New head coach at Southeastern. Not that unexpected a move as Mike Lucas is the new ball coach for the Lions. Lucas has been with SELA for two years and knows the SLC inside and out, namely from a stint as a coordinator for Sam Houston State, where he served 15 years under Ron Randleman...

FOOTBALL: SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA UNIVERSITY APPOINTS LUCAS HEAD FOOTBALL COACH

Michael Lucas, who has served as Southeastern Louisiana University's interim head football coach for much of the past season, has been appointed head coach, university officials announced today.

His appointment is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System.

Lucas joined Southeastern in 2005 as defensive coordinator under then-head coach Dennis Roland.

"We are excited to name Mike Lucas head coach," said President Randy Moffett. "He has served our football program well as an assistant coach and later as interim head coach. He is a leader who knows our program and players well and has earned their respect. In addition, he has proven to be an excellent recruiter.

"Mike brings the needed stability and continuity that a young football program needs, and we see him helping to move our program forward in the Southland Conference" Moffett added. "His many years of experience in the conference, working under some excellent head coaches, has prepared him for this challenge."

Lucas, who is currently heavily involved in recruiting efforts, will be officially presented to fans and the media on Monday.

Comments from SELA's Fan Board (http://forums.delphiforums.com/SLULions/)

"He's a good choice! A good man, enthusiastic, experienced and a hard worker too. I'm anxious to see his recruiting class."

"Hooray! Good luck, Coach! Go Lions!!"

Oddly enough, those are the only two posts on their board. One would think with a new coach, their board would explode...

It did ;) Good choice in hiring Lucas as that helps keep the recruiting in check. Questions that need to answered will be 1.) is the Air Raid gone?, 2.) who will be the offensive coordinator now that Highsmith is gone, 3.) who will handle the defensive coordinator job (defensive assistants Matt Webb or Dan Redding are key candidates) and ... 4.) which current assistants remain on the staff and who does Lucas bring in besides OC.

There's been discussion but I think a lot of our fans felt uneasy discussing it since it was a delicate issue. Plus it was a foregone conclusion in the minds of most that Lucas would get the job.

Best of luck to Lucas in packing Strawberry Stadium. I had a great time in my visit to Hammond this year and ope that Lucas continues to turn that program around...

On one wall of the body-to-body sardine can that was the Southeastern Louisiana Oak Room stood lanky Lions receiver Merrick Lanaux.

Lanaux had his hands stuffed in his pockets and a satisfied look on his face as the television cameras and light bulbs pointed at Mike Lucas, the man at the podium.

Lucas, who has been the Lions defensive coordinator the past two years, was officially introduced Monday as the new head coach. He was officially selected to the position last week.

We're just like anywhere else. If we win, Strawberry Stadium will be packed. And I expect us to win.
