Colgate lays an egg, nearly coming back but falling short at home to Lafayette. 4 losses in the last 5 to close out the regular season.
The Raiders finish in 6th, getting out of the first round. The downside is the result means a trip to #3-Lehigh on Thursday. We took two good beatings from the Hawks this year; is the third time the charm in Bethlehem?

The Summit League is as wide open as it has ever been since NDSU/SDSU became eligible for the tournament in 2009. I'd say #1, #2, #3, #4, and #6 all have decent shots to win it with none of those being better than 5 to 1 odds IMO. Any team could plausibly win it but WIU and IUPUI are too inconsistent and Denver is in a tailspin.
I'm not sure if Vegas puts odds on these mid-major tourneys but I'd handicap it something like this:
USD: 5/1
NDSU: 6/1
Omaha: 6/1
SDSU: 13/2
IPFW: 7/1
Denver: 14/1
IUPUI: 20/1
WIU: 20/1

Replace Temple with UNI and I'm the same.
I don't truly follow another CBB team - I do Louisville some but it's more of a "Are they good or not" type following at this point. I have a complete lack of interest in CBB this year.
My little bit of hope I'm carrying from this season is this:
1. This team is SOOOO young. At various times this year 4 freshman (2 true and 2 RS) started. A true freshman has been the starting PG all year. A true freshman SF has gotten decent minutes and started a handful of games. A RS freshman has started about a dozen games at SG. A RS freshman PF was very limited the first half of the season due to off season knee surgery but has been good since he came on. Between those 4 UNI has about 2,000 minutes played.
2. We lost our starting SG who spends a lot of time handling the ball as well about 5 games into the season to a real bad high ankle sprain. He is taking a medical this year and will have 2 years left with that young group to lead them.
3. We return all of our post players, who are really good when they aren't in foul trouble. If that fix that they are golden PLUS we are bringing in a kid that's 6'10 260lb center who is widely considered the second best prospect in the state (1st is Fran McCaffery's son that will go to Iowa). He's college ready and will add size and depth.
4. Last time we had a bad season we went 31-4 with a top 10 ranking the next year and made won at least 1 game in the NCAA tournament for the next 2 years.

Meh... you'd have a hard time convincing me that NDSU is any worse than Omaha, SDSU, or Denver. I would say NDSU finished on top of a pile of mediocre teams and have proven to be quite mediocre at times themselves this season. They've shot the 3 as well as any team in the conference which means that they'll have just as good of a chance of winning in Sioux Falls as anyone else. Of course it also means they can go cold and lose to one of those very mediocre teams.

‘Upper levels’ of American Athletic Conference looking at Wichita State’s potential
Officials at the presidential level at American Athletic Conference schools are discussing Wichita State’s potential attractiveness as a member, according to a report by Mark Blaudschun of TMG College Sports.
According to the story, American schools are looking at ways to increase the conference’s basketball strength. A scenario that adds Wichita State, Virginia Commonwealth and Dayton as affiliate members (without playing football) is a discussion topic. The story cites anonymous sources and offers no specifics regarding a timetable or plan for expansion.
“It has gone from an idea to a discussion at the upper levels, but far from a serious plan, but it continues to be a prime topic of discussion at conference meetings,” Blaudschun wrote on the subscription website tmgcollegesports.com. “According to several sources throughout the league, the American Athletic Conference is looking for a way to upgrade its rankings in basketball with an expansion blueprint focused primarily on Wichita State, but also including other higher profile basketball schools such as Dayton and Virginia Commonwealth.”
...
A year ago, Wichita State announced that consultants would evaluate the athletic department’s options for leaving the Missouri Valley Conference and adding sports, most prominently football. The football piece of that study appears to have faded from discussion.
Wichita State president John Bardo declined comment Thursday. Any move made by WSU, athletic director Darron Boatright has said, would include all sports.
People in the WSU athletic department decline to speak publicly regarding the issue, citing the sensitivity of the matter or their unfamiliarity with the process and the administration’s movements toward that goal.
Yet the possibility of leaving of MVC is taken seriously by multiple sources in the department, some of whom believe it to be a likely outcome. Others are much less certain. All say leaving the MVC for the American is the desired goal of the university and some have gone as far as to calculate travel expenses in a conference that stretches to Connecticut and Florida.
...
more on the link if you care
Spin that this is a non-story all you want. Maybe it doesn't happen for next year but it will be done by the time this years sophomore class graduates.
WSU has kept their hatred for the MVC about as secret as well as someone that is 9 months pregnant hides that fact. They have straight out disrespected everything about the MVC on multiple occasions with public statements by officials and coaches.
WSU will be in the AAC by 2019

