What are the top games you can think of that should have been FCS wins over FBS teams that slipped away? These are the ones that stick out to me....
5. Cal Poly at Wisconsin 2008 - Poly loses a thriller in OT.
4. Samford at Central Florida 2008 - Samford almost beats one of the top Conference USA teams...a late kickoff return TD puts UCF over the top.
3. Jacksonville State at Auburn 2015 - Timid play-calling cost Jacksonville State what should've been a win over a ranked SEC team
2. Northern Iowa at Iowa 2009 - UNI almost beats an Iowa team that won the Orange Bowl. Got two chances to kick a field goal at the end to win it and didn't get it.
1. McNeese versus Nebraska 2014 - Game was headed to OT before McNeese State missed multiple tackles on Amir Abdullah and the game ends

2014: Villanova @ Syracuse. The Orangemen survive 27-26 in double OT. Nova missed a chip shot FG at the end of regulation that would have given the FCS Wildcats a 20-17 win. Instead it ended 17-17 then 20-20 after 1st OT. Syracuse would stop Villanova's QB John Robertson on a QB draw on the 2-point try and prevail 27-26.

Two that immediately stick out to me as a JMU fan.
2009 - We took Maryland to OT and should've won in regulation. A series of shady pass interference calls (i think that's what they were) helped prolong a drive for MD that should've ended with a punt or field goal to still be behind. They tie the game and then their depth took over in OT.
2013 - We went down to the wire against Akron and most certainly should have won that game. You want to guess what happened? That's right! The Zebras got involved! A phantom unsportsmanlike conduct on our RB stalled our second to last drive that was trying to milk time. Unless it was something he said, I believe replays showed nothing physical happened.
It was mickey's last and worst year probably, the defense was well in decline and we're still reeling on this side of the ball to this day. That defense then did nothing to stop Akron. They scored in no time to take a 2 point lead.
We march down the field but of course Mickey managed to waste all of our timeouts and we're within field goal range with maybe 15-20 seconds left and the clock ticking. We try to rush our field goal unit out on the field but not surprisingly the Akron defense is blatantly dragging ass getting in formation AND the officials aren't even trying to get in place in a timely fashion. That allows all the remaining time to milk off the clock despite our side of the ball all set up and ready to snap and kick the field goal for the win.
The officials just walk off the field and one defensive player was still laying on the ground I believe. Mickey was in the head official's face but they just ignore him and walk to the locker room, content to let Akron drag ass for 20-30 seconds and win the game. Yeah I know, we should've had a timeout but there was no urgency whatsoever from the officials at the end of the game.

For me 2004 Furman and Pittsburg . Recollection - at or near the end of the third qtr fu ahead by two touchdowns. Pitt decimated our secondary and we lose in overtime (I think). While not great Pitt wins the big east that year.

2009: Keydets at USMA......VMI leading 17-14 midway in the 4th......on a 3rd and 9, Army tries a pass to their tall WR they had that year. He caught the ball, but his feet/toes were off the ground, and outside the plane of the sideline stripe. His feet came down at least 12 inches out of bounds. the two refs on that sideline both immediately called the pass incomplete. BUT, the replay ref, upstairs and on his own, buzzed down to hold up play to look at it again, and reversed the call........Army went in and scored the winning TD w/7 minutes to play.....

Auburn. Number 6 team in the country at the time.
We won that game. Officials just suck. Timid play calling had nothing to do with it. There was just a couple little things that messed us up. A shanked punt, a missed FG, blatant **** ups by the refs, and two TD passes that were literally half an inch out of bounds both times. If just one of those mistakes didn't happen we would have won.

I think they were #4 at the time. I remembered thinking about it that day when I saw you all were leading late and remembering that App State beating #5 Michigan was the biggest FCS upset of all time in terms of the losing team's rank. I remember thinking this would trump that App State win so they had to be #4.

We jumped offsides at the goal line on the previous drive...and then at the tail end of Abdullah's run, there was a pretty egregious clip that wasn't called...
We shoulda won that game...No offsides, we're up seven with under two minutes to play....And, of course, if we tackle the sumbitch, that missed clipping call is moot....

Portland State at Boise State, I want to say in 2006. It was in the midst of one of the Broncos long home field winning streaks. Portland State succeeded in muddying up the game, was ahead at the half, and the game was tied with six minutes to go before Boise State scored two quick touchdowns. When it was all over, we had to be happy with being the team that Boise scored the fewest points on during that particular streak.

Holding, not called. Should have brought back Roc's TD catch and forced third and very long, which they couldn't convert to save their lives all game long.

They were 6 in the AP poll, however the point spread was supposed to be larger than App State-Michigan. They were supposed to bend us over. In retrospect though, even if we had won I think App State's win over Michigan is still more impressive just because Auburn was not nearly as good as Michigan was when App State beat them.

