Harvard is relatively quiet so far on the basketball side...

Haven't seen any schedule nor list for 2016-17 yet.

Uhh NDSU just announced a game at Arkansas. :\ It isn't the worst schedule in NDSU history, but it could be improved.

Rumor has it that Harvard is in the mix for a big time recruiting class. Time will tell...

Oh man I got to see this year's kids already and I'm super excited! UCA has been in turmoil from within the mens basketball program since moving to division I with bad coaches and even worse players. Though there have been some standouts on the team, overall its been disappointing. Our coach has now made the transition for us that was needed our first year and conference leader Jordan Howard will have a pack of ballers to help him. I'm ready for some basketball. If we can win 20 this year it will be a YUUUUUUGE improvement.
Watch out for a 7 footer named Vanover. Looks like he weighs 150lbs but has a sky hook like Kareem and an "up and under" like McHale. He also has the passing skills of a point guard. His younger brother, 7'3" and a senior this year I believe, is built like a house and plays strong to the rim...hope we get him too so we can have the twin towers!

#-Holy City Hoops Classic (Charleston, SC)

Went 9-9 in PL play last year (4th place out of 10) with a fairly young team. The program has been competitive under Matt Langel (starting year 6 in Hamilton), and I'd love to see another step forward this year xnodx

Wofford will have a young but talented team this season, our last in the outdated Benjamin Johnson Arena. There are a lot of freshmen and sophomores on the roster, some of which will be playing significant minutes. We are relly excited about these freshmen, but they're still, you know, freshmen. So I think we're a year away from actually competing for another NCAA berth but we should be fun to watch. I like seeing young players develop...problem is they will be up and down. We might upset the best team one night and lose to the worst team the next.

2017-18 is the season I'm really looking forward to- we open up the new Jerry Richrdson Indoor Stadium and we should have a very good team to open it with.

UCA gets a big commit: Let's see if he signs.

S.K. S-H-I-T-tu Commits to the University of Central Arkansas

The University of Central Arkansas picks up one of its biggest recruits in program history today, by landing a commitment from S.K. ****tu, who plays for Providence Academy, located in Rogers, AR. The 6’9” power forward is the 7th ranked player in our class of 2017 rankings. S.K. ****tu had offers from Houston, LSU, Tulsa, UALR, and St. Louis, as well as others. Huge grab for Russ Pennell and his coaching staff at UCA.

It's looking like my personal 2016-2017 season in-person schedule is coming into focus. Here are the games I'll probably attend this season (all times ET):

11/25 (Fri): Lehigh at Mississippi State, 8:00 PM
12/03 (Sat): St. Joseph's at Villanova, 1:00 PM (if I can make a deal with a Villanova fan on another message board that I've talked to)
12/03 (Sat): Penn at Temple, 4:00 PM (likely also would attend a Celtics/76ers game at 7:30 PM the same day)
12/10 (Sat): Lehigh at Mount St. Mary's, 4:00 PM
12/28 (Wed): Drexel at Penn, 4:00 PM
12/28 (Wed): Cincinnati at Temple, 9:00 PM
01/02 (Mon): Lafayette at Loyola (MD), 7:30 PM
01/18 (Wed): Lafayette at American, 7:30 PM
02/04 (Sat): Lehigh at American, 2:00 PM
02/04 (Sat): La Salle at George Mason, 7:00 PM
02/11 (Sat): Lafayette at Navy, 7:00 PM (could be replaced with a trip to Philadelphia that would include a SJU game and 76ers game)
03/04 (Sat): Villanova at Georgetown, 12:00 PM

That SJU/VU game (i.e. the Holy War) is the only one of the 10 Philadelphia Big Five matchups I've never seen in person. (If you expand the grouping to the City Six and include Drexel, St. Joe's/Nova is one of only 3 matchups I've not seen in person, along with Temple/Drexel and Villanova/Drexel.)

It is possible that I would forgo the 12/3 Penn/Temple game (and possibly the 12/3 Celtics/76ers game) if Villanova played a home playoff football game on the same day after the SJU/VU basketball game.

3 starters gone.