**** Drake.
They haven't been ****, outside of one magic bull**** season in 08, in 7 decades. I'm not kidding. They haven't been good since my parents were toddlers. They were both born in '51. **** everything about Drake. Drake, and programs like Drake, are the reason Creighton and WSU are leaving the conference.
Drake refuses to do jack **** to get better - no spending money, not hiring good coaches, not paying coaches, not changing ADs who have hired multiple failed coaches.
Thursday night at the conference tournament is the 4 bottom teams playing to move on to the quarters. Fans call it the PIG (play in games). More fans call it Drake night, because Drake has only not been there once in like 15 years.
It's also been called "Private School Night" because many years it's Drake, Evansville, Bradley and Loyola there (Loyola being new to the conference).
These are programs that have their private school "We're better than everyone" bull**** attitude yet the don't spend the billions of dollars the brag about. They constantly drag the ****ing conference down every ****ing year.
Drake can ****ing rot in the IIAC at the D3 level for all I give a **** about. They are about as good as Simpson, Wartburg, Coe, etc... anyway.
Also, **** the Summit. **** programs like IUPUI, IPFW, UMKC, ORU and Denver.
The MVC needs to get off their bull**** agendas and go to 12 teams when WSU leaves. Add 3 of these 4 - NDSU, SDSU, Valpo and Belmont. No one from outside that list should be considered for the next 2 or 3 years.
I pray the MVC has something in place, but they don't because why would they? The bottom feeders (privates) hate that UNI, Creighton and WSU have run the conference for the decade - especially public schools with UNI and WSU. They are going to force the league offices to take the Big South approach we are talking about on that thread in the football forums - let the good teams go elsewhere so we don't have to deal with them and then add more ****ty teams.
****ing christ. I hate this conference.

And it's over. Raiders put together a strong showing at Lehigh, much better than their two RS matchups, but Colgate falls to end the season. Final record of 10-22, though much of that came from a tough OOC slate.
Only one significant player graduates, so lots of returning pieces from a young team. We played a bunch of close games, and with a little improvement, this could be a bit of a dark horse team for 2018. Hopefully some reinforcements show up as well in recruiting, but there is talent in this group. A little more consistency and they could earn themselves a home game in the tournament. From there, who knows?

The PL in general is a terrible basketball conference. Bucknell, Boston U and Lehigh at least try. Navy has a pulse every now and again. Everyone else for the most part are varying levels of bad. Holy Cross's whole athletic program seems to be a mess. I know Carmody road a magic carpet ride to the tournament last year but overall the Crusaders stink. Like football they lack athletes. Lafayette seems to suffer from the same problem. Football and basketball are God-awful. Maloney can't get the tide to turn in Hamilton (at least they have hockey). Army has been better lately but they've never been to the NCAA tournament. Loyola has been garbage since the joined the league.

As much as UNI and ISUr fans hate each other on here, the universities are very, very, similar. AAMoF they are "sister" universities and use each other for comps in almost all areas. I wouldn't bet against the two of them working together to work out a move (similar to how ASU and GSU moved) to ensure whatever conference they are in is a minimum of the MVC right now. Illinois State is paying a touch over $500K for their basketball coach and UNI is at a million. MSU pays over 600K. SIU 400K. That means they aren't leaving the MVC for a new Summit where the level required to strive for is lower.
I've already said, if the MVC was smart (and lord knows that's probably not true) when WSU leaves they will invite Belmont, Valpo, Murray State, and then one/both of NDSU/SDSU (which ever is most committed to dumping enough money into basketball to get to a base level of at least 375-400K for a HC. Try to form a midwest version of the A10. Which had they done that when Creighton left (or before) WSU wouldn't want to leave right now and Creighton may not have left.
We need to be willing to go above 10 teams (Which sucks but in today's world you need as many strong teams to get bids). We need to go to 12-14 teams and load up with all of the best programs in the midwest. Hell, invite SFA for all I care. We already have Dallas Baptist for baseball.

