If you put much stock into preseason lists then SHSU, McNeese, and Central Arkansas are the teams to beat. SFA, Nicholls, HBU are the cellar dwellers lol.

Hey I stated SFA is the darkhorse. Plus looking at that list I can see several players on other teams that dominate their positions..such as Harrington. But overall, not sure on everyone. Even someone on here said one of those on the list might not even be playing this year. xlolx

Golden even playing this season?

I'm beginning to wonder. Coach Guidry made a tweet (or a Facebook post- I don't remember) during the youth football camp with one of Golden's younger relatives sitting in front of Golden's locker. I don't think he would have done that unless he expects Golden back. Golden has done so well (off the field) here for two years since that big mistake he made at A&M and he cooperated fully in the investigation of the A&M incident. Really turned his life around. Seems like the judge might want him in a good structured enviroment here than in prison. So far, the Guidry tenure has been very tight lipped about a lot of things such as transfers, Golden's status, etc. So we will just have to wait and see.

SFA being a dark horse maybe a pretty good bet, as there are pieces in place to make a run.

As of right now…

On offense I feel pretty good about the Jacks as we return 95% of our offensive output that includes two 5th year seniors in QBs Zach Conque and Hunter Taylor.

Now 100% healthy (knee) Zach Conque 6-6; 240 had a great spring for the Lumberjacks followed by an invite to the Manning Passing Academy at Nicholls State. There he impressed many during his workouts as well as being a counselor. His passing skills caught the eye of Archie Manning who stated,

“Conque not only looks the part physically, but I was impressed with his set-up skills and accuracy with the receivers here.” “Every year there are about a dozen teams looking to upgrade the quarterback spot in the NFL and Zach’s an impressive young arm out there.”

Also at the Manning Academy was San Francisco 49er scout Oscar Lofton, who stated,

“My goodness Zach Conque is a big man and he can zip those throws in there in really small windows. I didn’t realize how mobile he was in the pocket . He can move around real well when pressure comes near him and he has strong set-up skills. This young man can play, but the pros put so much emphasis on your last at bat. His senior season will dictate where he gets picked, but he is gifted.”

Head Coach Clint Conque has said also that Zach has the physical skills to make it at the next level, with his quickness (for a big guy) 4.6 40-guy, fundamentally sound, sets up quickly, he has a quick release and he can put the ball in tight spots and has the ability to extend plays again with his speed.

Mike Detiller has Zach projected as a 6th or 7th round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

SFA returns three great running backs in senior Joshawa West 5-10; 194, leading rusher, CFPA National Freshman of the Year Finalist sophomore Loren Easly 5-11; 205 (now 100%, no knee brace) and sophomore Jacolby Whitaker 5-10; 194 for a three headed monster that combined for 222 carries 1,500 Yards and 6 TDs (6.8 YPC)

The offensive line took a hit in losing three starters, and return only seniors Anthony Pullins 6-3; 300 (2014 All-SLC) and Travis Wiggins 6-3; 305 who bring 62 games of playing experience combined at SFA.

All the receivers return, and with Conque at QB that will be a major plus for the Jacks with speed to boot in juniors Aaron Piper, Robert Sylvester, as well as size and strength in seniors De’Quann Ruffin 6-2; 200 and Justice Liggins 6-1; 210. On defense the Lumberjacks play a 4-2-5 formation and on the defensive front they lost three senior defensive tackles leaving questions in the middle with newly converted returning defensive ends (moved to the middle) with senior Darrell Vanerson 6-3; 290 and junior Mitchell Zimmerle 6-3; 285. Also returning at defensive tackle with experience sophomores Demetrion Amie 6-4; 275, Lamont Alexander 6-3; 300, Bubu Alvarez 5-10; 260 and Braxton Kelly 6-1; 290.

No doubts about who will be on the ends with the return of two of the conferences’ best defensive linemen in senior Kendrick Harrison 6-2; 246 and junior HERO FCS Defensive Player of the Year, and 2nd team All-SLC player John Franklin 6-4; 278. Together both combined for GP:55;TKL:134;SCK:16.5;TFL:32.5; FF:4;FR:1;PD:3 in their career at SFA. Also returning at defensive end, senior Jamal Allen 6-0; 246 with 33 games of experience.

