Sam Houston State Road Games

*field house to stadiums using google maps*
*mileage and time are one-way*

9/17 Lamar - Beaumont, TX 121 miles 2:08 (hours:minutes)
9/24 Houston Baptist - Houston, TX 79 miles 1:15
10/1 Stephen F Austin - Houston, TX 77 miles 1:12
10/8 Incarnate Word - San Antonio, TX 220 miles 3:46
10/22 Nicholls - Thibodaux, LA 345 miles 5:38
11/12 Northwestern State - Natchitoches, LA 183 miles 3:17
Total Round Trip - 2050 miles 34:32

My personal round trip travel from my home (near Houston Baptist) to all games, including 5 home games, is 2524 miles and 41:48. I plan to attend all games but I can see myself missing one or two.

This is a very favorable road game schedule for me. Beaumont sucks and I've never made the trip to Thibodaux but everywhere else will surely be legit. The Houston games will be convenient and close for me. San Antonio will make for a great weekend. Thibodaux is fairly close to New Orleans or an easy stop in Lake Charles to gamble on the way home is possible. Natchitoches has a nice little entertainment district near the river. Halfway between my home and Natchitoches is a horsetrack, casino and hotel. Lots of great weekend possibilities.

What are you and your team facing this season?

UD's away games (one-way):
9/10 - Lafayette - Easton, PA - 109 mi. - 1:50
9/17 - Wake Forest - Winston-Salem, NC - 440 mi. - 6:47 (likely flight)
10/1 - James Madison - Harrisonburg, VA - 227 mi. - 3:33
10/15 - William & Mary - Williamsburg, VA - 254 mi. - 4:00
11/5 - Albany - Albany, NY - 276 mi. - 4:19
11/12 - Richmond - Richmond, VA - 210 mi. - 3:23
Total Round Trip: 3032 mi. - 47:44
JMU is least likely to be influenced negatively by traffic on 95 corridor though.

If I could do all games (unlikely due to school and work commitments; round trips):
Home -> UD: 259 mi. - 4:18 (*5 = 1295 mi. - 21:30)
Home -> Laf: 52 mi. - 1:06
Home -> WF: 1025 mi. - 16:31 (guaranteed not going due to commitment)
Home -> JMU: 601 mi. - 9:18
Home -> W&M: 762 mi. - 12:02
Home -> UA: 346 mi. - 6:08
Home -> UR: 674 mi. - 10:49
My Total: 4755 mi. - 77:24

If I were able to do all 11 games, I think I'd end up with over 240,000 on my odometer by the end of the season, so it might be a good thing I can't go to W-S

My house to Homer Bryce Stadium = 193 miles. *5 home games and then *2 for return puts me at 1930 miles for our home games

another 90 miles round trip for botpw

another 100 miles for SFA vs HBU

585 to Lubbock, so 1070 round trip

165 to Mcneese, so 330 round trip (actually lake Chuck bound next weekend)

337 to Thibodoux, so 674 round trip

248 to incarnate word so 496 round trip

grand total: 4,690 miles.

Not so sure I'll be making all of these

If I were to drive to all 5 away games, it would come out to 9,174 miles round trip.

I know I won't make it to most of the away games, but for comparison:

One way, Bozeman to:
Moscow, ID 451 miles, 7 hr: 8 min
Sacramento, CA 937, 14:17
Ogden, UT 375, 5:54
Cedar City, UT 659, 9:43
Missoula, MT 203, 3:05

Total=2,625, 40:7 One way
5,250, 80:14 Round Trip

This would be a good year to go to all of the away games. We get UND at home (806 miles one way), NAU at home (926), UCDavis at home (951) and don't play PSU (750), Cal-Poly (1,248), or UNC (649). Probably one of the longer road trips for anybody this year is when Bryant comes here for non-conference (2,360).

June 16th, 2016, 03:53 AM
9/3 Air Force, Colorado Springs CO 638 miles, 9:36
9/17 Houston Baptist, Houston 355 miles, 6:05
9/24 SFA, Nacodoches 342 miles, 5:22
10/15 Sam Houston, Huntsville 340, 5:00
10/29 McNeese, Lake Charles, LA 511 miles, 7:48
11/12 Southeastern LA, Hammond 652 miles, 9:34

Total: 2838 miles x 2= 5676 rt

I will probably only make it to a couple of away gams. Colorado Springs and a one or two others. The tailgating at McNeese comes with high praises, and I have never been to SFA. Colorado Springs is a great place to spend a few days.

