Joe Bernard enters his third season at UAlbany in 2016. After serving as the offensive coordinator and running backs coach in 2014, Bernard has also added assistant head coach to his title for this season.


In his first year at UAlbany, Bernard oversaw running back Omar Osbourne who earned second-team All-CAA honors and finished his career ranked third all-time in the program archives with 3,229 career rushing yards.


Bernard came to UAlbany with 11 years of experience as a defensive coordinator at the FCS level, as well as hefty high school and college head coaching experience. Bernard began his coaching career at Nazareth Area High School in Pennsylvania where was on staff from 1985-1996, helping lead the squad to four league championships and two district championships. As the head coach (1990-95), he compiled a 37-28-1 record.


From there, Bernard joined Fairfield University’s coaching staff from 1996 to 2002. Serving as the defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator, the Stags captured the 1998 MAAC Championship. Bernard was elevated to the position of head coach for the 2001 and 2002 seasons.


In 2003, Bernard joined Gattuso’s staff at Duquesne as the defensive and special teams coordinator. During his seven-year tenure, the Dukes won a Mid-Major National Championship, had the top ranked defense in the FCS, and won five straight MAAC titles (2003-07). Bernard met up with Gattuso again as a member of the University of Pittsburgh staff from 2009-11. As the strength assistant, Bernard helped the Panthers to an 18-8 record, two bowl victories, and a 2010 Big East title.


Bernard came to UAlbany after three seasons in


the high school ranks. The head coach at Stroudsburg High School, Bernard led his team to a 19-5 record across the 2011 and 2012 seasons, as well as back-to-back conference championships. In 2013, he was the offensive coordinator for Carolina Forest High School in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Gabe Luvara enters his third season with the University at Albany in 2016, moving from tight ends coach to quarterbacks coach, and will also assist as offensive coordinator.


Instrumental in developing the Great Danes’ passing game in 2014, Luvara worked with tight end Brian Parker who earned third-team All-CAA honors, as well as signed an undrafted free agent deal with the San Diego Chargers.


Luvara came to UAlbany after four seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Frostburg State University football program. Under his direction, the Bobcats made huge strides on the offensive side of the ball, improving over 130 yards per game from his first season to his second, averaging 376 yards per game and 32 minutes of possession per game. In addition, the 2011 Bobcats threw for 2,234 yards, the fourth most yards in a season in school history, tossed 15 touchdowns, fifth best in school history, and ran for 1,528 yards, the most since 2002.


Prior to Frostburg State, Luvara spent three seasons as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Ithaca College. While with the Bombers, Luvara helped the team to two NCAA Playoff appearances and a 24-8 overall record. His offenses ranked in the top 30 in the nation in total offense (26th in 2007 and 25th in 2008), scoring offense (20th in 2008), pass efficiency (29th in 2008), turnover margin (24th in 2009) and fewest turnovers (8th in 2007).


In 2008, Luvara’s offensive line was selected by the Empire 8 as the conference’s player of the week, marking it the first time in the league’s history that a weekly award was given to a unit and not a individual player. A total of 18 offensive players were named to the Empire 8 all-conference teams under Coach Luvara’s leadership.


Prior to spending 2005-2007 at Juniata College, Luvara was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Duquesne. Alongside Head Coach Greg Gattuso, he helped the Dukes to the 2004 MAAC Title and a 2003 IAA Mid-Major National Championship.


From 2002-03, Luvara served as a graduate assistant for the University of Louisville, handling scouting reports, running scout teams and assisting the offensive staff. The Cardinals posted 16 wins and a pair of GMAC Bowl appearances during his tenure.


Luvara, a 2001 graduate of Indiana (Pa.), was a four-year member and All-PSAC center for the team and helped IUP to three NCAA Playoff appearances from 1999-2001. He earned his M.S. in Exercise Science in 2008 from the California University of Pennsylvania.

