View Full Version : Special Thanks to ESPN and James Madison!

In a few days the Youngstown St. fan base will be thanking ESPN and James Madison for helping bring in our new 2007 running back by the name of Andrew Johnson. He is from Pittsburgh, and will be a senior next year after 3 tough years at the U of Miami, FL.
Johnson was leaning toward the Akron Zips prior to Youngstown St. beating James Madison on ESPN2 the Saturday after Easter, as well as being on the ESPN Family of Networks a total of 4 times this year!!
Johnson also says he likes Stambaugh Stadium over the Rubber Bowl and believes a packed house at YSU is better than playing in front of an 10,000 fan Rubber Bowl
THANK YOU JAMES MADISON AND ESPN For bringing this transfer to YSU; as well as 13 other interested transfers!!!!

I think that if he was deciding between Akron and Youngstown, and is from Pittsburgh, regionality played a fairly big part in his decision-making.

If it was between this guy and Kevin Richardson, I'd say give me Richardson any day of the week! YSU can have him and good luck to both of them. I like what we got, don't need to improve the RB position, after Richardson we got Moore, he had the worst average of our 3 runners in the championship game, dag gum, 4.8 yards per carry, what will we do! (Yes I have a bit of sarcasm.)

Montana losing to UMASS not that big a deal, we have done it before up there when they were a 1 seed I believe--They are a GORILLA in a 1 - team conference. No disrespect to other conf. members there--just the truth.
You guys are better than UMASS in my opinion. I can break it down by Units and individuals but I don't need to.

I concur that the Rubber Bowl is a dump, been there several times for college and high school games. It doesn't look bad in that pic but it is run down, still has wooden benches, cracked concrete everywhere, etc. It's almost as bad as Michigan Stadium:D
Corporations buy most of those tickets and you're lucky to see more than 10k at a game.
I know a couple years back in the late 90's early 200's, YSU averaged more than Akron & Kent State combined for a season

Don't be fooled man. The Rubber Bowl is really bad, and their fans know it. I've even heard cases that people have gotten splinters sitting in the seats there..... Scary ain't it!
Stambaugh is so much nicer than the Rubber Bowl, and a billion times nicer than Kent's Dix Stadium.....
I'd put Montana ahead of all the MAC Stadiums, its that nice.
YSU's compares with Miami, OH's Yager Stadium:

Just saw this. The Rubber Bowl is a DUMP !!! 30k seating on cracked ,crumbling concrete with MAYBE 5-6K in attendance(actual). Gone to play-offs games there and the OHSAA has been buried by complaints. Nothing will be done because Akron rents it out so cheap .
Kent St isn't much better, but it is better. The Ice Castle is one the nicest in the nation.

...So let me get this straight....in order to "move" to the Bowl Div. ( IA), a school must have a 30,000 stadium. Yet Akron wants to do away with their 30,000+ stadium and build a smaller stadium. This doesn't seem consistent with the spirit of the stadium size requirement. And it all but kills Akron's chanced of playing any decent out of conference teams at home ever. No BCS or similar team is ever going to play in a 23,000 stadium, no matter how nice it is.

I was glad to see the proposed location between vine, spicer and exchange, bulldoze all those crack houses down.
I wonder if the slum landlords will get top dollar for those properties? Probably now that we have Dem Leadership in the state--Ooops sorry, wrong place for politics.
And how about the people that will be displaced, mostly renters, I bet they will be put up at the Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls if Sherrod Brown (oops there I go again) has anything to say about it.
I heard somewhere that the Attendance requirement will be reduced by the number of students enrolled or something like that?? So 23,000 would be good.

My friend, that rule does not exist, although it likes to spread around the I-AA Nation as it does exist. All that matters is averaging 15,000 a year.. Period... if you do that then you are fine.

The 30k rule is that for the first 3 years the stadium must be at least 30k. Then after that you just must maintain the 15k attendance barrier. (or at least they say so). Look at Idaho St and how they played at Wash St for 3 years when they went 1A then moved back to their little dome.

NCAA RULES ON THIS... AGAIN LET'S PUT THIS TO REST.
Prior to 2004, NCAA legislation required an institution that played their home games in a stadium that contained a minimum of 30,000 permanent seats to average more than 17,000 in paid attendance per home game for one year in the immediate past four year period. An institution that played its games in a stadium that contained less than 30,000 permanent seats was required to average 17,000 in paid attendance for every home game for each of the preceding four years.
Beginning August 1, 2004, institutions were required to show the necessary degree of public support by averaging 15,000 in actual attendance (as opposed to paid attendance) each year. There was philosophical disagreement among Division I-A institutions as to whether or not public support measured by attendance at home football games is an appropriate criteria for determining an institution’s Division I-A status. Another concern was that linking Division I-A membership status to actual attendance was linking an important institutional identity to something outside the control of the institution.