Going to be starting a true freshman at PG with a JUCO transfer as a back up

SG is a junior with a grad transfer and a redshirt freshman back up

SF is preseason MVC POY back up is a true freshman

PF is a junior and back ups are redshirt freshman

C is a junior with one junior and then freshman back ups

Noticing a trend?

Only 6 players have D1 experience. Now, the freshman (redshirt and true) are at a level UNI has never had. Once they develop this team will be scary good. The two true freshman that will play a lot this year are athletically already where Wes Washpun was last year, and one of them is 6'6. It's just a matter of them picking up the game.

UNI tips the Tire Pros Puerto Rico Tip-Off today on ESPNU. It's actually been moved to Orlando and the ESPN Wide World of Sports this year due to Zika and is now called just the Tire Pros Tip-Off

A win in the first game is vital. There are a couple name teams, and the rest will be RPI dregs. It's vital to avoid Tulane in the second game and draw Oklahoma.

Should UNI and Xavier both get to the title game it would be a unique situation where UNI and Xavier would play back to back games against each other as UNI and Xavier start a H/H this year. No matter if it's title game, third place game, 5th place or 7th place game (only time UNI/Xavier could meet) that game would be on the 20th. The next game for both is 11/26 @ Xavier with the return in Cedar Falls next season

Is not good

That win also will do almost nothing for the conference RPI. Especially because USD lost by 35 to Houston tonight. IUPUI lost by 25 toMarquette.

The conferences losses to Loyola Chicago, UNC Greenville, Wyoming and EIU the day before are also season long drags just waiting to happen

Good thing margin of victory means nothing in RPI.

That said the Summit has issues, SDSU still adjusting to a new coach who wants to run a very different system. They'll probably continue to struggle in non-conference before getting their act together in conference play....basically the worst case scenario for RPI.

ORU is also a complete mess and WIU is just plain awful.

1.Joke all you want about the officiating, but it was laughably bad...and not for UNI. UND wants to play a very fast and agreesive game. That means a ton of screens on offense, attacking the boards on missed shots, and very tight man to man defense. The officiating last night decided to ignore all hand checks and holds on UNI players as they tried to cut. There was a 4 posession stretch were UNI was called for a push on a rebound, and the person called had inside position and was boxing out while the UND guy tried to jump over him and ended up falling to the ground because he landed on the UNI player. The culmination of that frustration was a UND guy sprinting in from near midcourt on a missed shot and leaping for a rebound, missing the rebound, clipping to UNI players with his knees and elbowing a UNI player in the face. Not a single foul was called. I noted the officiating being an issue as the game was happening.

https://twitter.com/cdl1018/status/807776558257762304

1a. Hell, if you want to be truly honest the officiating lead UNI to win, not because it helped UNI, but because it ****ED UNI over early in the second half and lit a fire under Jeremy Morgan. There was a loose ball and he dove for it on the sideline near mid court. He saw it rolling out of bounds so he stopped himself and never got within a foot of it. A UND player kicked the ball, causing it to change direction. The ball was called OOB off of Jeremy. The ball never went OOB, it was never touched by Jeremy Morgan and it was kicked by a UND player....and UND got possession of the ball. It was at that point Jeremy Morgan decided to take the game over.

2. UND played well. UNI didn't. UND took advantage of that in the first half. Kudos to the them for that. UNI lost 3 starters from last year - a 3 year starting point guard, a 4 year starting shooting guard and a 2 year starting small forward. To replace those 3 UN is starting a true freshman at point guard, a redshirt freshman at shooting guard and a true freshman at small forward. The reason the redshirt freshman is starting at the 2 is because the normal starter is out with a sprained ankle. He's been out for 2 weeks and played sparingly last night to get back into the flow for Iowa and North Carolina. The true freshman starting at small forward is a combo of the regular starter hitting a rough patch and being disciplined for picking up 2 T's already this year. One was bull**** but the other was legit. He wasn't playing well and the second T moved him out of the starting line up. He's responded by playing better and the true freshman has played better. Our normal starting center has been out for 2 weeks with the flu. He played a tiny bit last night but it clearly still struggling with it. So from last year we are down 4 starters and even from 4 games ago we are down 3 starters.