At linebacker Jacks have two returning players in seniors Price Miller 6-1; 228 and George Stone III 6-1; 225. Miller was second on the team with 52 tackles including a season best 12 tackles against rival Sam Houston State. Both saw action in all 11 games earning 7 starts combined. Sophomore Ryan Woods 6-1; 220 is the only other linebacker returning with game experience at 3 games.

SFA returns the bulk of its secondary in starters Trevon Smith 5-10; 184 who started 5 games at cornerback as a true freshman. On the other side we have senior Tre Rosser 5-11; 185 with 5 starts who split time with now sophomore Tarrin Mitchell 5-10; 186 earning 4 starts. At safety the Lumberjacks return senior 2X All-SLC player Patrick Martin 5-9; 186, seniors Zack Starnes 5-9; 184, and Germod Williams 5-9; 178, as well as juniors Ahmad Muhammad 6-0; 196 and Marlon Walls 5-10; 196. The defense is very solid in the secondary with plenty of experience, but very green at the linebacker position when you get pass the starters. A toss up with the defensive front.

Last season the Jacks went 4-7 with two of those 7 losses by 6 points (SHSU/N. Ariz.) and one by 3 (ACU)

Looking at some of the preseason FCS projections, some writers have SFA finishing 3rd in the SLC behind SHSU and McNeese State.

Yes, until proven otherwise and what the Kats have returning, SHSU remains the team to beat.

Lake Charles American Press article on the All SLC teams says his sentence ended up being for 120 days and, if he is let out early for good behavior, he might be back as early as mid-August.

Lol I don’t know, thought we had it last season (that 14-3 halftime lead was feeling good as it was the first time that had happened since 2010); it seems to be in our heads now, as the Kats have our number in football.

Special teams was embarrassing.

It does seem to be the obsession of the team right now to finally win this game; the seniors want it really bad.

Except for 2011 it has been a very good game through the years and the Jacks do seem to be inching very slowly to maybe finally getting over the hump.

The Southland Digital Network will offer live coverage of press conferences throughout Wednesday’s event, beginning with Commissioner Tom Burnett’s opening comments and state of the league at 8 a.m.

One new addition to the format this season will include each of the student-athletes appearing on Facebook Live via the Southland Conference page at Facebook.com/SouthlandConference (https://www.facebook.com/SouthlandConference). Fans are encouraged to submit questions for the players early and have them answered live during Media Day festivities. Be sure to “like” the page to get live notifications.

In addition to the live coverage of Media Day, there will will be a two-hour Southland Conference Football preview show which will be broadcast on ESPN3 (http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index/_/id/2847696/2016-southland-football-preview-show), getting underway at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening. Coaches and student-athletes from all 11 Southland football-playing institutions will participate as the show will once again be hosted by Lincoln Rose, one of the play-by-play announcers for Southland football broadcasts on ESPN3.

As part of the Media Day festivities, the 2016 Southland Conference preseason polls will be revealed Wednesday morning as part of Commissioner Burnett’s 8 a.m. remarks.

I plan to print a copy of the preseason polls and compare them against the post season standings. Other than Sam at the top and HBU at the bottom, I have a hard time knowing how to rank teams. Too many unknown variables.

That's not unusual. Here's what I usually gather year by year. Remember UCA has only been title eligible since 2010 so I have a limited view of it.

There's usually ONE team that wins the conference at least two years in a row. McNeese for decades has been pretty dominant but Sam and SFA have made footsteps toward being top dog.

This year:
1. SAM
2. SFA/UCA/MCNEESE/
3. SLU/ACU/LAMAR
4. etc..


Honestly I think this is the easiest year for Sam to win the conference. UCA has 30+ freshman even though they are talented but all the tough games are on the road. McNeese is under a new coaching regime. The list goes on and on. After the top 5...man who knows.

The Kats have the most favorable schedule no doubt. AND of course they get HBU instead of SLU which that **** needs to change!