Aaron Smith enters his fourth season on the University at Albany football staff in 2016, serving as recruiting coordinator, pass game coordinator, and wide receivers coach.


Under Smith’s direction in 2014, Josh Gontarek was named the CAA Offensive Rookie of the Year, boasting the best freshman receiving numbers in program history with 58 receptions, 687 receiving yards, and eight receiving touchdowns.


Smith, a native of West Point, N.Y. and son of an Army colonel, brought seven years of collegiate coaching experience to UAlbany. He spent the 2012 season leading the wide receivers at Boston College where he helped junior Alex Amidon develop into one of the ACC’s best. Amidon’s 1,210 yards receiving at the end of the regular season ranked second in the ACC, just four yards behind the leader.


Smith spent the five seasons prior (2007-11) as the receivers coach at Columbia University, coaching two All-Ivy League honorees, including Austin Knowlin, Columbia’s all-time leader in receptions (210) and receiving yards (2,484). Smith also served as the Lions’ recruiting coordinator in 2011.


Smith started his coaching career at the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2006.


As an undergraduate, Smith played football at both the University of Maryland and the University of Connecticut, helping his teams to appearances in the Peach, Orange, and Motor City Bowls. While competing at UConn, he was presented with two Scholar Athlete Awards, and graduated with a degree in political science in 2006.


Smith and his wife, Kristin, reside in the Capital Region with their daughter, Mia, and son, Cash.

Jim Sweeney, a 16-season veteran of the NFL, enters his third season as UAlbany’s offensive line coach in 2016.


Under Sweeney’s direction in 2014, left tackle Kevin Malloy earned third-team All-CAA honors. The offensive line protected quarterback Will Fiacchi, allowing him to break the program’s single-season passing record (2,636 yards) and career passing record (7,150 yards).


Sweeney was a four-year standout on the offensive line at Pitt (1980-84) where he earned a B.S. in sociology and administrative justice. A second round pick in the 1984 draft, Sweeney was named to the All-NFL Rookie Team after his first season with the New York Jets. Playing 11 seasons with the Jets with 158 consecutive starts, Sweeney was named to the All-Time Four Decades Team and is still referenced as one of the most consistent centers in franchise history. Sweeney also played one season with the Seattle Seahawks and closed his career with four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.


From 2000 to 2002, Sweeney was a member of Gattuso’s staff at Duquesne where he coached the offensive line that helped produce two 1,000-yard running backs in a pass-oriented offense. Sweeney then went on to coach eight seasons at the high school level in Pennsylvania.


In the summer of 2010, Sweeney served at the offensive line stand-in coach for Russ Grimm and the Arizona Cardinals before participating in the NFLP/NCAA Coaching Internship Program at Frostburg State University in 2011. Sweeney came to UAlbany after spending 2013 as an offensive line consultant for the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League.

Nate Byham enters his third season at UAlbany in 2016 after competing for three seasons as an NFL tight end.


Before being named tight ends coach in 2015, Byham served as a volunteer assistant for UAlbany in 2014. He mentored senior tight end Brian Parker who earned third-team All-CAA honors, as well as signed an undrafted free agent deal with the San Diego Chargers.


Byham, a sixth round pick (182nd overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, battled in 29 NFL games, playing 14 games, including three starts, with the 49ers before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.


While Greg Gattuso was on the coaching staff at the University of Pittsburgh, Byham was a three-year starter for the Panthers (2006-09), seeing action in 48 games with 36 starts. Byham served as a team captain during his senior season, also earning All-Big East honors after starting 12 games and catching 10 passes for 108 yards. As a junior, he recorded 20 catches for 260 yards in 12 starts and was named first- team All-Big East.


Byham attended Franklin High School (Franklin, Pa.), where he helped lead his team to three district playoff berths as a three-year starter, seeing action at both tight end and linebacker. He was considered the nation’s top prep tight end by Scout.com and was named first-team All-State, All-Region, All-District and All- Conference after recording 45 catches for 883 yards and a school-record nine touchdowns as a senior. Was also an all-star performer in basketball, helping Franklin win the state AAA championship in 2006.


