Furman K Jon Croft Hollingsworth.

Led the SoCon in average kickoff distance. Was 3 of 5 from beyond 40, including a 55 yard game winner against UCF. Virtually automatic inside 40 (6 of 7)

Doesn't have the numbers of some of his competitors as Furman's offense was just awful last year and rarely gave him the chance to put up points.

Your offense definitely did not help that much at all. Do you think it was a combination of things or was the OL pretty much the reason why in your mind?

Your offense definitely did not help that much at all. Do you think it was a combination of things or was the OL pretty much the reason why in your mind?

From a fan's perspective, offensive line is hard to really evaluate. I do think that the offensive line was a bit of a disarray when Fowler arrived at Furman. You see the last few seasons he has recruited the heck out of that position group.

My personal feeling is that Dakota Dozier masked a lot of problems. Easy to make your offensive line look good when your LT can collapse the defense nearly every play. After Dozier left, massive holes were exploited.

Just as an example, this was Triston Luke's game winning touchdown run against South Carolina State (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l68oWFEZiZQ).

You'll notice the RG (an all conference selection) pulls to his left and blocks precisely nobody. Now, I do not know where the play is designed to go (remember, SCSU had a monster DT that was a handful for anyone). Clearly, though, the play is designed to go inside and someone (either LG or RG) is supposed to be blocking the OLB #5. Nobody does. Luke makes an impressive athletic play seeing no hole to the inside, beats #5 (who was unblocked and darn near made the tackle for a loss) and scores the game winning touchdown.

That's just an example of the problems. Poor blocking led to a Herculean effort by our running back in a close game. While that play ended well for Furman, it could have (and many did) end disastrously. Occasionally the offensive line would put it together (second half against Samford), and you'd really see what the team is capable of.

Lot of new faces on the OL this year including some highly regarded recruits. If Furman is going to do anything, they need a heckuva lot better production out of that group.

A couple of Mercer players missing who have earned All SoCon honors in the past include Alex Lakes, RB and Robert Brown, TE. Both played injured last year and are back healthy. A healthy Lakes was SoCon rushing leader in 2014 as a Freshman.

A healthy Chandler Curtis will be competing for SoCon honors at WR.

Also Austin Barrett, DL has received previous SoCon recognition and a player to watch.

When the coaches did not pick Brown I figured maybe he was not fully healthy and went away from him. I almost put Lakes. There are a lot of good WRs. Had it been thin I would have gone ahead and put Curtis.

Lakes had 3 broken ribs and a punctured lung in game 3 last year and Brown played through a fractured toe after missing 2 games. Mercer arguably has 2 of the best 4 TEs and mostly run from a 2 TE set (TE plays H back).

When was the last time a running back was conference player of the year? It may have been recently - I don't remember.

If I had to guess, I'd give the preseason OPTOY to Hodges or Cobb. Both of those guys are QBs and run in offense where they are going to put up eye popping numbers.

Hmmm...you've said Preseason honors are primarily based on prior year's numbers & you propose Hodges as a viable Preseason OPOY, yet Mercer's QB, John Russ, put up about the same number of total yds, had 2x TD's responsible, and threw 1/2 as many INT's. No knock on Hodges - a really, really good player, who I would say salvaged Sammy's season in 2015 & a primary reason why I think Sammy will be 1 of the 4 SoCon Teams in the Playoffs this season. I'm not necessarily saying Russ would be my PS OPOY either. I just don't get how you can overlook him within the context of your suggestion/proposal. Perhaps, you are now postulating that preseason honors should be based on 'projections.' If that's the case, then I guess you would agree that Mercer's RB, Alex Lakes & WR/RS Chandler Curtis should merit much higher consideration than they have been given this preseason. Yes?

But if he went after interceptions the same way he went after iPads he would be a pretty good player for us. :D

You are confusing MY opinion with the COACH's poll.

All of this is entirely subjective. I have said that the best justification for some player over another is their 2015 production. That does not mean it is my entirely subjective criteria.

If you want to put Lakes as the top running back in your own subjective opinion poll, go ahead. He's a good running back.

Hodges and Russ may have had similar total yards, and Russ may have had more TD's and less int''s..but he also had a Full season of starts, not just a half, and also several of Hodges int's came in early season games where he was put in later, down in score, and tried to push to make things happen...just sayin'.........

Yep, all of that is certainly true - which is highly similar to the 'argument' that one can make for Alex Lakes, 1st Team All-SoCon RB in 2014, whose stats were a bit down in 2015 because of a significant injury incurred in Game 3, but he is back to 100% for 2016.

Just would like to see some consistency in the way these things are selected & the way people think about them. Either base the selections on most recent year's performance/stats OR base them upon projected performance in the upcoming season based upon a more broadly informed set of criteria, such as you laid out for Hodges.

Russ has the performance history & stats if the former was used to select the PS All-SoCon Team & Lakes should have been selected if it's the latter. In no event, should BOTH of them been omitted. I guess they'll just have to 'prove it' on the field in 2016...again.

I don't disagree with you. For the same reason, I think Duncan Fletcher is a significant omission at TE, as he put up pretty stellar numbers in 2014 but was slowed by injury in 2015.

At the end of the day, you ask 15 people their opinion, you'll get 15 different answers.

LOL - I guess so - they were consistent in naming Return Specialists to the Preseason All-SoCon Team in the past 2 years who had a COMBINED total of 5 kickoff AND punt returns for 38 yards and 0 TD's during the seasons before their selection. Well, at least they didn't put a Long Snapping Specialist in as an All SoCon Offensive Lineman this year as they did in 2015!

BTW, though, if I was a Catamount Fan, I wouldn't be complaining - graduate 1/2 of the starters and still have 10 selected to the Preseason All-SoCon Team. That's Ohio State and Alabama kinda talent respect right there! Looks like a dynasty is about to kick-off up in Cullowhee!!

If I remember correctly, that LS was a Samford player. Great career, and he will be missed this year. I have to agree, however, that it was a most surprising choice.

A coaches pre-season all-star team is a somewhat strange idea. Right now, the coaches are trying to figure out who the stars on their own teams are and mostly basing their choices on which players looked best playing against their team.

Do the coaches even cast votes, or do they delegate them to the AD's, SID's or H2O specialists.

I like the coaches teams though because they can''t vote for their own players. Media teams are just a compilation of a bunch of homer picks or guys looking at stat sheets and not seeing who had an impact on the field.