'You can stay home if you want, you'll be back when we make the NCAA next year'
No, eff you. You answer to us, you smarmy douche. Don't give us the 'board of governors' excuse and turn around two minutes later and taunt the Missouri State community. You work for us. You are a cancer killing our university and you need to be removed.

It has been an up and down frustrating kind of season for the Lumberjacks. Down in that we had so many opportunities to win our 5th straight regular season SLC Championship, and up as we are 11-4 since Jan. with still a glimmer of hope to making our 4th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
So now we turn our attention to Katy, Texas and the wide open SLC Tournament.

Nope, the USD thing to do is to whine about the conference not giving them the auto bid as the regular season champions.
Their fans are scared shxxless to play SDSU tonight, in front of a blue clad, likely 11,000 plus crowd. SDSU are finally hitting on all cylinders having adjusted to the new coach. And Daum is a freaking stud. My guess is, unless he just loves college ball, he plays one more year and declares for the draft.

And refs. Don't forget about their fixation on how many fouls get called on whoever SDSU is playing xlolx. Including complaining for Denver last night in spite of 23 fouls being called on SDSU xlolx.
Don't forget whining about not being able to get as good of seats as they feel they should be given their turn at if they happen to have a year they are excited about. Even though everyone has had the same chances. Admittedly, it's not fair for fans from a distance with the two year ticket packages, but for a team the same distance away as SDSU is it's really an invalid complaint of entitlement.
Oh and don't forget the unfairness of the tournaments location. Never mind that teams other than SDSU have won the tourney plenty of times (well, on the men's side anyways :D)I'm expecting that their next campaign will be for participation trophies and a lottery style drawing for the tournament bid xlolx
Are some of their complaints about fairness valid? Sure, to some extent. But they, and some bison fans, act as if the Summit just decided to bestow this great advantage on SDSU because, well because and it's not fair. Never mind that when it was bid on places like Fargo didn't even bid, and once it was in Sioux Falls the community and local fans actually supported it in droves. If places like Tulsa and Kansas City had supported the tourney like the Sioux Falls area had, then Sioux Falls would be able to have a death grip on keeping it. To put it into perspective on the success in Sioux Falls compared to other locations for outsiders to the Summit League, when the tourney first was held in Sioux Falls is broke the Summit Tournament attendance record with around 34,000 people attending the women's and men's games combined. In a crappy arena that literally had the buzzer get stuck on in a game. Last year, the women's games attracted a record of something like 35-36,000 fans. Think about that. In this location the women's tournament alone outdrew any prior locations total attendance for men's and women's games combined. Now, once UND joins the conference, I think Fargo would have a great chance of being able to have a real good turn out for the tournament as well. Though as far as I know the tournament would have to be held at the Fargodome, and apparently they are more excited about having some home show there than the SLT. Honestly if it was in Fargo I would bet that there would still be a pretty good SDSU following up there, better than what NDSU gets in Sioux Falls for sure. But that's the difference in the schools. SDSU is more into their basketball due to their programs history (unfortunately imo), and NDSU is more into their football. Do you think there would be any chance that NDSU would let something like the SLT for football (obviously there isn't really) NOT end up in Fargo? No way in hell. But I've rambled enough on this topic. Long story short, there isn't another location that will give the tourney near the atmosphere or success and support in the conference footprint outside of possibly Fargo, and Fargo doesn't seem to give a damn. I mean, the Summit has the 3rd highest attendance for their women's games IN THE COUNTRY. Over P5 conferences. And Sioux Falls is going to be incredibly difficult to rip it away from now, I saw that the tournament brought something like $11 mil into the Sioux Falls area. Good luck beating their bid.

You don't want a basketball tournament in the Fargodome, it is a very poor basketball venue. You can put 10k in there and it still seems cavernous and sightlines are pretty poor.
My biggest issue with the Summit tournament is that the championship game should be played on a Sunday. The league should be begging ESPN to move the game, pay them some money if need be. It is moronic to have a neutral tournament being played during the week, just a complete pain in the ass for fans that need to travel.