Byham and his wife, Erica, married in July 2012.

Entering his 21st season as a member of the Wildcat coaching staff and 17th as the team's Offensive Coordinator is Sam Venuto. The highly regarded Venuto is recognized as one of the top offensive coordinators in FCS Football. During the Venuto era, the Villanova offense routinely ranks high in both the CAA and NCAA in a number of offensive categories.In addition to handling the Offensive Coordinator duties, Venuto also coaches the Villanova quarterbacks and is responsible for recruiting Central Pennsylvania. During his first four seasons on the Main Line, Venuto coached the Villanova wide receivers.
Last season, Venuto led the Villanova offense to 37.7 points per game, 470.4 yards of total offense per game and 242.9 rushing yards per contest. The Wildcats led the CAA in scoring offense and rushing yards per game and were 8th in the country in rushing yards per game and 12th in points per game.
Under Venuto's tutelage last year, junior quarterback John Roberson won the Walter Payton Award given to the top player in FCS Football, in addition to being the CAA and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year. Robertson becomes the fifth player to earn conference player of the year honors under Venuto's guidance. In 13 games a season ago, Robertson completed 197-of-301 (65.4%) for 2,846 yards with 35 touchdowns and just three interceptions to go with 227 carries for 1,078 yards and 11 scores.
Venuto has now helped lead three different players to the Walter Payton Award. In 2001, running back Brian Westbrook earned the Walter Payton Award as he amassed 2,823 yards of all-purpose offense in Venuto's offensive scheme. As the team's receiver coach in 1997, Venuto guided wideout Brian Finneran to numerous awards including ECAC Offensive Player of the Year, Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and the Walter Payton Award. Finneran tallied 96 receptions for a school-best 1,389 yards and a school-record 19 touchdowns as a senior en route to becoming the all-time leading receiver in Villanova school history.
In 2012, Venuto helped Robertson earn national recognition as he became just the fifth Wildcat in school history to rush for 1,000 yards when he ran for 1,021 yards and 14 scores. He also completed 152-of-253 for 1,965 yards and 14 touchdowns. For his efforts in 2012, Robertson won the Jerry Rice Award which is given to the top freshman in FCS Football. In addition, he earned the CAA and ECAC Offensive Rookie of the Year Awards and was a third team All-CAA honoree.
For his efforts in 2009, Venuto was named a finalist for the National Coordinator of the Year after his offense led the CAA in three different offensive categories, including scoring offense (30.8 ppg.), rushing offense (194.9 yards per game) and passing efficiency (149.9). During the 2009 campaign, Venuto led seven players to All-CAA distinction. The offensive headliners in 2009 were Matt Szczur who was named the CAA Offensive Player of the Year, and quarterback Chris Whitney who garnered first team All-Conference honors. With Robertson being a first team honoree last year, Venuto has now mentored four different signal callers to first team All-League distinction.
Venuto has a wealth of coaching experience. Before Villanova, he was the tight ends coach and the head junior varsity coach at Cornell University. From 1989-1993, Venuto was the passing game coordinator and receivers coach at Southern Illinois University. During the 1988 season, he was the assistant quarterback coach and receivers coach at the University of Illinois. Venuto spent three seasons (1985-87) as James Madison's quarterbacks coach and one year (1984) as the linebackers coach at Colby College. His coaching career began in 1982, when he was the freshman offensive line and linebacker coach at his alma mater, the University of Delaware.
While at Delaware, Venuto was a linebacker for the Blue Hens and was a member of the 1979 National Championship team. Venuto owns a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from Delaware and a Master's Degree in Education from James Madison.
Venuto and his wife, Diane, reside in Collegeville, Pa. with their 19-year-old daughter Amanda, and 16-year-old son, Ricky. Amanda is currently a sophomore at the University of Delaware.