All you guys with these massive ass conferences....

This is from our house, not the UNIDome? Okay

UNI home games
64.0 miles - 57 minutes (south of Cedar Falls)

OOC games
Iowa State - 121 miles one way - 2:00 hours
Eastern Washington - 1,569 miles - 22 hours 56 hours

Conference games
South Dakota - 307 miles - 4 hours 48 minutes
Youngstown State - 634 miles - 9 hours 41 minutes
Indiana State - 360 miles - 5 hours 41 minutes
Western Illinois - 161 miles - 2 hours 38 minutes

Youngstown State is essentially every other MVFC road game this year on it's own...SMH

Other conference teams from my house
North Dakota State - 513 miles - 7 hours 30 minutes (can be MUCH faster when you have to piss and you've already passed Minneapolis and St Cloud. There's nothing that final 3 hours to stop at...can also be 9 hours if you hit Minneapolis at the wrong time)
South Dakota State - 411 miles - 6 hours on the nuts more or less
Missouri State - 415 miles - 6 hours 35 minutes (4 miles further than SDSU but over a half hour longer because Missouri sucks as a state)
Southern Illinois - 400 miles - 6 hours 26 minutes (11 miles shorter than SDSU but a half hour longer because you have to go through Missouri...which sucks as a state)

Montana is playing at UNI this year...so my house to WaGriz is
1,356 miles - 19 hours 39 minutes

Essentially NDSU and YSU really screw the conference foot print.

I will attend all Villanova games this season.

6 home games: 46 miles 1h 7m (46x2x6=548 miles; 67minsx2x6=804 mins.= 13h 24min)
@Pitt: 331 miles 5h 15m (331x2= 662 miles; 315minsx2=630mins= 10h 30m)
@Lafayette 44 miles 1h 2m (44x2 =88 miles; 62minsx2=124mins= 2h 4mins)
@Elon 477 miles 7h 39m (477x2 =944miles; 459minsx2=908mins=15h 18m)
@Richmond 288 miles 4h 52m (288x2 = 566miles; 312minsx2=624mins=10h 24m)
@Maine 512 miles 8h 29min (512x2 =1024miles; 509minsx2=1018mins=16 h 58m)

totals:
miles: 548+662+88+944+566+1024=3832 miles

time: 804+630+124+908+624+1018= 4108 mins. 68 hours 38 mins.

I'm pretty lucky this year with all our OOC games being in-state (at Eastern IL, home against Northern Arizona, and at Northern IL).

Here's what we're looking at in terms of travel (all distances from Hanson Field to opposing team's stadium):
@Eastern Illinois (Charleston, IL) - 3h 26m, 194 miles (fastest route, although there's a 178 mile route that would take ~5 minutes longer)
@Northern Illinois (DeKalb, IL) - 3h 2m, 185 miles
@Missouri State (Springfield, MO) - 5h 20m, 325 miles (team might fly to this one)
@South Dakota (Vermillion, SD) - 6h, 52m, 447 miles (team will most likely fly)
@Southern Illinois (Carbondale, IL) - 4h 36m, 254 miles

As for home games for me personally, house to parking lot is a ~1.3 mile drive (I can literally walk to the stadium in under 15 minutes), so there's not much point in me calculating my driving for home games. I plan on going to the EIU and NIU games, and depending on schedule and stuff, I might try to go to the SIU game.

Travel for the team (round trip, if they were driving to all) - 2,810 miles
Travel for my likely games (round trip) - 768 miles, 13h 6m of driving time

Next year we have (currently scheduled) a game at Northwestern, so at least one in-state OOC away game then too (probably take the train up for that one).

Home to Bob Ford Field - 11.4 miles, 19 minutes

UB Stadium, Buffalo - 285 miles, 4:16
Meade Stadium, Rhode Island - 199 miles, 3:18
Alfond Stadium, Maine - 414 miles, 6:17
Villanova Stadium, Villanova - 255 miles, 3:49
Cowell Stadium, New Hampshire - 238 miles, 3:47

Total round trip if I made them all (which I won't) 2920 miles, 44:48

The Blazers group always contends that they travel the most out of any NBA team, but our road trips this year aren't so bad. Actually, we're probably going to BarneyBus everywhere except SUU (and probably fly in to Vegas, then bus).