I bet FS1 would love to get access to more tournaments but our ESPN3 deal probably complicates everything. I just kind of wish the league would work harder on getting it moved, I asked Izzo about this a while ago and he made it seem like the league wasn't even really interested in trying which is a shame.
Especially now with UND coming into the league you could get a lot more fans traveling down to SF for a weekend tournament. I think having more visiting fans there would help kick the atmosphere up a notch.

I'm a branch manager for a wholesale supply house. We have our own fleet of trucks that, between the 4 branches, cover almost all of Illinois other than the St Louis and Chicago areas, most of the lower half of WI, and our branch covers essentially all of Iowa from I-35 east to Avenue of the Saints and then stretched from Missouri to Minnesota. I'd say an average day has my driver cover ~300-400 miles with stops all along the way.
I hate having to fight with traffic in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City metros. It can take 40-45 minutes just to get across town. I take the highways around the outside of town. Doubles, to triples, the miles but takes half the time of trying to get through town.

Eastern South Dakota is a basketball first area of the country. Throw in NW Iowa and SW Minnesota and it is basketball first and foremost. It was that way when I grew up in the 70's and 80's and it continues today. I recall playing in front of over 9,000 at the old 2 class State B tournament. And the SDSU v USD games have always been insane. Football for the two schools has never had the same type of rivalry feeling.
To give last nights attendance some perspective. I saw a quote today from UND's announcer on Midco sports on Twitter. The Summit League attendance for the SDSU V USD game last night was 11,235. Attendance at the entire Big Sky tournament in Reno last year, all sessions combined, 11,578. The Summit had almost 9,500 at the SDSU v Denver game on Sunday. Sioux Falls is not going to lose the SLT anytime soon.

Home games are played at the Bison Sports Arena (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bison_Sports_Arena) which is located on the NDSU campus in Fargo, ND. The team shares a conference rival with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Dakota_State_Jackrabbits). The Bison men's head coach is David Richman. On March 10, 2009 the Bison made their biggest comeback in school history with a 66–64 win over Oakland University to win the Summit League tournament championship and became the first team since Southwestern Louisiana (now Louisiana-Lafayette) in 1972 to advance to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship in their first year of eligibility.

#3 seed Lehigh plays #1 seed Bucknell tonight at Bucknell. Will be broadcast on CBS Sportsnet at 7:30 p.m. EST. Should be a great game. Both teams have strong big men with Bucky's current MVP of the PL and Lehigh's being the MVP past two years. Bison lost only three league games this year, but two of them to the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh has won a fair number of games at Sojka Pavilion, so should be a great atmosphere.

That was an extremely physical game! A few minutes before the Spring injury the one Gopher player got a bloody mouth after taking a shot from Ward. The Springs deal did not good. Shame because the Gophers have a the potential to make a run. This is their best team since '96-'97.

No doubt. That was the year that they officially didn't make the Final Four so I must have officially not been in Indianapolis for it.
I remember seeing the whistle blower on the plane when we flew to the Big Island Tournament in Hawaii at Thanksgiving of 1995. When her favorite player got kicked off the team she spilled the beans on how she had written term papers for the players. That was the end for Clem Haskins.

While Lehigh had the better players on paper, Bucknell showed they had a better TEAM. They moved the ball very well. Quick crisp passing with minimal dribbling. When Lehigh missed three layups in a row to start the second half, it was over. The body language showed as Bison hit a number of buckets in response to each failed attempt to blow the game open. Plus, Bucknell had a much deeper bench. Lehigh only had a bout two subs capable of playing. Felt sorry for Kempton. Played his heart out with a monster game, but no other support. I note is one of five finalists for the NCAA's best center award.