3. Back to Jeremy Morgan. The reason UNI shot so many free throws is because of Jeremy Morgan. That bad call I referenced earlier happened with about 17 minutes left in the game. At that point Jeremy had 2 points (he had zero points in the first half). He got up from that call with a look in his eye like there was nothing going to stop him moving forward...nothing did. From that point on he scored 36 more points. He took his defender to school on every possession. Mid range jumpers. 3 pointers. Driving to the lane. At one point he was 2-8 from the free throw line...he came in 23-27 on the season. Yep. Jeremy Morgan outscored UND by himself in the second half 38-37. The 38 points in a McLeod Center record for points in a single game....and he did it in a half.

4. Expanding on the free throws and going back to officiating. J-Mo finished the game 16-22 from the line. Many of those free throws were either and 1 situations from blow byes or late in the game when UND went to "fouling to extend". Morgan alone shot 8 free throws in the final 1:33 of the game. UNI shot nearly half of their 35 free throws in the last 3 minutes of the game. At that point UNI had taken the lead and UND got more aggressive trying to get stops and rebounds. Their fouls became blatant and officials called them. Because of the way J-Mo attacked the defenders early in the second half UNI was in the bonus with 11 minutes left in the game. UNI shot 17 free throws in the final 5:41 of the game. If they weren't off of an AND 1 by J-Mo they were called on rebounds. I believe UND was called, correctly, for fouls on rebounds 4 times after UNI was in the bonus. That's 8 free throws simply because UND's rebounding method is to run as fast as possible towards the rim and jump through people and hope it isn't called.

5. Free throws a bit further: I wouldn't judge the free throw descrapncy from last night as one sided. I've already explained why but for years now UNI has ranked at/near the bottom of all of D1 in fouls called against and at/near the top of fouls drawn. I believe the last two seasons UNI has averaged more free throws made than the other team has attempted. UNI's entire focus is around defense. It's "legend" with many TV guys that UNI doesn't practice offense at all for the first two weeks when the season starts up. It's focused entirely around defensive rotations, proper positioning, close outs, playing off screens, etc...

6. UND played well, but UND is now 0-8 vs UNI since moving D1 and if these teams played 10 times this year with both teams healthy UND gets closer than they were last night maybe twice. UND shot 50% in the first half. UNI shot 30%. UNI also shot uncharateriscaly low numbers and % from 3 last night. UNI usually makes 11-14 3s per game. Last night UNI was 6-15.

I was more impressed with UND than I thought I would be. No doubt. They play fast. They play aggressive. There are play makers. I think one of them about got his neck reamed by Coach Jake early in the game right in front of the UNI bench, turned around and "mean mugged" the entire bench and staff as he passed them. That didn't sit well with Jake. I have heard that was addressed by the UNI staff with the UND staff through "runners". I don't know much about the Big Sky this year but I wouldn't be shocked to see UND at the top of it. I hope they are. All of the RPI/SOS help is appreciated. In the computers UND ranks a head of 2 of UNI's oppoentns thus far that UNI had lost too (George Mason and Wyoming) so it's looking like it will be a pretty decent win for UNI. I can see how they blew NDSU out. That system, and those players, can create runs real quick with how they do it.

I think SDSU has some serious issues with that new coach, if I was a fan I would have my torch and pitchfork out. A zone defense is fine for a change of pace but to run out that garbage defense for an entire game....I would burn my tickets if an NDSU coach did that.

If SDSU played any kind of defense in the second half they probably grind out the win.

That's all well and good, but the simple fact remains that in man to man we went 1-6 and are 6-3 in zone. I just don't think we have much talent on the team outside of Daum. With all the open looks everyone got in the second half and almost no production is ridiculous. Deep into the second half the only player in double digit points was Daum. You just can't win that way, and I think that Otz is trying to hide the talent deficiencies with the zone cause we're long.

