The Ivy League has six schools on this list. Not too many other FCS schools made it. Harvard is one of those schools that didn't make it. xthumbsupx

No Grambling?
It's based on poll appearances from 1936 on.

Be interesting to see a similar poll taken on 1-AA/FCS schools since the division began in 1978....any takers? Did the AP have 1-AA polls from 1978 on?

The AP doesn't have an FCS poll, and never has as long as I've been following it...

Before there was Division 2 the schools were categorized as Big school and small schools. Or University and Small College. There was a poll for each. Plus many FCS schools of today were considered is the Big school and small school polls.

But did they have a designated I-AA poll after it was formed in '78?

Notre Dame didn't play in bowl games for about half the time period reviewed. That's where the majority of teams get most of their points using this flawed methodology. How about 5 points per season when a team has an exclusive season contract with a major national TV network.

Wait what? I don't see anything that mentions points for just going to a bowl game. It is all about the polls.

Oops! Your right. Being a highly objective, life long ND fan, I guess I was just too infuriated by the fact they were not #1, to actually read the criteria accurately.

Kind of like Lehigh being second in number of lacrosse national championships. We were a national power until these new fangled things called helmets came along, then it took us a while to adapt. By the time we did, they started making the equipment out of this stuff called plastic and we never recovered.

Fairly certain there 1-AA polls in the 1980s....not sure what service was doing it then.
1-AA/FCS would be pretty hard to quantify etc with teams moving up to FBS, other schools moving into FCS or starting new programs etc.
It would be sort of interesting though....FCS has definitely changed since the 1980s....many more schools now and many then who have since gone FBS. This 1987 poll (not sure from where) has the 1-AA Top 20.....8 of those schools are now FBS (Idaho dropping down would make 7)
