GRAMBLING -- Grambling State has terminated football coach Melvin Spears, as first reported by The News-Star.

In a 3 p.m. phone interview, Spears said he was given no reason -- only that it was "an at-will termination." He had no further comment.

Fourteen minutes after the paper's initial report was posted at www.thenewsstar.com, GSU issued an official statement on Spears' firing.

“It is time to change the direction of Grambling’s football program. I appreciate the hard work Coach Spears put in as head football coach,” GSU President Horace Judson says in the release. “This was a difficult decision, but I believe it is in the best interests of the University and the football program.”

Offensive coordinator Sammy White will serve as interim head football coach while Grambling conducts a search to replace Spears. Judson, in the release, said he hopes to have a new coach in place by mid-January. ...

Spears' tenure at Grambling was one marked by dramatic highs and just as incredible lows.

Hired after the early-2004 resignation of former coach Doug Williams, Spears won a Southwestern Athletic Conference title a year later but could manage just three wins last season.

Reasons to fire Spears:

1) Spears cost Grambling a few too many games this year
2) Grambling couldn't beat Southern
3) Something fishy is going on with that in-house investigation related to drug testing and the handling of it

No disrespect intended to Grambling football. I just wish the SWAC would rejoin the playoff ranks. Of course, I realize that a SWAC team can make the playoffs, just not the champion...which pretty much means it is unlikely a SWAC team makes the playoffs.

I remember when they were a welcome part of the playoffs. The irrelevance and lack of wisdom lies not with the fine people at Grambling, but with the SWAC office.

Anyway, just adding to the conversation.
