One of the greatest to put on skates. Third all time in points and never needed an enforcer.

DETROIT -- Gordie Howe, the rough-and-tumble Canadian farm boy whose boundless blend of talent and toughness made him the NHL's quintessential star during a career that lasted into his 50s, has died. The man forever known as "Mr. Hockey" was 88.
Son Murray Howe confirmed the death Friday, texting to The Associated Press: "Mr Hockey left peacefully, beautifully, and w no regrets."
Howe shattered records, threw elbows and helped the Detroit Red Wings (http://espn.go.com/nhl/team/_/name/det/detroit-red-wings) win four Stanley Cups, becoming an idol to Wayne Gretzky and countless other Canadians while also helping the sport attract American fans.
His final NHL season came at age 52 when Gretzky was a rookie -- a fitting symmetry since Howe was the league's most prolific scorer until the "Great One" broke his career marks for goals and points...

I was lucky enough to see him play for the Houston Aeros against the Minnesota Fighting Saints of the WHA. What a legend. RIP.

I had never heard this before. It's classic.
He leaves behind a massive legacy in the world of hockey, from the statues of him in Detroit to the “Gordie Howe Hat Trick,” which is when a player has a goal, an assist and a fight in a game. (Even though Howe actually didn’t have many of them.)

I got to see him a couple of times at the old Olympia in Detroit as a kid. Saw him later in Greensboro after we had moved and he was playing with his sons Mark and Marty. Somebody on the other team laid a cheap shot on one of the kids. The old man retaliated pretty quickly. xthumbsupx

He had his share of fights. Over 1,600 penalty minutes if I recall correctly. Of course that was over a long time. He played into his 50's.
Edit: I just saw an article in the Detroit News that stated that Howe only had 22 fights. So not that many in reality.

RIP to the greatest
Howe would have kicked Ali's ass if they were both wearing skates and had to drop the gloves, just saying. I am sorry for the drift but the reference to "The Greatest" was low hanging fruit.
