(Maybe they might have voted different if they knew he had one rush for a first down this season? xlolx ) If there hadn't been two other all-americans on that defense he might have had a few more tackles and gotten some more votes. Brian Milne of the San Luis Obispo Tribune asked Kyle Shotwell about future Buck Award candidates at Cal Poly and this is what he said:

"When Beck left we weren't sure who was going to fill those shoes. When Gocong left, we didn't know who was going to fill those shoes. But people step up and Coach Ellerson knows how to recruit and plug people into the system. ... It's going to be exciting to see who the next player is on the Buchanan list."

Shotwell said he like's rover Mark Restelli's chances.
"He's just got so much athletic ability," Shotwell said of the rover, who could move to mike linebacker. "He's just such a great football player and I can see him doing a great job at that (Mike linebacker) spot."

Good chances that Restelli will move to the middle linebacker position next year. Restelli will be a junior and in his first two seasons has had a total of 140 tackles and last year he led the Great West Conference in passes defended. He has good size (6'2" and about 215), strength, speed, and room to grow.

Ryan Shotwell is a fine prospect who tied his brother for the Great West in sacks with 7 but he will be a sophomore and his time will come later...

I had the opportunity to sit in front of Mr. Shotwell (Kyle's dad) during the Cal Poly/UC Davis game, and if Kyle is anything like his father and the rest of his family, he's a class act!
I talked to Kyle and his dad at length tonight. They are indeed classy folks (as too was Ricky Santos and his mom and dad and the entire Whitlock clan that was there tonight). Found out that Kyle and I have some common ground. He is from the town of Goleta, California, where UC Santa Barbara is located. Kyle used to attend the UCSB basketball games during the period when I was a beat writer, covering the Gauchos. I also found out that Kyle's roommate is the son of someone I went to college with at Fresno State. I also found some connections between some people I went to high school with and knew from my hometown who played at Cal during the time Kyle's dad played in Berkeley. Kyle says that his brother Ryan, a DE for the Mustangs, is the player to keep an eye on for next year's Buchanan Award.

Name recognition probably cost Jordan a bit this year. He really hadn't established himself as a star until his senior year. All of the preseason hype on the Dukes went to safety Tony LeZotte (a two-time All-American) and defensive end Kevin Winston (a preseason All-American). It's hard to win this award when you haven't had your name on the national scene before. Shotwell was pretty well known from his junior season and Gocong finished second to Beck in 2004. But all-in-all, Jordan had a great year. You really couldn't have argued with several guys winning. Shotwell, Jordan, Murrell, Hayward and Siskowic were all great candidates (as were some others, like Zac DeOssie of Brown, my personal pick). It was the hardest time I ever had in filling out a Buchanan ballot.

It is almost impossible for a defensive back to win this. If you are the best the opponents will just not throw in your direction.

I'm not condoning it, just telling you that has a bearing on the award process. When you consider that a lot of voters do not see all of the players (I know I am fortunate in that regard to have watched everyone on the watch lists), name recognition is a factor. I'm not turning it into an excuse.

Tell that to Rasheen Mathis of Bethune-Cookman. He won it just a few years ago as a cornerback.