I'm not going to get out a torch and pitchfork after one game for a new coach who had to try to replace an entire front court with jucos he had to pick up after they were pretty well picked over by other teams. It really hurts to lose that way, but to want his head after barely half a season is stupid. And it's not like he's and anti man to man guy. All the coaches he's worked with have been man to man teams. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he's sticking with the zone to get guys to fully buy in to playing it all in, and doesn't mind sacrificing a game or two early to get everyone humming by the end of the season. But I'm a glass half full guy with basketball cause it's my #3 sport anyways, so I could be way off. It's gunna get worse if we lose to USeD at the end of the week.

Well I do despise zone defense, if you want to win in the Summit I can't see it working. IPFW is going to torch you, they can shoot the three at a much higher level then we can. Our big adjustment to win the game was actually bringing in the walk on because he is a better shooter then Khy or Carlin.

I think as a coach you need to be flexible, you need to be able to play man defense at times because eventually teams will adjust. Especially when the teams are setting or getting close to setting school three point records against your defense.

The heat has really ramped up on Temple head coach Fran Dunphy after an 0-3 start to conference play. To make matters worse we lost by 24 to UCF in a game that was never competitive and by 14 to SMU in a game that wasn't nearly as close as the final margin might indicate. Dunphy is a great man and excellent ambassador of the university but he might be the most overrated coach in the history of college basketball. Since he's arrived at Temple we've been ranked less than 20 total weeks. We've never entered the season ranked. Our tournament record is terrible; 2 wins and zero Sweet 16s and embarrassing performances against Cornell and USF as a 5 seed.

Temple has a tremendous basketball history and by all accounts has the resources to be a Top 15 program like we were under Chaney. Unfortunately, Dunphy hasn't been able to recruit and develop the type of talent that's needed to be at the level. After a 20 loss season in 2013-2014, NIT in '14-'15, another 1st round loss last year and likely no postseason (9-7, 0-3) this year it's time for him retire or if need be fired. I wish it didn't come to this but barring some miraculous turn around it's time.

At least UConn fans will be free of Kevin Ollie before too long.

Tough loss tonight at home to Lehigh, but we did get wins at BU and home against Loyola.

Halfway through the PL season, looks like a tight race. 2 games separate 2nd and 7th.

Lehigh 6-3
Boston 6-3
Navy 6-3
Holy Cross 5-4

Loyola 4-5

Temple got a nice win over Memphis tonight. It was only our second win since December 22nd. We're not 11-10 overall and 2-6 in the AAC.

Lehigh's playing well! I tossed around going up to Hamilton for the game tonight but the weather wasn't great with all the fog.

NDSU keeps winning! The Bison, Dayton, Villanova, Butler, Valpo, Monmouth, Princeton/Harvard, Illinois State (they're an enigma, right Clenz?) and Bucknell seem to be the best FCS'ers with a chance to win a game, or more, in the tournament. 'Nova and Butler are legit Final 4 teams.

VCU allowed a go-ahead 3-pt FG with 0.4 seconds left in each of its last 2 games.

VCU won both games.

VCU won the first game because St Bonnie fans rushed the court early and got t'ed.
They won the second by having the inbounder run the baseline and the defender ran over the picker. Great call- a lot of refs don't have the guts to do it in that situation. I saw Iowa do that in an NCAA tourney game and they swallowed their whistles.

Speaking of Iowa- the Gophers beat them last night in the Barn in double OT.

2 tough losses for Colgate this week, blown out at Bucknell, then losing a heartbreaker to Boston at home. The Terriers led by as much as 24, but the Raiders rallied back to within 2 before falling by 1 (3 at the buzzer, game already lost)

7-8 in the league with just 3 to play. On the bright side, HC lost, meaning we're tied for 6th with them (though technically 7th with the tiebreaker). Downside, Loyola is winning, which would put them one game up on us both. All L's remaining on the schedule: at Loyola (Sun.), at Lehigh (Wed.), then finally home against Lafayette (Sat. 2/25)

NDSU has a very bipolar team this year. They could beat some very good teams when they are on but when they are not it's quite ugly. I'm not confident they can put 3 games together to go to the dance this year. Summit is down as a whole IMO. Much like most of college BB it would appear.