Here's PSU road list:

San Jose State (San Jose, CA)---662 miles
U Washington (Seattle, WA)---175 miles
Southern Utah (Cedar City, UT)---if driving all the way, 1017 miles. Flying, 2hrs to Vegas, 138 miles on the road.
Weber State (Ogden, UT)---736 miles
UC-Davis (Davis, CA)---574 miles
Sac State (Sacramento, CA)---586 miles

It sure would be nice for the team if they could work something out those last two road trips as we go to Davis, come back to Portland, then go back to Sacramento the following week.

3650 total road miles (one way).

So for all away games:
Iowa State: 220mi 3:14
EWU: 1456mi 20:32
USD: 185mi 2:44
YSU: 905mi 13:25
ISUb: 629mi 9:11
WIU: 398mi 6:08

So if I went to home and away games it would be: 5323mi 57:39

South Dakota State's away games this year:

@ Texas Christian ------ 886 miles, 12 hr 50 min
@ Southern Illinois ----- 764 miles, 11 hr 19 min
@ North Dakota State -- 188 miles, 2 hr 41 min
@ Illinois State --------- 639 miles, 9 hr 4 min
@ Northern Iowa ------- 349 miles, 5 hr

I usually get to one away game a year. Not sure which one it will be there year.

Distance from my front door to my big screen = 268 ft.

Sorry, the kids are too young to enjoy it, plus soccer practice, etc., and the wife is not a fan, so at best, I'll make maybe two games in person. Though I'll watch every one.

I'm moving halfway across the country, so Colgate games are probably out the question. Richmond looks like the closest, clocking in at about 1400 miles.

Probably close enough to swing a TCU game or two though...

Illinois State (at Fargodome) = 231 miles (3 hours 24 minutes)
Missouri State (Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex Springfield Missouri) = 610 miles (9 hours 7 minutes)
South Dakota State University (at Fargodome) = 231 miles (3 hours 24 minutes)
Western Illinois (at Hanson Filed Macomb Illinois) = 433 miles (6 hours 37 minutes)
Northern Iowa (at UNI-Dome) = 227 miles (3 hours 27 minutes)
Youngstown State University (at Fargodome) = 231 miles (3 hours 24 minutes)
Indiana State University (at Fargodome) = 231 miles (3 hours 24 minutes)
University of South Dakota Vermillion South Dakota (at Dakota Dome) = 302 miles (4 hours 42 minutes)

3269 miles (a little over 49 hours drive time)

Other sites;
Frisco Texas (Toyota Stadium) = 934 miles (14 hours 2 minutes)

I shutter to think how the mileage is for some of the Big Sky teams.

I think this helps MVFC attendance as well.

Fans from all schools tend to travel real well - at least to CF being right in the middle. It's only about 5 hours (or less) or so to most games. Few MVFC teams play games before 1PM local time, and I can't think of any 11 AM or noon kicks in conference games. That gives plenty of time to leave in the AM, get to the game, stay the night and head home next day and not lose the entire day on it.

If I add in 6 home games (which I should make all of) at 240 a pop, my grand total would be 10,164, or about 40% of the way around the earth. xlolx

It's pretty nice.

Looking over last years start times there was actually 6 noon central starts - 4 belong to games at Illinois State (so all of their home games) and 2 were at Indiana State (which is 1 their time) and one of them was against the other Eastern Time Zone team.

So the true break down is
4 noon kicks - all one team
10 1PM kicks
11 2PM kicks
3 2:30 Kicks
5 3PM kicks
3 4PM kicks
8 6PM kicks
1 kick was jacked up due to a snow storm causing delays in travel.

Outside of games featuring schools on the opposite ends of the footprint every game is a pretty easy 24 hour turn around with leaving Sat AM and getting home Sun at a decent time.

If we're going to add mileage from home to the stadium for the home games mine will have to be revised up - add about 1 mile per game round trip, so 6 more miles and 5 minutes each, so maybe an hour travel time total, depending on how the tailgating went and how straight I'm walking.

I have, at least on the Alabama/ Florida end. 20 between Atlanta and Jacksonville is worse IMO. Especially through metro Atlanta. However, at least it's a smaller stretch.

At least a peice of I-10 never came up and cracked my windshield.

St. Louis also had some god awful interstates last time I went through.

Summary of post: Our interstate system needs a little TLC everywhere. :D

Once you get out of Atlanta (around the 6 Flags exit) I-20 isn't that bad. But it does suck right past the state line. Are they ever going to finish that crap? I mean, I-22 opens Monday. If they have finally finished that (I've been hearing about it my entire life) hopefully whatever they are doing at the border can get done.

