Portland State linebacker A.J. Schlatter, a redshirt freshman from Canby, died Sunday, PSU spokesman Mike Lund confirmed.
Schlatter played a key role on a defense that helped the Vikings to a 9-3 season and a berth in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
Lund said no details are available at this time.
Schlatter was the Vikings' fourth-leading tackler with 62 tackles, 6.5 for loss.
He was named Big Sky Conference defensive player of the week (http://www.goviks.com/news/2015/11/23/FB_1123155434.aspx) after Portland State's 34-31 victory at Eastern Washington on Nov. 21.

Sad deal, according to this article, he died from complications from a tonsillectomy.

On a list of things I don't ever want to hear: A young man dying way too early is near the top.

Sorry to hear about the death of this young man. Condolences to his family and the Portland State family.
By coincidence, I attended a funeral for a young man yesterday. His father and I were HS basketball teammates. One of the saddest things I have ever experienced.
Somehow, as much as I believe in God, the premature death of a child seems even beyond His plans.

Until the last century, however, many(most?) families would expect to lose a child.
It's still a horrible thing to happen.

AJ Schlatter started off as a walk-on a couple years ago and ended up starting 10 games for us this year. Also, the last conference game against EWU, he did enough to garner Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors. He was truly a part of the resurgence of PSU football this year. A tough loss.

Truly sad. Schlatter was one of the leaders this year, a perfect example of the blue collar work ethic that showed this season. Here's another story from the Portland Tribune...

Good read on his life, from the Portland Tribune.

He did battle with mono and strep throat during the season and hoped removing his tonsils would make him well.
