote his apology because I doubt very seriously that he did. I would like to see him read the Twitter apology but that might be it's own pay per view event.

I wondered the exact same thing. If he was just having fun with some people acting like a moron to get a reaction. However, he has been very consistent through the years with his interviews and I've never seen a shred of evidence that he isn't plain dumb. Like a real life Zoolander movie.

Now a USA Today investigation saying that Lochte isn't entirely wrong and that there has been some inaccurate reporting in the rush to portray him negatively...
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/rio-2016/2016/08/21/investigation-ryan-lochte-rio-olympics-authorities/89082232/ (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/rio-2016/2016/08/21/investigation-ryan-lochte-rio-olympics-authorities/89082232/)
RIO DE JANEIRO – Seven days after an incident that will in part define the Rio Olympics, details are becoming clearer about what happened during a gas station encounter between four U.S. swimmers and security guards, and not everyone has concluded Ryan Lochte and his teammates are entirely in the wrong or that the account offered by Rio authorities is entirely accurate.
Lochte has admitted he exaggerated his initial description of how the four men were stopped in their taxi and robbed by men who flashed badges, as well as his sensational allegation of a gun being held to his forehead.
But a narrative of the night’s events – constructed by USA TODAY Sports from witness statements, official investigations, surveillance videos and media reports – supports Lochte’s later account in which he said he thought the swimmers were being robbed when they were approached at a gas station by armed men who flashed badges, pointed guns at them and demanded money.
A Brazilian judge says police might have been hasty in determining the security guards, by how they dealt with the swimmers, did not commit a robbery. A lawyer who has practiced in Brazil for 25 years says she does not think the actions of Lochte and teammate Jimmy Feigen constitute the filing of a false police report as defined under Brazilian law.
An extensive review of surveillance footage by a USA TODAY Sports videographer who also visited the gas station supports swimmer Gunnar Bentz’s claim that he did not see anyone vandalize the restroom, an allegation that in particular heightened media portrayals of the four as obnoxious Americans behaving recklessly in a foreign country. Meanwhile, Rio authorities have declined to identify the guards or offer any details beyond confirming they are members of law enforcement who were working a private security detail.
As the Rio Games closing ceremony was held Sunday night, all four swimmers had left Brazil. Two of them, Bentz and Jack Conger, face no charges. Feigen paid a settlement to avoid charges and returned home.
The case against Lochte, who has been pilloried around the world for his embellished initial account and blamed for offending an entire country as it proudly hosted the Summer Olympics, has yet to proceed.
It is clear from all accounts that a Portuguese-English language barrier played a major role in the incident and that a bilingual Brazilian witness who stepped forward at the scene was critical in preventing a tense situation from escalating.
The witness, Fernando Deluz, says he got involved after one of the guards pulled a gun on the men.
"As soon as they drew their weapon, that's when I got worried,” Deluz, a disc jockey, told USA TODAY Sports on Saturday.
“It was also so fast, and what I wanted was to resolve the situation,” says Deluz, who days later talked to police. “If it hadn't been for wanting to resolve that, if I hadn't involved myself, I thought – the police chief told me, ‘Man, if you hadn't gone there in that moment, a tragedy could have occurred.’ ”...

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/latest-on-ryan-lochte-rio-police-chief-exaggerated-his-version-of-events-too-141250255.html
There is no evidence Ryan Lochte or his three U.S. swimming teammates ever entered — let alone damaged — a bathroom at the gas station where a late-night rest stop exploded into an international incident at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics last week, according to a USA Today report (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/rio-2016/2016/08/21/investigation-ryan-lochte-rio-olympics-authorities/89082232/) on Monday night.
In a press conference called to debunk Lochte’s claims of a robbery at gunpoint, Rio police chief Fernando Veloso painted the bathroom as a crime scene, claiming American swimmers Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen, along with Lochte, broke a soap dispenser and mirror. Meanwhile, media outlets cited law enforcement officials who accused them of also breaking a bathroom door.
However, there is no such damage, and none of those items appear to have been replaced, per the USA Today report. Likewise, the newspaper reviewed extensive security footage from the Shell station, including a camera aimed at the restroom entrance, and the swimmers never entered the door.
Instead, the swimmers urinated on the backside of the gas station, and an intoxicated Lochte tore a “loosely attached” advertisement from an exterior wall, according to a police statement from Bentz and an eyewitness account to USA Today by Fernando Deluz — a disc jockey who translated the heated discussion between the American swimmers and the Portuguese-speaking security guards.
“If I hadn’t involved myself,” Deluz told the newspaper, adding that one guard had drawn his gun, “I thought — the police chief told me, ‘Man, if you hadn’t gone there in that moment, a tragedy could have occurred.”
Furthermore, the armed security guards indeed demanded payment from the Americans, per Deluz.
This latest report raises questions about the Rio police chief’s public portrayal of the U.S. swimmers as more vandals than victims, as well as his willingness to overlook actions taken by security guards, who were off-duty law enforcement officers. While it does not excuse them for public urination and tearing a poster off a wall, one can understand — considering the language barrier and level of intoxication — how Lochte & Co. thought they were robbed at gunpoint by men posing as police...
