UND has a legit lefty top of the rotation/ace - against USC he was hitting 92/93 in the 9th inning. But, it is his off speed pitches that has been the difference this year..

First two starts of the year - USC and Alabama

Junior lefty Zach Muckenhirn (http://www.undsports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=58538&SPID=6384&ATCLID=209254479&DB_OEM_ID=13500) continued his fantastic start to the season with a career-high 12 strikeouts, but took the tough-luck loss in a 2-1 defeat at Alabama Friday. Muckenhirn did not allow an earned run and has now thrown 17 innings with just six hits allowed, 21 strikeouts and two walks on the season.

Didn't see anything on the board about the F'n Hawks financial troubles. So they are going to offer FCOA yet they are cutting sports. Only in ElforkoGrande does that make sense. http://www.inforum.com/sports/4007848-facing-budget-cuts-und-athletics-eliminate-baseball-mens-golf

I agree, make your own thread about UND losing sports. xthumbsupx

Losing baseball... that is down right unAmerican. Disgusting.

I can see dropping baseball as it is not a league sport. But I'd have axed swimming, also a non-BSC sport, before I did baseball.

Seems popular for schools to cut baseball, and move toward club leagues. It just isn't as big of a revenue maker as say basketball or football.

There are a few schools that make money on baseball, but not many. What hurts baseball at the college level is that it is an outdoor sport whose season begins in late winter and whose regular season ends around late May. Teams from the north will generally spend the first month of their season making long-distance trips down south.

Looking at North Dakota's schedule, they played the first 6 weeks on the road. Season started in February, first home game was April. It is fairly easy to see why baseball is gone.

It's just their way of paying for FCOA all the while blaming the funding issues on the state for the loss of those sports when in reality it's the FCOA elephant in the room. There is still much more to the story up there in that Faison said they would see a revenue increase of 1.5 million but didn't way where that was coming from. The other question is how much did they piss away on the long drawn out battle over the nickname. That alone could have paid for those sports or the FCOA for god only knows how many years. They will never let it out though what that cost the taxpayers.

There also doesn't seem to be as much TV revenue as well. It may be because of where I am geographically, but all I ever see uo here is the SEC baseball on the SEC network.

But I see other sports like basketball, and football nationally much much more.

Am I the only one who finds this comical? Why would the SEC Network show other conferences baseball games? Am I missing something here?

Ha-ha no. I was just making the point that that's the only network I see who shows college baseball. Like I don't see it on csn, or NBC, or other regional/ national networks. As opposed to football/ basketball which is more likely to be picked up

I watched the Gopher women drop a softball doubleheader to Whiskey on the Big Ten network yesterday. Girl that I taught starts in left field for Minnesota. I've watched them and baseball on the Big Ten network, but I've also watched baseball and softball on ESPN. They had Vanderbilt at LSU in baseball, Baylor at Oklahoma in softball.

My original statement was "it may be because where I am geographically" you being from Minnesota would make sense you'd have ample access to the B10 network.

Another reason baseball (and wrestling) are easy to do away with is Title IX. They would save way more money dropping women's hockey up there, but would likely cause and uproar from feminists, especially since they will be offering FCOA.

You know, I used to think bisonville guys were fairly delusional/intolerable sometimes, till I read siouxsports the other day to read about the cuts. The fact that there are guys who honestly believe the dropping of these sports is to clear the way for a FBS move after the NCAA specially changes the rules to allow the big sky to move up together, is just insanity. Add to it they talked about the halt to making new bowls is to be partnered with this, I had to check out. I feel for you bison guys now. I mean varmint fans are super bitchy and annoying, but holy hell. UND is another level.

C'mon. It's one guy spewing all that and a couple other midgets ask him questions. There was plenty of substance in the Budget Cut and Press Conference threads that explain exactly what happened. But you chose that from some looney who 99% of the people do not believe.

It's not an elephant in the room. Faison stated when they announced FCOA that they would look at all options for paying for it, including "restructuring the athletic department". He was on the Mike McFeely show this morning and said that eliminating/reducing FCOA wasn't an option, because we need FCOA to be competitive in other sports. It also doesn't help that the athletic department needs to cut costs by $1,000,000 due to the current state funding/President Kelley issues.

I think part of the reason that NDSU has been successful across many sports is because they don't offer that many (either 14 or 16?). Frankly, I think more sports should be cut at UND (swimming and diving) so that resources can be consolidated.

How is NDSU going to make it's cuts by the way? I see their attempt to raise student fees failed...

You mean SiouxVolley? Can't think of one other poster who thinks that, and 95% of the posters on SiouxSports make fun of him and his theory's, just like Bison fans think Lakes is ridiculous.

I think there's definitely something to that. SDSU offers a lot of sports, and IMHO some should be dropped for the greater good of the athletic department. Hell, with the money saved we might have been able to keep Nagy. And, outside of the new stadium, he football team is one of the lowest funded on the conference if I remember correctly. Wonder what they could do if they were at a UNI or NDSU level for $$$.

To be honest I skimmed one thread and took the nope train out of there. Still, why the hell you guys let the dude keep posting like that? Can't be good for the board, or obviously your fans reputation.

We are assuming that other fans are smart enough to not lump the entire group together with one lunatic. If people start truly buying into his *****, then we got a problem. For now it's 'shake your head' entertainment.

If I remember correctly, didn't you guys recently dump a bunch of money into an equestrian facility? Is there much support for that program at SDSU? Feel like that is your place holder for the money pit that is women's hockey at UND. To comply with title IX, feel like both athletic departments would do well by taking the money for those sports, and paying bigger schools to play home games in women's basketball and volleyball. It is remarkable, actually, the success you guys already have in that department (Arkansas, Notre Dame, DePaul, and UNI home games).

fewer sports and different Title IX compliance approaches make a big difference.