Big Sky finals today and UND is facing Weber St again. Is this the year UND moves past Weber St and into the NCAA tournament? We will see. They beat Weber St twice this year both home and away (first win by UND @ Weber).
Big Sky Tournament history for UND:
12-13 First year in the Big Sky
Semi-Finals Weber St 76 UND 74
Berry, Tresnak and a Fr named Bolomboy beat Troy Huff and A. Anderson
13-14
Finals Weber St 86 UND 67
Berry, Tresnak, Bolomboy and Fr. named Senglin beat Huff, Anderson, Nash and Fr. named Hooker at Ogden
14-15 - UND did not make tournament
15-16
Semi-Finals Weber St 83 UND 78 OT
Weber St was lead by Senglin and UND was lead by Q.
Senglin, who was a first team All-Big Sky selection along with Hooker, finished with 31 points and his game-tying three-pointer with 11 seconds to play in regulation forced the extra session that saw the Wildcats outscore the Fighting Hawks 19-14. Junior Quinton Hooker equaled his career-high with 38 points. This was a great game and I thought that UND was going to get past Weber St for the first time until Senglin nailed that 3.

I could see Syracuse being left out at this point. They are right on the edge. I'm a Temple alum but grew up a huge Syracuse hoops fan. I've spent many cold winter nights traversing the 2 hour drive to the Carrier Dome.

I fully believe they had trouble scheduling good teams because nobody wanted to schedule them, yes, but ISU's resume was not impressive, especially in a down MVC.

was rejected by every one
And that's his point exactly, selection committee looks at your schedule, but if no-one will schedule you, there's not much you can do
MVC has a 60% home win% against "power" conference programs, that doesn't help the scheduling
This year, InSU went to Hinkle Fieldhouse and beat a very good Butler team
Scheduling has always been a problem for MVC, and I think will continue to be

Not only does the MVC struggle to get good home games, we struggle to get quality road games. I'm not talking games against top 10 teams. I'm talking road games against RPI 50-130 teams that would be "power conference" teams.

UNI isn't having that problem. UNI is enough of a name to sell to places as a high mid major. UNI fans travel well (because Iowa is ****ing cold in November and December). UNI is also competitive so the idea of a possible upset in November is "okay" to sell because UNI (outside of this year) isn't going to hurt your RPI. Even if you beat UNI they will only help you.

-Field with UNI was Arizona State, Clemson, Davidson, Mizzou, Oklahoma, Tulane and Xavier. UNI got second. ISUr is in it next year with Boise State, Florida State, Iowa State and then garbage, but still a good RPI field if bracketed correctly for ISUr.
2015 Diamond Head Classic
- UNI, New Mexico, BYU, Harvard, Oklahoma, Washington State, Hawaii
2014 Cancun Challenge (UNI won)
- UNI, Miami, Virginia Tech, Northwestern, then a few teams that played only in the states and didn't matter...
2013 Paradise Jam
- UNI, Loyola (MD), Maryland, Providence, Vandy, La Salle, Marist, Morgan State
2012 Battle for Atlantis
- UNI, Louisville, Missouri, Standford, Memphis, VCU, Duke, Minnesota
I can't say that's the case across the board though.

What did UND give Northern Iowa for a home game? It was like a 2 for 1 or even a 3 for 1, I think. Want to talk about not being able to get home games, try running a program in Grand Forks.
UNI has played in Grand Forks 3 times...including last season.
2009/2010
@ UND 64-41
2010/2011
@ UNI 65-52
2012/2013 played twice
@ UNI 72-46
@ UNI 77-66 (CIT)
2014/2015
@ UNI 64-52
2015/2016
@ UND 97-51
2016/2017
@ UNI 78-70 (this was a buy game)
I believe the set up has been a 2/1 and then a H/H and then a buy game.
The difference is UND is hurt from a lack of home games but it doesn't hurt their post season chances.
The MVC is completely ****ed when it comes to NCAA bids/seeding by the set up.

If UNI wanted to bend UND over they would have said 3-1, your home game last, small buy out and then bought the game out.
or
You play here once for a small amount and that's it
What UNI did was "Hey, let's do a 2-1 and we will even give you the home games first so the buy out isn't needed"
UNI bought SDSU this year
UNI bought SDSU a few years ago
UNI could have treated you how they usually treat Summit, MEAC, Horizon, etc.. teams. "Here is about 50K. Come play us in Cedar Falls and then get out of town.". UNI is actually much more diplomatic with how we schedule, because of how hard it is, but you get the idea.