SFA vs. SMU (2009)
Jacks lead by Walter Payton winner QB Jeremy Moses had a 23-14 lead in the 4th quarter which was quickly erased with the Ponies taking a 24-23 lead with about 7:00 remaining.
Lumberjacks though missed a 39 yard field goal to go ahead with about 2:00 remaining. Jacks had almost 500 yards of offense in that game (400 yards passing 2 TDS by Moses) But 5 picks and a fumble needless to say helped SMU.
Very frustrating game.

I was at that game, it was pretty cool.
I would add the Florida State loss to the list. We had a two point lead late. They had the ball on the goal line and scored on third down. The bad part is the kicker missed the PAT. If we had held and they had tried a field goal, the kick would have been from about that spot.

Yes, that was 2012 in San Marcos (41-37) State. <Missed extra point for Jacks>
Jacks were down 17-41 midway through the 3rd quarter before SFA scored 20 unanswered points.
Gus scored 3 TDs with over 100 yards rushing (1 receiving) and Brady Attaway threw 3 TD passes, 2 to Cordell Roberson.
SFA had the ball with about 2:00 remaining starting at their own 9 and drove to the Texas State 44 yard line but turned the ball over on downs on 4th and 3.

Montana @ Oregon, 1993 - Coming off SDSU comeback #1, the Griz were still deciding on a primary QB & started Bert Wilberger over Dave Dickenson. Dickenson came in later & nearly led UM back from a 28-3 deficit, but the Griz fell 35-30. Story (https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=bG4VAAAAIBAJ&sjid=duoDAAAAIBAJ&dq=register-guard&pg=6669,2772979&hl=en)
Jacksonville St. @ Florida St., 2009 - It didn't really matter much for a Gamecock team on an APR postseason ban, but JSU still led 9-7 with a couple minutes left before the 'Noles got a go-ahead TD and a defensive TD to win it 19-9.

Season opener in 2008, playing at the Arkansas Razorbacks: http://www.espn.com/ncf/recap/_/id/282430008
We were up 24-21 against an SEC opponent with under 2 minutes left in the game. We had a chance to stop them on their final drive, but they went for it on 4th and 10 and made it and eventually picked up the game winning TD.
We've had times where we were able to stay close until around halftime, but usually the other team really gets moving in the second half when depth catches up to us and they pull away (like our game in '03 against then #11 and eventual national champion LSU: http://www.espn.com/ncf/recap/_/id/232560099)...but that one at Arkansas, we had a legitimate chance to win and we let them get back in it at the end.
That one still hurts.

I was at the Iowa--UNI game. It wasnt that they missed 2 field goals. It was the fact they had 2 field goal attempts blocked in a row. Same set of downs. It was 3rd down and they attempted the 1st one. It was blocked but didnt go past the LOS and UNI recovered. So now its 4th down and they get the attempt blocked again.

W&M @ UNC in 2004. Tribe was up 24-14 at half and 31-21 late in the third before Darian Durant completed a 3rd and 12 deep in UNC territory. End result of the drive was a TD and the Tar Heels never looked back -- final score was 49-38. A big tailback named Ron McGill rushed for over a 100 in second half alone and UNC frosh kicker then was current Denver Bronco Connor Barth.
W&M @ West Virginia 2013. Up 17-7 at half and wound up losing 24-17. Current Detroit Lion Jerome Couplin had a monster hit in this game and Tre McBride had a terrific afternoon as well at WR. Highlights below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aDRUJ9qUvA
What made these two losses so tough is the fact that, historically W&M has never beaten either WVU or UNC despite playing both more than 15 times.

You are way too kind. Pitt's TE's decimated FU's LB's and Safeties with late hits and cheap shots, causing injuries to key players. I was also there in person. It easily one of the top 5 most painful UNI games I have ever been in attendance for. Iowa was also ranked #22 at the time. We have a great kicker. Lining up to win the game. First kick gets blocked and I am devastated. Then see we get another opportunity. Hopes get raised only to have the second one blocked as well. The wound is still open and still painful.

SIU lost to Indiana 48-47 last year when the Salukis misfired on a two point conversion at the end of the game.
Then there was the loss to the Illini in 2013 when our QB managed to overthrow a 6-8 tight end on a fourth and goal at their 3 yard line with a chance to tie the game at the end of regulation.
Painful memories.

In 2010 against NIU who finished the year 11-2 we had the ball in the red zone and had a pass go off the hands of a WR in the end zone. It would have given us a chance to go for 2 and the win. We lost 23-17. Our team was not good that year 3-8 so this one wasn't so heart breaking as it was encouraging.
The next year we won the Great West and had a decent team, this one really stung. We had a close call against Derek Carr and Fresno St. They had scored on two bombs right away in the game but we fought back and just about stole the game. Our coach pussed out and didn't go for it on fourth and 2 with 3 min left in the game and we never got the ball back.