I actually think that's the worst part is right by Six Flags. They may have fixed it, I know they were doing construction over there, but the eastbound stretch between Six Flags and the 285 connector is the most dog**** peice of interstate I've ever seen. And, for my age, I've seen a LOT of interstate. But yeah, after you get past about Powder Springs heading west it's not bad.

Are they finally connecting I-22 to 65? That's super useful considering they spent a lot of money redoing Coalburg and making it four lane to accomdate all the detour traffic that could have been avoided on that road if they had just finished the stupid connector in the first place. It was only like a mile stretch they needed to finish and it took them what? Seven years, at least?

I'm not even sure the people working on the boarder know what they're doing. It's been like that for years. Driving on the rumble strips is getting old. On the plus side, I have seen people out their with hard hats several times. Whether they were working, who knows. But it will make driving to school a little easier once they finish much like the Anniston Bypass did. I love that strip of road. The view is spectacular. Anyone who comes around for a game needs to drive on it whether it's on their way or not.

Semi OT - my planned 2016 NFL/college game schedule (all mileages one-way distance):

09/11: Browns at Eagles (NFL) - 129 miles (may use Amtrak instead)
09/17: Temple at Penn State - 200 miles (probably will use different routes to avoid US 322/Seven Mountains bottleneck)
09/24: Princeton at Lehigh - 183 miles (will be visiting parents that weekend - 18 miles one-way from their house)
09/24: Villanova at Lafayette - 191 miles (will be visiting parents that weekend - 14 miles one-way from their house, 15 miles from one-way from Goodman Stadium)
10/09: Eagles at Lions (NFL) - 515 miles (I'll fly to this game)
10/15: Lehigh at Georgetown - 9 miles
10/16: Eagles at Redskins (NFL) - 17 miles (will use DC Metrorail + 1 mile walk instead)
10/23: Vikings at Eagles (NFL) - 129 miles (may use Amtrak instead)
10/29: Cincinnati at Temple - 129 miles (probably will use Amtrak instead)
11/13: Falcons at Eagles (NFL) - 129 miles (may use Amtrak instead)
12/18: Eagles at Ravens (NFL) - 32 miles (almost definitely will use MARC Penn Line instead)

Other possible games:
10/29: Brown at Penn - 131 miles (would use Amtrak instead; probably will attend if game time does not overlap with Cincinnati/Temple)
11/06: Eagles at Giants (NFL) - 219 miles (will use Amtrak instead)
11/12: James Madison at Villanova - 133 miles (would use Amtrak instead; will attend if game time does not overlap with Harvard/Penn)
11/12: Harvard at Penn - 131 miles (would use Amtrak instead; will attend if game time does not overlap with James Madison/Villanova)
11/26: various possibilities if they occur (Lehigh, Lafayette, or East Stroudsburg home playoff game or East Carolina/Temple - any game would be drive from parents' house)
12/10: Navy vs Army (in Baltimore) - 32 miles (almost definitely will use MARC Penn Line instead)
01/01: Cowboys at Eagles (NFL) - 129 miles (would use Amtrak instead)

My mileage totals for individual games may not be super-high in most cases, but that doesn't account for the many non-football sports events I attend (check sportspassport.com for information about past non-tennis, FCS, or AHL sports events).

As per usual my intent is to attend every game. I did miss my first game since Hawaii in 2009 last year when a monsoon hit me on the way to Lamar. It was on TV so I wimped out and drove back to Little Rock.

I'm way too lazy to add up the travel but I know it's substantial with several trips to TX and LA. Get a little break with FBS game in Jonesboro.

Longest is Abiline I suppose.

Go Bears!

Not related to FCS but I thought it was interesting. It lists how far each FBS team travels this year. I honestly don't know how Hawaii affords to stay in business.

They don't.

It's why there's growing "concern" in the MWC they are going to drop football....not that the MWC cares as I think most of them would be okay with that.

While a trip to Hawaii every other year may be a bit of an enticement to recruits, I doubt they get that much time to enjoy it. The added expense along with the long flight and the issue of kicking off at 10:30 PM on your body clock makes it way more trouble than it is worth. The MWC is being nice letting them have a home for football and are probably thankful they don't have to deal with that for their Olympic sports. I can't believe that other league took on that burden.

If and when they drop football, I'm sure the other coaches will make the usual comments about how sad they are to see them go but there will be high fives all around behind closed doors.