When I said decimated our secondary I meant physically (taking them out of the game literally) even though I didn't say it clearly.
Their absence two weeks later is one of the reason ASU's Williams had that unbelievable 32 for 36 day ( or whatever it was ) against us two weeks later.

Not that the Bison need any more love than what they've already earned on the field the last five years... but let that sink in just a moment. When the Bison are 8-3 against FBS (some of them dominant wins) and 2 of the 3 losses are heartbreakers that easily could have gone the other direction... Not bad.

To this day, I'd rather have NDSU down 4 than 3 with time running out because I've seen too many games that NDSU has lost trying to set up a FG - and this goes back to the 1980s (St. Cloud State game.)
Citadel v Wisconsin was a surprisingly good game even though the wrong team won.

UNI vs. Iowa State in 1987. If memory serves, UNI was up by 3 scores (maybe 19 points) with 5 minutes to go. 4 minutes and 90+ yards in "pass interference" penalties later, Iowa State takes a 1 pt lead. UNI doesn't give up and begins to drive the ball down the field. With time for maybe a play or two after this one, QB throws a deep ball to the TE at the 3. Cyclone safety drills the TE before the ball arrives and ball sails through the spot he had just occupied. No call. UNI can't finish the drive and loses.
UNI started the season 3-3 before destroying 6-0 and 4th ranked WIU on the road. They went on to win the conference before losing on the road to Stan Humphries and NE Louisiana in the semi-finals.

W haven't played many FBS games over the course of history but the two that stand out are Southwestern Louisiana (Now UL Lafayette) back in 96 and Eastern Michigan back in 2011.
We lost to Southwestern Louisiana 38-35 despite being up 35-17 and scoring two TDs that were called back due to VERY questionable calls. One was a offensive pass interference call that kept us from going up 42-17, and the other was a delay of game penalty in which the flag wasn't dropped until we crossed the goal line. That score would've put us up 42-24. So that day we got beat by the refs!
2011 vs. EMU we lost 14-7 despite out gaining them and getting into the red zone four times in the first half.

Another one that I'm not sure if it happened before or after their FBS transition is Georgia Southern losing to Georgia 26-20

They called Andy mink for the illegal block or whatever. But if you watch all he was doing was getting up off the ground and the UNL player tripped on him as he was getting up. That play would have completely changed that game. I remember how pissed the Husker fans were though. It was hilarious. Had about 15-20 of them tell us we won that game. Ugh. Woulda coulda and shoulda.
It's awesome to see our vaunted "flash" formation has sucked for half a decade now.

2005 Cincinnati 7 Western Carolina 3
Catamounts had a winning TD in the final 30 seconds called back by a holding call. The closest WCU has come to beating a FBS opponent.

Furman vs PITT was a tough loss but it falls to third in my book…
1986 Furman ties Georgia Tech 17-17 (should have won that game it would have made it two wins in a row against TECH)
1991 Furman loses on a final minute field goal by Scott Sission 19-17.
The 91 Yellow Jackets quarterback was Shawn Jones. Furman QB Hugh Swilling was hit fumbled and it turned the ball over to the Jackets.
Swilling was injured and the next week Furman played the Citadel with a wide receiver at QB losing that game in Chucktown and costing the Dins a playoff spot.
Recap of the game here:

No surprise that most posts include "questionable calls" by the refs. In FBS v. FCS games that is a constant, especially if the FCS team is playing it close or winning.
Both of the almost wins for JMU that sting have direct involvement by the refs. They did everything in their power to help the home team win. It's really pathetic and there'd be far more upsets if down to the wire moments weren't allowed to be influenced by the zebras.
I still don't understand how we were allowed to beat Tech in 2010 and they didn't manage to get heavily involved with ticky tack penalties.

I think what really happened on the TD play that was called back was that a WR didn't get up on the line where he was supposed to be and we had too many men in the backfield.

UCA has had a few heartbreaking games since our move to division I 10 years ago.
2014 Texas Tech 42- UCA 35 It was score for score in that one. They had it last.
2013 The Colorado state game was just 7 but an INT in the end zone ended our chances.
2011 Louisiana Tech 48 UCA 42 overtime. We had that game.
2009 Hawaii 25 UCA 20 So close. If Nathan Brown had another year it would have been a blowout.

In 2014 Alcorn lost to USM 26-20 but physically dominated them at their place and had 3 TDs called back (and some "questionable" penalties against Alcorn) despite having replay but not using it. That game played a role in Hopson landing the job at USM

Maybe not quite as close as their game against Iowa in '09, but UNI started out the 2012 season by traveling to Camp Randal and giving Wisconsin a scare, with the Badgers (ranked #12 at the time, went on to win the Big Ten that season) hanging on to win by 5.
